**Being Heat Aware**
With the weather warming up it is important to know that Flat-faced dogs such as pugs, Boston terriers, French bulldogs, English bulldogs and shih tzus are more sensitive to heat because they suffer from brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS). These dogs have small nasal openings and long soft palates in the back of their mouths, which limit airflow. This doesn’t rule out other breeds, we also need to be aware of dog breeds that may have a thicker coat or an undercoat - these breeds are just as likely to suffer from heat stroke in the warmer weather.
Being heat aware of your pet is a very important part of being a responsible pet owner.

How are your Hedgehogs?
Just a few facts and reminders about our British wild Hedgehogs …
1) Hedgehogs are Lactose intolerant so putting milk out for them is not a great idea unless it is lactose free
2) It is unusual to see Hedgehogs during the day as they don’t really like the heat so keep an eye out for them just as the sun sets and the day cools down.
3) Hedgehogs may look cute but they give the insect world a hard time eating worms, slugs, earwigs, beetles and other small insects. They are sometimes known to eat baby birds, small snakes and frogs, so they are a fierce predator.
4) Their eyesight is poor but their hearing and sense of smell make up for that
5) They are speedy little things running up to 5mph which is amazing for such a small mammal, they are also great climbers
6) Unfortunately Hedgehog numbers are in decline so please do your bit for conservation and help the Hedgehogs if you can.

FUN FACTS AND ONE TO SPOT FOR THIS COMING MAY…
So this is a May bug …. May bugs are large beetles with fan-like antennae and a reddish-brown carapace. They are diurnal and can fly. They're also called cockchafer or maybeetle.
So when do we see this fascinating insects emerging? Well it’s all in the name. May bugs are seen on warm evenings in May. But you can also see them whirring around in July. Well ... you’ll hear them before you see them. That’s why they’re also called “doodle bugs”.
May bugs aren't considered pests as long as there aren't large numbers of them. Then they would eat too many leaves. In any case, their larvae are regarded as pests because they eat plant roots.
May bugs spend most of their time underground as larvae. These are called grubs. After three to four years, they emerge from the ground and mate as beetles. They die after four to six weeks. This cycle means that a lot of may bugs emerge from the ground every four years. Every 30-45 years, so many may bugs come out from the ground that you could almost call it a plague. Nobody is sure why. During one such plague in 1911, around 22 million may bugs were found in an area measuring around 4,446 acres (1,800 hectares).

Baby birds are exhausting for their parents this time of year as the chicks will be wanting to be fed at least every three to four hours. In between meals whilst the parents are out finding their next meal the babies sit tight and quiet so not to attract predators. Here they will remain until they are old enough to fledge, the parents are still bringing them food and feeding them in the trees and bushes. The adults are relentlessly collecting food for the chicks, before eating and regurgitate the partially digested meal for their young or bringing them insects.
Adult birds must keep their strength up throughout this time by eating some of the food themselves. That’s why it is really important to support your garden birds by putting out feed for them at this time of year. This will help them no end to have a reliable and easy source of good quality seeds, suets and insects which will cut down on the time they have to spend searching for food.

Kestrels will hover keeping perfectly still in the air before diving down to catch its Prey. With extremely sharp eyesight, kestrels can spot a beetle from 50 metres away.
