🚩Reminder of my Cancellation and No Show Policy🚩

During the past 2 weeks I have lost £200 in wages due to people not showing for their appointments and cancelling at late notice.

💕🐶🐾I really love my job and don't want to do anything else but unfortunately I can't pay my bills with this love.

🚩I am going to have a to a bit stricter in future as I can't take the hit financially.

If you need to cancel please let me know at your earliest convenience and I can usually rebook your slot if it's a few days in advance, I really appreciate your honesty in these situations.

🚩If you don't show for your appointment you will need to transfer payment in full before I can rebook back in but please be warned that if you miss your appointment I don't have any availability to rebook your appointment until the end of October.

🚩And a little reminder I no longer work weekends and don't have my work phone on so you won't receive a response until Monday 💕🐶🐾

Not long to go now, the last few places, this seminar would be great for my clients as well as dog professionals 🐶

Do you have a dog? Walk your friend's dogs? Are you a dog walker, groomer, sitter, trainer, vet, vet nurse? This seminar is for anyone who spends time with dogs in any capacity.

One week to go! Still a couple of spots left!
17th August 9.30am - approx 2pm Canine Body Language seminar. Only £25 per person. Opportunities to ask questions and discuss. We will be looking at the subtleties of Canine body language, now they communicate with us humans, other dogs, factors that can affect their communicational skills. Using images and videos to help you understand what you're seeing.

Delivered by a qualified, experienced and accredited Canine Behaviourist, and published author on topic of dog behaviour (me 😂).

£25 is an absolute steal for a half day seminar and I am not likely to be running this again for a while, so don't miss out.

This will be held in Holcombe, just outside Dawlish.

🙏🏼A big thank you to everyone for coming in early in the morning this week (some super early) in the aim to get everyone in and out before the heat of the day 🌞

It looks a little cooler next week so normal service will resume.

🐶

Ps not all doggies featured were groomed this week I've just been terrible at posting photos recently🐾

⚠️Please read and share far and wide, this is a fellow dog groomers post regarding a local groomer, not Teignmouth Bishop, Shaldon and Dawlish but I know people in all towns that take their dogs to her.
She has been reported to the RSPCA and the police, she has over 100 good Facebook reviews (whether these are people that have used her services or friends and family is still to be confirmed) but on the outside looking in she looks like a good, kind, gentle, experienced groomer but in reality I have watched shocking and disgusting live videos from grooms which have made me feel sick to my stomach.
Be careful when selecting a dog groomer for your dog.

After discovering some very distressing behaviour from another local groomer (not Dawlish) I just wanted to stress the importance of choosing a trustworthy groomer. Our industry is sadly unregulated. This means anyone can call themselves a groomer. There are a few amazing groomers out their without official qualifications, however there are also some that are doing serious damage working with dogs in the way they are. The only way to ensure that your dog is going to be safe in the groomers care is to ensure they are fully qualified. We spend alot of money, time, and effort into being qualified and would be happy to show you that we understand the level of professionalism you expect from us.

Being able to complete a groom is not always a positive outcome if the groomer is ignoring stress signals and violating your dogs boundaries and trust. Education is what ensures a groomer has the knowledge to correctly handle dogs, and experience is the ability to correctly apply it to each individual situation. It's so disheartening to work so hard to build trust with dogs and their confidence being groomed then watch it them delicate boundaries being completely violated and abused. Dogs don't play up to be naughty, it's often due to them struggling with something.

Compationate approach comes before everything else.

If you are concerned at all about what experience your dog is having at the groomers then you can research what groomers are registered on groomers spotlight. It's a registery of fully qualified groomers that all have to follow a standard of care and safety.

Let's keep our pets safe and happy. 🐾

⚠️It's Officially Grass Seed Season⚠️

I have found lots of grass seeds in paws, ears, mouths and faces this past couple of weeks.

These pesky arrow shaped critters can enter the body through paws, ears, eyes etc and can travel around the body to the lungs and brain, they can cause infection, absesses and lots of complications and mostly always requires surgery.

Check your dog thoroughly for grass seeds after walks in long grass.

They can cause lots of pain and discomfort for your dogs and expensive vet bills for you.

