Chaffinch
(Fringilla coelebs)

Chaffinches are one of the most colourful birds in the British garden. The male’s blue hat, orange-pink breast and white wing flashes can sometimes be startling against the array of browner birds. Females are duller, with grey-brown feathers, but still have the distinctive chaffinch wing bar. The male’s striking plumage, particularly in the winter, make chaffinches a popular subject for wildlife photographers.

Their call is loud and varied but the most commonly recognised one is a blast of ‘pink pink’. This is an inquisitive call and has led to the chaffinch being called the ‘pink twinks’ in some areas of Britain.

A singing male repeats his song 5-6 times per minute to attract a mate; that’s up to 3,000 times a day. Recent studies have shown that chaffinches in difference parts of the UK actually have regional accents, with minute differences in their calls recorded.

DIET

The chaffinch’s tough beak, typical of finches, is good for crunching the seeds from garden feeders, although chaffinches will rarely take food from bird tables. Chaffinches also eat berries and insects depending on the time of year.

RECOMMENDED FOOD

Finches love a mixture of seeds. Harrisons Winter and Spring Energy Booster is highly nutritious, high protein and wonderfully rich which will help all finches through the months of colder weather

As a small independent business we are very grateful for the support we have received from you all this year.

With all small business there are some real challenges throughout the year and I can honestly say that without your support, we wouldn’t make it. Just spending a few pounds with an independent business goes a long way and in return you know you have helped a small business survive another year.

Merry Christmas to you all

Goldfinch
(Carduelis carduelis)

A flock of these vibrant birds is called a ‘charm’, and it’s not hard to see why. Goldfinches are excitable, chattering creatures which often fly together noisily in a swooping, bounding motion. They are, undeniably, a very beautiful bird to look at and one of the most colourful amongst all our garden visitors.

You can often hear their squabbling call before you see them. A goldfinch has a strong beak and a bright red face mask, as well as a pale brown body with vibrant yellow and black wing flashes. It’s because of their beauty and fast-paced song that they were very attractive to Victorians who often kept them as pets in small cages. This fascination ended up leading to a wild goldfinch shortage. Luckily, goldfinches are now back in high numbers, with flocks of dozens at a time often seen at feeding stations.

In days long gone, they were called the thistle finch, relating to their favourite food. Goldfinches’ beaks are specifically designed to work small seeds out of teasels and thistle heads. However, this is reserved for male goldfinches only which have longer, more slender beaks than the female.

DIET

Tree, dandelion and thistle seeds.

RECOMMENDED FOOD

Harrisons Nyger Seed is a fantastic way to bring in goldfinches. This premium nyger seed is highly nutritious and wonderfully rich in oils which are perfect for keeping goldfinch beaks sharp and feathers strong.

Greater spotted woodpecker
(Dendrocopos major)

Greater spotted woodpeckers give us one of the loudest and most recognisable sounds of spring. This iconic bird can commonly be found on the side of a tree drumming the bark with their powerful beak. Their distinctive drumming sound tells us when the male is ready to attract a mate – single males can drum up to 600 times a day.

The greater spotted woodpecker has a creamy-white chest with black-barred wings and a red rump, with males owning a red spot at the back of their neck which tells them apart easily from females. Juveniles have a bright red cap which fades after their first moult.

There are three native species of woodpecker in Britain: the greater spotted, the lesser spotted and the green woodpecker. The greater and lesser spotted are similar in colouring, however, the greater spotted is close in size to a blackbird, while the lesser spotted is close to that of a robin and is much rarer.

DIET

Grubs, insects, seeds and nuts.

RECOMMENDED FOOD

Peanuts are a powerhouse of energy for woodpeckers and, at Ron’s Pets, we ensure our peanuts are the best we can get at the best price available at the time. A traditional bird food, peanuts are very nutrient rich and loved by a wide variety of birds. We always recommend that you use a peanut feeder all year round.

