Some great advice and ideas for your dog in this hot weather!
This week is going to be a hot one, so I thought it would be appropriate to share my top tips for keeping your dogs safe and comfortable this summer! ☀️
1️⃣ Cool Mat or Jacket
Cool mats and cooling jackets are perfect for keeping your dogs comfortable during the hot weather. Plus, a cool mat also gives you the opportunity to practice your place command! While there are lots of options on the market, I highly recommend this tried and tested cooling jacket. Or, if you're on a budget, a wet tea towel works well too!
2️⃣ Plan Your Walks
Walking your dog in hot temperatures is an absolute no-go. If possible, take your dog on a short walk very early, or wait until late in the evening when temperatures are lower. Don't forget - your dog isn't going to die if they don't go out for a walk for one day!
3️⃣ Try to Cool your Home
We know it can be a struggle as most homes in the UK are not made for the heat, but try to maintain airflow throughout by opening windows and using fans. Keeping your blinds and curtains closed can also help to keep out direct sunlight and prevent those temperatures from rising.
4️⃣ Look out for Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can be fatal and requires emergency medical treatment, so it's vital to know the signs to look out for. These include:
Drooling or foaming at the mouth
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Heavy panting
Confusion
Shaking
Lethargy
Seizures
If your dog is showing these symptoms, please contact your vet IMMEDIATELY. Try to keep them calm and still and pour cool, NOT ICED, water over their feet, ears and head.
5️⃣ Tire them out using different methods
If the temperature's high and the pavement is hot, then a walk is off the cards, but there are other ways to exercise your dog - both physically and mentally! Some dogs love a paddling pool or playing with the hose, or you might want to practice some basic commands during short training sessions.
Enrichment toys are also fabulous for keeping your dog entertained! For example, I like to fill a Kong with my dog's favourite treats and freeze it. Not only does it keep them busy for ages, but it also helps to keep them cool too!
