An unusual offer...NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS. FREE LIVERY AND PHYSIO PLACE FOR PROBLEM SOLVING
With summer hopefully on the way I am going to offer something a little different and I'll explain why.
I was standing watching a lesson and chatting to a lovely lady who was telling me about her horse. The horse had been seen scanned from top to tail and they couldn't find any reason for his behaviour or sporadic lameness. He was a write off. Dangerous to ride and, obviously as a gelding, was no use to the breeding world. I wanted to have him. I should have said I'd take him, but I stayed quiet. I have no idea what happened to him.
I am not a vet and I am not a GB rider, but I do enjoy a puzzle. I have no intention of suddenly offering my somewhat biomechanically- challenged body to be hurled into the atmosphere, but I would like to offer a temporary solution. I won't charge livery or for my time, but normal costs will have to be covered by the owner as I haven't yet won the lottery, much to my dismay.
We do not have stables, there is no school, no fancy hot showers or heat lamps, but we do have a peaceful place to rest, reset and restart. I'm not promising miracles or Harry Potter magic, but if you are throwing in the towel or have just had enough it might give you and your horse the break you need. I may not be able to solve the problem, but I'd like to try. If I succeed then I would ask for a donation to the Horse Trust that cares for those horses that have served our country.
A few things....
- This offer is only for horses that have seen a vet and been fully assessed. This is not for diagnosed issues like KS etc. This is for the ones that have been written off as there is no good reason for behaviour and/or unexplained lameness.
- horse must be OK to deal with on the ground as I have kids and many different animals. I don't mind angry, just not the ones who like to try and kill you.
- this is only for drier months
- must be OK with other horses and respect fencing.
- geldings only I'm afraid as the excitement will definitely send my wobbler over the edge - he thinks he's a stallion but has the agility of three-legged blind rhinoceros. Although quiet mares could be considered if not hormonal.
- we will do a complete diet reset and horses need third party insurance.
- I like and need my farrier so no farrier eaters please unless sedation is used.
- We are not suitable for horses with laminitis or have grass related issues as we are field based. I would love a track system but that is currently not an option.
I will, of course, go through everything before anyway. I'll open applications from next month and go from there.
Why am I doing it?
Because I wish I could have had this option years ago and because I believe in paying it forward. I have much to be thankful for in my life and I want to help others.
Why am I not charging?
I don't know if I'll be able to fix or, at least, improve the issue and I can't promise anything.
Why won't I ride them?
Because I don't want to die. But we will work on the ground. There is potential to bring in a professional rider if we get that far and it is safe.
What will it look like?
I don't know as each horse is different.
Who can apply?
Anyone. Anywhere. But read the above. ⬆️
