Please never put off going on holiday because you're worried about leaving your pets.

Being worried, or anxious, or even a bit scared (sod it, you're allowed to be terrified) about leaving your pets with someone else is DEFINITELY VERY NORMAL. I know this, because I get very, very anxious myself! I don't have human children, so my boys are my absolute world, my constant; they're there when I'm happy, sad, celebrating, need a snuggle, you name it!

But it's also important to take time for you, to take time for your family, and have a soul-charging change of scenery.

A great pet sitter or boarding place will give you lots of updates, send you photos and videos, and keep in touch with you throughout their stay (unless you don't want them to because it's a bit hard to be away from them. We understand that too!). And they really won't mind in the slightest if you message and ask for some photos. So never feel bad about asking questions or asking for updates on how your pets are doing!

Yeah, that's baby Arthur for attention. Sometimes I know what I'm doing with the cuteness photo algorithms.

Bit hot, innit?

Blinds and curtains closed, tiles from the fridge on rotation, lots of water and water-rich fruit and veg, and frankenrolls and ladders from Bayo's Bunting Balls are getting my boys through it! Meanwhile, I'm grumpy about having to shut the sun out, but they're more important 😂

Hope you're all enjoying this glorious Glastonbury weekend!!

It's really, really hard to leave your kiddos with anyone when you go away, and it's even harder when one of them is really quite poorly. The absolutely wonderful Charlotte over at Bristol Rodent Hotel is looking after my boys this week while I'm sunning myself in Turkey, and my gosh, my poorly little Tornado is doing so, so well thanks to her care! All the other lads are definitely having a blast too, with loads of playtime and foraging stuff made by Charlotte. I can honestly, hand on heart recommend this absolutely brilliant rat hotel. Believe me when I say I wasn't sure if Tornado would make the journey on Saturday*, let alone be playing like he is in the video!

*He's been fighting a really nasty infection for a few weeks, he's mostly over that but I reckon he also has a dodgy ticker and he took a slight turn just as we were leaving. The recent heat really hasn't helped with that, but he's got meds which are being administered and I would NEVER compromise when it comes to my boys' health.

My boys blimmin' love Bayos, and the chews which are in the cage and usually get sent home with you (because they're not quite finished yet!) are from the amazing Bayo's Bunting Balls ❤️

Forage pots are SO popular this week!

They are stuffed with lots of paper - all you need to do is all your pets favourite treats. I have SO many paper colours now too! Including natural 🥰

And the best part? They're only £2 🥰 part of the budget range.

I'm going to make a small batch up to add to the website in the next few days. But you can order them whenever 😁

Availability update 🗓️

I just have 24th June - 6th July (inclusive) available and then I'm fully booked until the last week of August!

I'm off to sun, sea, and chill (and hopefully tan) next week, then I'm taking my boys back to NI for a few weeks. I am hugely grateful to all of you for your support and bookings this year, and I'm really sorry if me not being here affects any of your plans 🙏🏻

Photo is some of my lads before I got a carpet cleaner 🤣

My turn to take inspiration from The Rat Nanny with this strawberry house! I'm really hoping this will help my poorly little Tornado to take his meds. This is Timothy doing some QC 😂

Thanks as always to The Rat Warehouse for super quick postage, we really appreciate you!

My boy Beaufort absolutely loves his chew time, especially the relatively new seaweed and sweet potato chews! As you can see from his exceptional grabby paws, he does not like saying goodbye to his chew.

Baby Atlas earlier today. No, I don't know what that arm is about either.

Anyone who knows me will know I'm horrendous with varieties and I'm always asking, "What's that one?" at shows...whilst there's always someone who can answer, maybe I can stop being such a pest now 😂 This is a really handy visual guide for people like me who don't learn from words alone! Thank you, The Rat Wiki 👏🏻

Well it's finally here!

The new and improved varieties section is now live. So as well as a complete list of all the UK varieties and there class standards I have also managed to turn this into a picture guide too which makes it so much better.

Been working on this section of The Rat Wiki for a few months now. I originally thought it would be a lot easier than it was after managing to source a good few pictures from very kind breeders and friends on the National Fancy Rat Society Forum. It was very difficult to find so many others though so after having a lot of work to do on other sections of the site I decided to make the varieties section mainly text only and all but gave up on the pictures.

However I'm glad to say I went back to it and after many more very generous NFRS breeders helped me out and a community drive from some great people over at the Midlands Rat Club community page I now have a NEAR complete library of varieties pictures to show off. I say near as there is still a few left that I need but with nearly 80 different ones in total I feel this is a great time to let others enjoy all the different colours, coats, markings and shaped on offer.

A massive thankyou to everyone kind enough to help me out on this it's been lovely to involve so many different people and so nice to have another example of the community all pulling together to make The Rat Wiki a better and more accurate source of information to current and future rat owners. I will continue whenever possible to get better and clearer pictures if I can.

Check out the new and improved Varieties page now:

https://theratwiki.co.uk/varieties/

And of course as always if you have any pictures of any varieties I have not yet added or you think you have some that can help improve the Varieties section more please feel free to message me on here or click on any of the email links on the website and I will usually get them all same day.

Thank you and I hope you all enjoy 😀

It's very important to have some mid-exercise snacky snacks 😂

My current guests got to try out the new foraging bowl, and it seems to be a hit!

This genuinely made me cry. I'm not in this for the kudos or points, I'm here to help. I'm here to make sure your little ones are treated like one of my own when they're away from home, which is exactly what I would expect of anyone looking after my boys ❤️

A big thank you to Liv at Rattilodgey Pet Sitting and Boarding for looking after our girls whilst we go away. Liv fitted us in at short notice and we are so very grateful for that. It's great to be able to connect with other boarders around the country, and even better when they can board your own rats! Though, being on the other side of boarding is a little bit scary; I'm hoping that this experience will help me be a better boarder for your rats. And I know already, that along with Jess's Ratty Rest I shall be recommending Rattilodgey to others as it's clear Liv really cares for her own rats so I know my girls are in good hands.

Here are my girls in their carrier on their journey down to Somerset. Betty is the blur in the front 😁

There's not much I love more than a little lady who has her routine, and it doesn't matter where that routine happens because she trusts humans so much. Here's boarder Mabel who is here with her sisters for a week; she's an absolute superstar with her mushy food routine in her adorable strawberry house ❤️ Mabel is one of The Rat Nanny's kiddos who are here on their holidays, what an honour for me!
