Wildlife conservation is something in which zoos have a very important part to play and Exotic Zoo is no exception!

A popular mantra in conservation is 'Think global, act local' and whilst we couldn't agree more, we are actually acting both locally and globally!

We don't just protect endangered animals by keeping their species alive in captivity, but, through ambitious partnerships we've helped to create wildlife habitat in Madagascar and coming up next year we will be announcing some very exciting news about a project we'll be taking part in which will help to create and protect habitats in Africa!

This evening, to compliment our tree fossil from earlier, weโ€™re spotlighting one of the most fascinating โ€œliving fossilsโ€ on Earth โ€” the Japanese umbrella pine (Sciadopitys verticillata).

โœจ This species is the sole surviving member of an ancient lineage that dates back over 230 million years. Its distinctive whorled โ€œneedles,โ€ which are actually modified stems, appear almost unchanged in the fossil record. Finding Sciadopitys fossils in Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits reminds us just how long this remarkable tree has endured through shifting continents, climate change, and mass extinctions.

๐Ÿชจ So for and letโ€™s celebrate a species that bridges the deep past with the present โ€” a living link to a world dominated by dinosaurs.
