❌AT CHRISTMAS YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO:

🧑‍🎄 Visit Santa at the garden centre

🎄 Be around your visitors

🎅🏽 Go to other peoples houses

🎄 Go to see the Christmas lights switch on

🍺 Go to the busy pub on Christmas Eve

If they are anxious or get worried about people, dogs or busy places or if they just don’t like doing these things. It’s not a fault if they don’t like doing these things, many dogs don’t enjoy ‘human activities’ like this (some do, I have one that loves all of it and two that would be 🫤 ).

✅ Instead they may prefer to:

🚪 Be in their safe space (see upcoming post on this), a quiet room they like being in with a dog gate on the doorway when you have a house full of people who may scare them

🐕 Have an extra trip to a freedom field on Christmas morning and some extra enrichment at home while you go and visit family for a few hours if they’d find it stressful to come with you

🐶 A meet up with a dog or human friend at a place they like rather than a trip to the heaving pub on Christmas Eve

🦴 A trip to a dog enrichment centre or a 121 in an activity they love (scent work, mantrailing etc) rather than an outing to see the Christmas lights switched on

🍖 Some dog safe Christmas biscuits you’ve made them rather than dressing up in a dog Santa outfit

Loads of these Christmas ‘traditions’ that we enjoy are not enjoyed by our dogs, especially if they are anxious or more sensitive. Even the most robust dog may tolerate these activities rather than love them.

Please be mindful of your dogs wants and needs and don’t put them into situations they find stressful just because we want them to be part of Christmas. It’s your Christmas, not your dogs, they really won’t mind not being included in everything you do ❤️

Structured Group Walks Vs Pack Walks the differences: (Long informative post alert)

A common theme for people when looking for their dog to join group dog walks is not understanding the differences between a Pack walk vs a Structured group walk. So let me break it down and explain what the differences are..

A pack walk is the most commonly offered service offered by every and any dog walker. It is typically a lower value service. And here is why:

- A pack walk is simply taking non aggressive dogs on a walk together. However, this does not mean there is not chaos. A higher risk of things going wrong, and essentially the walker is just along for the ride. The dogs are near on walking them. It requires a generally low level of canine understanding other than basic safety. Other than this, anything goes.

A Structured group walk:

- This is the gold standard, and is what we offer at Simply Spoilt. The focus is calm not chaos, sure playful moments but this is monitored and if the level becomes too high, or uncomfortable for any dog this is modulated. Because we are teaching the dogs to coexist, enjoy company and be socially neutral. Fostering a much more relaxed, social dog who enjoys their friendships and company but knows boundaries and respects them. The ability to read other dogs well and so on.

- Dogs on structured group walks are first given an engagement tune up, and then with a solid understanding of each dog, their personalities, traits and differences are placed into small thought out groups. This results in much higher levels of both dog satisfaction, safety and dog learning and wellbeing.

- This is not the easiest, not for every start up dog walker. But experienced canine professionals. It requires more work with dogs upfront, better canine understanding, moulding of dogs, and ultimately more skill from the walker.

- In short, structured pack walks offer a much higher value service to the client, is more enjoyable and valuable to the dogs, and for me as a walker is a much more enjoyable experience. We are focusing on loose lead walking, calm, confident leadership (which dogs crave and need)

STRUCTURED PACK WALKS ARE A MUCH BETTER CHOICE THAN A FREE FOR ALL PACK WALK!

When looking for a dog walker consider this. There is barely anyone that offers this. Majority are pack walks, we aim to not be the majority but the minority.

Whilst we are currently full. Our application process is by application only, we regrettably do not accept every and any dog. Because once your dog is in, they are in for a reason and you can be assured that every dog has been carefully accepted to be with us. Meaning the standard of our small group walks remains incredibly high!

I hope this helps doggy parents to understand that not everyone offering 'group' or 'pack walks. Is the same service. Because it is very different indeed. Choose wisely, choose carefully, your dog is among the most precious and important being in your life! It matters!

Uncle Pablo with my Mela for the final walk of today! We headed to Thurlbear woods for a nice Autumnal forest adventure, lots of mud, but lots of fun. Crossing streams, exploring the woods with all of the autumn colours, and the open parts of the routes with stunning views.

Pablo is always such a good boy, and so adventure ready! Great recall, not bothered by anything and loves to go on a proper adventure always.. we will go climb a mountain together one day Pabs.

Mela has known Pablo since the beginning and he is always so good with her and happy to see her.

Socialise your small dog to be confident and calm with dogs of all sizes, and vice versa for larger dogs. (She does woof at people though, she is a Dachshund after all! 😅🇩🇪)

It always fills me with such gratitude for all of the amazing dogs we have with us, each so individual and precious in their own way. 💙

Shortly after this the van broke, but fortunately we on the way home. A quick pit stop into Greenway motors and it's booked for Monday (Shout out to Greenway motors for always taking care of us at a drop of a hat!)

Saturday secure field visit cancelled.
Broken down Van being repaired Monday (alternator went this afternoon) all booked on dogs have been moved to next Saturday. Please see my message in the portal.

Loved Sarah Fisher’s talk yesterday at the ABK conference. She shared so many amazing insights with us including- how important the development of a strong vestibular system is for feeling safe and how we take for granted how important opportunities are to climb for children’s development (soft plays and climbing frames etc) yet we overlook in in dogs. How displacement is anything but ‘behaviours out of place’ and is in fact so important for time to process and problem solving and serves such an important purpose.

And she also shared that amazing poster one of the families she worked with made for their lovely, sensitive dog Doug ❤️

Action shot 📸 Hugo & Bilbo see each other multiple times per week and have become best friends, always exploring and monkeying around together on our adventures. As well as the special bonds with me and each dog, it's so heart warming to see the special friendships they have with each other. 💙
