Which of these methods of dog training do you think is best?

1)
Set your dog up to fail and punish unwanted behaviour to teach them what they are not allowed to do.
Be 'the Boss/alpha/pack leader'. Make sure your dog knows who's in charge, expect them to do as you say regardless of the environment or situation and if they don't, punish or shout at them.

2)
Set your dog up for success. Reward behaviours you like. Teach them through reward and trust what you would like them to do.
Be the person they look too for support, let them know they can trust you and you would never put them in a situation that makes them anxious or uncomfortable. Understand your dogs limits in certain environments and situations and act accordingly for your dogs benefit.

Hopefully you will agree that number 2 is the way we should be teaching our dogs, but surprisingly and sadly there are dog trainers out there that still think number 1 is the way to train. They use shock collars, choke chains, slip leads, shouting and abuse.

If you ever make the decision to hire a dog trainer. Alway ask what methods they use. Always ask what they will do to your dog if they get it wrong or don't obey.

WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

I've noticed people use this sequence a lot.
Recall the dog, the dog returns, ask dog to sit, then reward (give a treat).
What is being rewarded? It's definitely not the recall. You have given the dog nothing for the recall. You have rewarded the SIT. Why ask the dog to sit? What purpose does this have?
If you are wanting to improve your dogs recall you MUST REWARD THE RECALL, everytime your dog comes back to you. There is absolutely no need for the dog to sit. Your aim was to have your dog return to you.
Don't overcomplicated things by then asking for another behaviour.

If you would like to improve your dogs recall. Please get in touch.

If anyone has a home for this young girl please get in touch. Please read description as needs a home without other dogs and no children. Located locally. I'm happy to offer help settling her in and to give advice on training etc. Someone who has time for her and willing to put the work in to help her through her anxieties. Unfortunately I can't take her due to having dogs home board with me.

1st time for Duke today off lead while out. We've been working on him staying within sight and recall. Pleased to say he did great. It helped me see where improvements need to be made but overall very proud of how this boy has come on πŸ˜ŠπŸΎπŸ•

He's back πŸ₯° and what a gorgeous day we've had to be outside. 🧑🐾

I often get asked "How can I stop my dog digging my garden?"
Digging is a natural behaviour for our dogs and we should be letting them have as much time doing what is natural for them as possible. Duke loves digging this spot and I won't stop him from doing it. I will soon be putting in flower beds etc and making areas of the garden nice. Obviously I won't want him digging up those areas.
The answer? Make those areas inaccessible to him. Dogs dig, if you don't want something that acts like a dog, don't get a dog.

Had to mention, I'm so proud of my boy today. He jumped into the car by himself after todays walk. This might not seem much to some of you but since Duke came to me 6 months ago he has been terrified of the car and I've had to lift him in whilst reassuring every time we went out.
There are some things if your dog is anxious about I would say then let them be and don't put them in that situation but him never travelling in the car is unrealistic and therefore something he needed to become comfortable with.
We've taken it slowly and always made sure there is something good like a walk at the end of the journey. I have never taken him to the shop with me or if I'm just nipping out but only used the car for 'fun' trips. Of course he needs to visit the vet sometimes and these trips can't be avoided.
Anyone with dogs that suffer anxieties, it takes time, patience and loads of reassurance but they can get better. We still have a way to go but seeing improvements like this shows me we're on the right path.

From the end of the year the XL bullie is banned in the UK. Anyone that currently owns this breed will have to follow certain rules.
Any existing XL Bullies will have to be muzzled in public and on the lead at all times. This also includes muzzled in the car incase they need to be removed in an emergency. They will also have to be neutered.
If they have shown any aggressive tendencies in the past they will be destroyed.

This makes me so angry. It is not the dogs that choose this path but the selfish owners who either train them to be this way or have no idea how to raise a dog like this.
Any dog in the wrong hands is dangerous. When will they realise that banning certain breeds does not prevent dog attacks? The idiots just get a different breed and repeat the process!! 🀬
