A massive thank you to the lovely Honey Bun Haven- rescue and sanctuary who helped out yesterday by taking in 2 guinea pigs that were sadly dumped in Telford Town Park.
Thank god for amazing people like this to help these little furries ๐Ÿ’š
And thanks to the town park staff and rangers for making the initial rescue.

Have a read of Honey Bun Havens post and help if you can

We are lucky enough to be hosting another rock work course at Exotic Zoo this week with attendees from other zoos and animal colleges in the U.K.

Love this pic from today where you can see all 3 layers of the rock work coming together amazingly.

Tomorrow is colouring day! Letโ€™s see how amazing it looks then!

Thanks to Aidan from Unreal Productions for running the course! This man really is a magician!

Really Roar-some weekend at Exotic Zoo!

To beat the back at school blues Exotic Zoo will be trying to bring out visitors inner palaeontologist with a prehistoric treat!
Director Scott Adams, who designed and curated the โ€˜Natural History and Dino Museum' at the zoo is planning a very special meet and greet! Joining him in their Wildlife Academy for the weekend is a genuine 125 million year old dinosaur skeleton. Usually pride of place behind glass in the museum, the impressive real dinosaur will be part of a meet and greet, up close, no glass experience! Director Scott said, โ€œwe know how popular dinosaurs are with our visitors and we love that they can see some real dinosaur skeletons in our museum, but behind glass its so hard to see the amazing details and take photos. So to give people chance to get face to face with a real dinosaur, no glass and as well as finding out all about it, maybe getting to have a selfie with a dinosaur will be an amazing and engaging experience visitors wonโ€™t forget!โ€

The show will be at 12.30pm on Saturday 7th and Sunday the 8th September in the zoos wildlife academy. During the talk, there will be a chance to see and hold some other amazing prehistoric fossils!
As well as the dinosaur meet and greet there will also be a dino stage show with Jurassic Jack, a fossil dig outside the museum with a chance to take home some real fossils, as well as real fossil for sale in the gift shop if you want to start to create your own museum at home!

It's today!

Today is a day to reflect upon the importance of zoos both in education and conservation.

Zoos offer a 'Noah's Ark' for animals whose habitats have been wrecked by humans but also an opportunity for both children and adults to see, get closer to and learn about amazing species that they may never be able to see in the wild due to the prohibitive costs and inaccessible nature of getting to them in a way that photos and documentaries are not able to.

So let's all give a big cheer for the importance of not just our small but disproportionately mighty zoo in Telford Town Park but for zoos across the country doing really, really important work!!

Exciting Zoo News ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ“ฐ

We just wanted to let you know about a super exciting new arrival!

After a while in quarantine to monitor their health and settle them in after arriving from another collection, we are excited to introduce the arrival of 4 critically endangered Roti Island snake neck turtles ๐Ÿ’š

The Roti Island snake-neck turtle (Chelodina mccordi) is distinguished by its long, slender neck, which is almost as long as its shell. This unique characteristic, along with its outgoing character makes it a rare and fascinating addition to the zooโ€™s reptile collection.

The species has been severely impacted by habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, leading to its status as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. Conservationists estimate that fewer than 250 individuals remain in the wild, making breeding program efforts like this vital for the speciesโ€™ survival. With so few left in the wild this beautiful turtle is on the verge of extinction.

Zoo visitors will have the opportunity to view these rare reptiles in a newly designed exhibit that mimics their natural environment. We have carefully created a habitat that includes shallow water pools, basking areas, and a variety of aquatic plants, providing an enriching environment for the turtles.

We are thrilled to be part of the conservation efforts for the Roti Island snake-neck turtle, this species is facing a very real threat of extinction, and itโ€™s our responsibility to do everything we can to ensure their survival.

Today is National Tarantula Appreciation Day, in the USA, and although there might be a literal ocean between us, we thought we'd take the opportunity to show our appreciation for our eight-legged friends!

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ

At the zoo we currently have mexican fireleg tarantulas, an endangered species native to southern Mexico.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ

Just like grandma used to tell you, it is true that these fantastic creatures are more scared of you than you are of them, but even so, they are not that likely to bite you, choosing instead to flick the hairs from their abdomen towards your eyes and nose causing sneezing and itchy eyes which gives them the opportunity to escape.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ

Although in the wild you would find them in dry scrubland, here at the zoo you can find them in our rainforest along with all sorts of other amazing animals every single day of the summer holidays!!

Happy Owl awareness day ๐Ÿฆ‰

Have you seeen Barney the Barn Owl in his new enclosure in our brand new โ€˜British Wildlife Consevation Woodland Walkโ€™?
Heโ€™s loving it!
You can learn all about British owls in this new zone, as well as all our other amazing British Wildlfe.

But donโ€™t forget about the other amazing owls you can see around Exotic Zoo, like an old favourite Rubble the Burrowing Owl and a new face, Merlin the Eurasian Eagle Owl!

Did you knowโ€ฆ the eyes of an owl are not true โ€œeyeballs.โ€ Their tube-shaped eyes are completely immobile, providing binocular vision which fully focuses on their prey and boosts depth perception. This is why, as owls canโ€™t move their eyes instead they can rotate their necks 270 degrees. A blood-pooling system collects blood to power their brains and eyes when neck movement cuts off circulation ๐Ÿฆ‰

Hope you have all had a hoot of a day ๐Ÿ’š

We have a very special birthday to celebrate today! ๐Ÿฆœ

Join us in wishing our Red and Green Winged Macaw, Chico a happy 30th birthday. ๐ŸŽ‚

Kirsten had made him a special cake to enjoy and obviously he had to share it with his zoo family. ๐Ÿ’š

So here are some of his friends sharing the spoils ๐Ÿ“ธ Don the otter, might of had too much cake ๐Ÿฐ

Why not come down and wish him a happy birthday too, the weather is just a bonus for him โ˜€๏ธ

Some of our keepers also tried the cakeโ€ฆ. Kirsten didnโ€™t tell them there was egg shell in there though ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿฅš

If you come down to the zoo todayโ€ฆ you might bee in for a surprise ๐Ÿ

We have had a visit by a colony of honey bees looking for a new home ๐Ÿ

They have made a great resting site up by reception while they send out scouts to look for there forever home.

We have taped off a safe space for them and added some great information boards so you can all learn more about them.

We are all mesmerised by them! We love bees and this is nature at its finest.

Did you know honey bees are the only insect that produces food eaten by humans! ๐Ÿฏ

World Meerkat Day ๐ŸŒ

Join us to raise a glassโ€ฆ of meal worms on this special day!

We love meerkats at Exotic Zoo and we know lots of our visitors do too!

This South African desert dweller is full of character, from their amazing and engaging social group antics, their scorpion eating skills, built in sunglasses and even their bravery to take on venomous snakes like cobras and their immunity to their venom!

There is so much more to learn about them so why not pop in to see them this summer and even get a chance to feed them!