💕🐶🐾 Age is just a number for this handsome chap who I fell head over heals in love with when we first met a couple of weeks ago❤️
Taz is 15 years young, not that I'd know it he was like a little spring lamb in the groom room when he came in for his summer de-shed.
😮 Look at how much dead fur came from him.
He left feeling lighter, fluffier, full of beans and summer body ready 🐾🐶💕

🐾Have you heard of the word Holistic?
This word pops up a lot in the dog industry, especially dog grooming, I feel it often gets misinterpreted.
Do you know what Holistic really means?
Here Sally Lewis explains the definition of a holistic approach beautifully.
I very much follow a tailored unique approach when it comes to grooming each individual client. I have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time assessing each of their needs and am lucky I see all of my clients regularly so know how to make them feel comfortable and not fear the experience. Above everything their welfare is the most important factor in everything I do.
Please do have a read of this link, as dog owners this really is invaluable information.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Exoh9u4sTQsLygFg/

What does 'holistic' support mean?

I describe myself as a holistic behaviourist. A lot of people are confused by this word or don't know what it actually means, but to put it simply - I consider the WHOLE dog and all aspects of their life when assessing, and putting together behaviour support plans.

The definitions of holistic, are:
1. characterized by the belief that the parts of something are interconnected and can be explained only by reference to the whole
2. characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness

To simplify this with dogs & looking at the whole picture, I call it 'the jigsaw puzzle of behaviour'.
All dogs have the jigsaw pieces you see below, but every dog's jigsaw pieces themselves will be different. For example, dogs will have different health profiles, have had different experiences, dietary needs, genetic factors, live in a different environment. My dog is probably a very different dogs to yours when we look at his entire jigsaw.
This is why all factors should be considered, and every dog should receive a tailored, unique approach for them as an individual. Holistic is not a synonym for positive. Although, because it takes the dog's individual needs in to account (if done correctly), it should be wellbeing focused which in itself is a positive thing. I can't speak for all holistic professionals but I do not use punitive techniques, and I would hope that others don't either. If I were to summarise my entire approach it would be welfare-centred (dog centred), holistic, positive (reward based) and fear-free.

If you are a dog professional - have a think about how you can incorporate holistic practice in to what you do. How can we look at their individual jigsaw in your profession, and apply a tailored approach for them?

For more information on 'The Jigsaw Puzzle of Behaviour', I have written an article which you can find here: https://knowyourdogdevon.com/holistic-behaviour-training/

💕🐶🐾Let's Talk Puppies🐾🐶💕
This beautiful girl came in for her very first appointment earlier on this week.
Introducing puppies both to the professional grooming environment and grooming at home is essential in the process of developing a positive relationship between your pet, you and groomer.
A puppies first grooming session should start as early as possible at home with daily brushing in a calm environment, with positive reinforcement, it should never be a negative experience or a punishment (this could make your life very hard in the long run) Try and get them into a daily routine at the same time in the same place each day.
What some people don't know is that regular brushing sessions are a great way for owners and puppies to build a bond with one another.
Some people underestimate how important it is to get a young pup introduced to the professional grooming environment as soon as possible, usually after they've had their 2nd vaccines. Grooming sessions don't come naturally to every dog and I feel it's a big ask for them so I try and work with them at their pace and make it as comfortable as I can for them all.
The introduction sessions are designed so I can assess each pup as an individual and to find ways to work with them on a one to one basis as not every dog is the same and not every breed is the same. A part of this is to ensure all dogs have a long, positive, happy, healthy grooming journey. As some dogs will need to be clipped every 4-6 weeks in their lifetime so it's important to make them comfortable, relaxed and not fear the process.
I introduce them to all the different smells, sights, sensations and noises, I use different techniques to help socialise with the puppies which begins to build that essential bond between myself and the pup and it goes both ways, they have to trust me as much as I have to trust them.
Each pup is different, some may need to take these sessions slower and might need more sessions to build confidence before they have their first full groom sometimes we may achieve a lot in one session. I monitor each puppy at all times to make sure they aren't showing any signs of stress or fear meaning sometimes we can accomplish a trim, bath and dry others times some pups leave a little soggy it all depends on how they are feeling on the day.
Needless to say this little love passed her first session with flying colours and will be back soon for her full groom.

I am so grateful that you have thought about little old me at this busy time of year, it really puts a huge smile on my face and fills my heart.🩷🎁