We also sell loose weigh bags of peanuts in store to keep our prices lower than our competitors pre packed bags

Long-tailed Tit
(Aegithalos caudatus)

Noisy, chatty and incredibly cute, the long-tailed tit is perhaps the most unique member of the tit family. These birds are recognised by their striped black and white bodies, a baby pink stomach and bead-like black eyes. Unsurprisingly, they have a very large tail which is much longer than their body and causes their undulating, jumping flight pattern.

Where there’s one long-tailed tit, there’s usually several more close by! Long-tailed t**s stay in their family groups, which can be up to 20 birds, and they often squabble excitedly together in the hedgerows.

Long-tailed t**s build incredible nests which are domelike structures made from moss, cobwebs and lichen. The nest is constructed and balanced in the fork of a tree and then lined with up to 1,500 feathers, providing luxury for 8-12 long-tailed tit eggs.

DIET

Long-tailed t**s eat mainly insects, but will look for seed in autumn and winter.

RECOMMENDED

Harrisons Premier Wild Bird Seed offers a nutritious seed mix for all members of the tit family as well as finches and other small birds. Make sure to provide clean water nearby to your feeders to allow great t**s to clean their beaks after each meal.

Robin
(Erithacus rubecula)

One of the nation’s favourites, the robin has long been seen as a gardener’s best friend. With its stunning red breast and perky-eyed stare, the robin is the perfect companion while you’re digging over your vegetable patch. In fact, British robins rarely fly more than a few miles from where they are born, meaning that a family of robins could make your garden their roost for many years!

Teapots, watering cans, plane engines – robins will build their nests anywhere. This versatile and quirky little bird has even been known to make itself at home in unmade beds. Yet another reason to cherish them.

Their incredible, fluty song can be extremely powerful and is used, along with their vibrant red breast, to settle territorial disputes. The louder and higher a robin sings, the more likely he is to stake his claim in the area. Robins will defend their homes at any costs and 10% of adult mortality is because of clashes over territory.

Robins are known for their love of freshly turned-over worms, meaning that mealworms are ideal for the robins in your back garden.

RECOMMENDED FOOD

We would recommend Harrisons Ultimate Robin Mix which is deeply nutritious and a good year-round food. The blend is packed with sunflower hearts for energy, plus mealworms to create a delicious and wholesome meal that robins relish we also stock dried and live mealworms

Feeding a high quality, high protein, nutritional food to your dog (or cat) may cost you less than you think.

We are all aware that prices in general are constantly going up or your favourite bar of chocolate is getting smaller but staying the same price.
Well I have just been informed by the Canagan team that there will be no price increases from them until at least this time next year when they annually review there pricing. This means that you can still feed your dog on this highly popular brand for as little as 80p per day. (See the chart below)
Canagan has put in some very interesting comparisons for you to see.

If you are currently feeding Canagan or you are thinking of swapping over to Canagan from another brand then please comment below as Ron’s Pets may be able to support you further or help you with the transition. Samples are available on request.

Thank you

Gavin

Siskin
(Carduelis spinus)

Siskins are a small but striking finch and an absolute delight to find on your bird feeder. They can be recognised by their bright yellow rump and sides, an olive green back and a forked tail. Males also have an attractive mossy green cap. It’s because of this lack of a hat that female siskins are commonly mistaken for greenfinches. However, greenfinches are much larger than the siskin, which is very similar in size to a blue tit.

Often found in coniferous woodland, cold snaps and dwindling food supplies mean that siskins can be seen at garden feeders. Listen out for their inquisitive ‘teeloo, teeloo’ call which is similar to that of a canary. It’s because of their preferred tree-dense habitat that siskins can mainly be found in Wales and Scotland, although look out for them wherever you might live.

DIET

Siskins eat a mixture of insects and seed. Finch beaks are specially designed for pincering seeds from tight casings. Because they live primarily in forests, they feed from pine, larch and alder trees.

RECOMMENDED FOOD

Nyger Seed is a fantastic way to entice siskins to your garden. Nyger seed is highly nutritious and wonderfully rich in oils which are perfect for keeping finch beaks strong and glossy.
