Are you looking to travel abroad with your pet this summer? If you are, you will be required to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for them.

An AHC needs to be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).

Check with your veterinary practice to see if they have a qualified OV because not every
practice will have one.

Huge Congratulations to our RVN Kelly, who has completed her Certificate in Veterinary Nursing Consulting!

Kelly joined Westmoor in December 2022 and very quickly became one of our key people 'out the front'! She has a wealth of experience, and can now use the postnominals CertNCS(RVN Cons) to reflect the skills and knowledge she brings to the practice.

Well done Kelly, we all think you're fabulous!

Imagine you are deaf. You can’t hear your smoke alarm or alarm clock. You can’t hear your text messages. You miss out on social interactions. That’s what life is like for deaf people, and it can be very isolating. A hearing dog can make a big difference.

You can help our charity of the year – Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – help a deaf person leave loneliness behind, by adding a donation via Pennies when you pay by card. Just a small donation can help deaf people escape isolation and reconnect with life. Thank you.

Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous.
If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.

Our pets are part of the family and we want to share fun experiences with them – including taking them on holiday!
While this often results in great fun and wonderful memories, there are a few things to consider first. A bit of planning beforehand goes a long way towards making it a positive experience for everyone.

Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell. Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

Meet Pinky and The Brain! 🦔🦔

Pinky and Brain were brought to us on Monday by a concerned member of the public who found them under her shed after a dog had chased their Mum away. They were unfortunately only 2 weeks old so would not survive without a Mum.

It was touch and go at first, as flies had already laid eggs on them (which is always a bad sign) and they were very weak and cold.

We immediately started to hand feed them and warmed them up in an incubator; kindly given to us by Great Fields Hedgehog Rescue for this very purpose!

We continued to feed them every 2 hours throughout the day and night to give them the best chance we could. They sadly lost weight after the first night, which was very worrying. The whole team got involved making sure that they got enough nutrients into them.

We have now had them for 2 days and they are thriving! They have an easy life of sleep, eat, repeat and have made us all fall head over heels for them.

We cannot guarantee anything as they are still so young, but it is looking positive for Pinky and the Brain so far! We will continue to care for them until Great Fields Hedgehog Rescue can take them in.

If you want to follow their journey or support the work of Great Fields you can follow them on Facebook, or if you want to support their good work take a look at their Amazon wishlist: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/6LQ71GL4KMTW?ref_=wl_share

😍Our Braveheart for July is Louie! 😍

Louie was approximately 6 months old when his new family brought him to Westmoor Vets. They were very concerned as he was unable to walk properly as something appeared wrong with his right leg.

On examination, his right leg had a severe old fracture/malformation pointing perpendicular to the normal direction of a bird's leg. This had also affected the ability of the knee and foot to function properly.

Louie’s family decided to opt for surgery to try to straighten his leg to give him the best possibility of survival. He was admitted for surgery on the morning of the 15th of March. He was carefully anaesthetized and underwent extensive surgery to straighten his leg and place metal pins to stabilize the leg while it healed.

With a lot of commitment over the next few months, Louie’s family cared for him and
brought him in regularly for his checks. The pins were removed on the 25th of April as the leg had healed well. Unfortunately, two toes had to be amputated as they had been irreparably damaged due to the original injury, and he also bit off part of both his front toes. This has all healed now.

After many visits, on the 11th of July, Louie was declared well and is using his leg like a champion. He now stands up on his footpad and the remaining parts of his two front toes and is a very happy bird being able to use his leg. We have seen Louie develop into a very confident bird over the months that he has been to see us and wish him many years of happiness with his family.

𝗜𝗧'𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘!!

Does your spaniel have Extraordinary Eyebrows? A Marvellous Mohawk? A 'do' to rival a Kardashian's weave?!

On a daily basis, our staff have to suffer Extreme Hair Envy (especially Martin), due to the number of Spaniels with FABULOUS hair that pass through our doors.

We thought it was about time we celebrated our Hirsute Hounds, and will award a bottle of Stink Bomb Deodorising Dog Spray to the dog with the most luscious locks, as decreed by our Patient Care Assistant and Queen of all things Spaniel, Libby.

Post your pictures in the comments below!

❤Our Braveheart for June is Larry!❤

Larry, a Spanish Greyhound (Galgo Español) spent quite a bit of time with the Westmoor staff after he was bitten by a dog on the 10th of May. His treatment was complicated and extended as the wound became infected despite being on antibiotics.

Mouths are full of bacteria and the bite wound had introduced harmful bacteria.

Larry had to undergo three surgical procedures to finally close the wound, the last surgery being a flap (rotating a piece of healthy skin to the area without skin) created to close the wound. He also received a broad spectrum of antibiotics.

Larry was a star patient as despite his regular visits for intensive treatment he was happy to see us, sometimes so happy he would bounce his big body around with joy (this was also likely influenced by the odd treat).

Well done to Larry who is now suture and medication free and happily at home.

Flystrike is a condition that can be dangerous if not treated promptly. This can also be prevented by applying a topical treatment, it is recommended that you do this between May and July when it is more prominent.

Please contact us if you would like to book in for your rabbit to have their flystrike preventative applied by one of our nurses. This is included in the healthy pet club scheme 🐰
