Going on a staycation soon and planning to take your pet with you?
When travelling with your pet, taking the right steps can make you both more comfortable throughout the journey.
๐จ It's the law to have your dog suitably restrained, so they can't distract the driver or injure themselves
๐คข If your dog suffers from motion sickness please chat to us - we have lots of tips and tricks and can help with medication if necessary
๐ Check your carriers are secure, and get your cat used to them before travelling to reduce stress levels
๐ Make sure you schedule regular breaks throughout the journey and offer water regularly
REMINDER - ALL cats over 20 weeks old must now be microchipped!
If you've not booked your cat in yet, you have 21 days' grace (until July 1st) before the risk of being fined comes into play. Please phone us on 01952 309306 to get booked in ASAP ๐
We are extremely lucky to have an exceptionally talented team of veterinary surgeons here at Southwater Vets.
That means your pet can be treated right here if they need surgery, in an environment they're familiar with and with people they know โค๏ธ
Amongst the dentals, spays, lap spays and castrations, May also brought us lots of interesting cases - including rhinoscopy, arthroscopy, multiple cruciate ligament surgeries, urethral prolapse, endoscopy, CT scans, thyroidectomy, nephrectomy (kidney removal), multiple fracture repairs and BOAS surgeries!
Meet Becca! ๐ถ
Becca qualified as an RVN in 2020 and has been working in small animal general practice ever since.
She enjoys the variety that nurse consults bring each day, and is particularly interested in post-operative care of our inpatients.
She is also a pro at hand-rearing puppies and has been known to take strays home with her - you may remember Winston and Wally who she cared for last year!
At home Becca is kept busy with two bonkers spaniels and her young family โค๏ธ
Jet the puppy recently visited us for his first check up ๐โ๐ฆบ
As you can tell, life must be tiring when you're this cute!
Did you know we have an alternative entrance at Southwater Vets?
This entrance avoids walking through the waiting room and takes you to our 'quiet' consulting room. It was designed with anxious or reactive pets in mind, as well as anyone who may need some extra privacy if they're saying goodbye.
If you'd like to use this entrance please let us know when booking your appointment โค๏ธ
There are so many different ways to engage your pets' minds!
๐
Using kongs/lick mats if your pet is food motivated - these can be frozen in summer to use as a cooling treat
๐ Homemade scent based puzzles and games - hiding food in cardboard boxes for your pet to hunt out can be better than shop bought toys
๐โโฌ Encouraging play in cats that mimics predatory behaviour e.g. using feather and fur toys that can be pounced on
๐ฆด At home training sessions can be done with dogs and cats to keep their minds stimulated - it's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks
What else do you do to keep your pet stiumulated?
With a central Telford location we're easily accessible for a lot of neighbourhoods - particularly St George's!
It's a five minute drive to Southwater Vets from St George's or, if you and your pet are able to, it's just under a 30 minute walk ๐
We're closed on Monday for the Bank Holiday โ๏ธ
If you need a vet while the practice is closed please contact our out-of-hours provider Vets Now. We're open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual and we'll be back to normal working hours on Tuesday.
Have a fabulous long weekend!
Yesterday our team member Caroline visited the lovely Puddleducks Under Fives Ltd to share all about vets and what we do to help pets when they're poorly. It was a wonderful way for her to spend the morning!
Thank you Puddleducks for having us โค๏ธ
What does a veterinary nurse actually do?
This infographic from The College of Animal Welfare explains it brilliantly. In short, no veterinary practice would cope without its nurses โค๏ธ
We're sponsoring the dog show at this year's Shropshire County Show and can't wait to see all those gorgeous pups there! ๐ถ
Who's going to be bringing along their pooch to join Frank on Saturday? โค๏ธ
Frank is all ready for our fun Dog Show this weekend!
Sign up on the day for just ยฃ2 with judging beginning at 12noon ๐๐ฉ๐โ๐ฆบ
Last weekend our team ditched the scrubs for race suits for a day out at Rednal Karting Oswestry SY11 4HS ๐๏ธ
Lucille gave Rob and Ryan a run for their money! ๐
Meet Rachel, our Practice Manager!
Rachel has worked in the veterinary industry for the past six years, and her role is to facilitate the team to give them all the tools they need to keep your pets happy and healthy.
When sheโs not in the gym, you will find Rachel giving her pet terrier, Finn, plenty of cuddles!
We're sure you'll see her around when you next come to the practice so please do say hello ๐
We pride ourselves on being an independent veterinary practice ๐ฑ
What does that mean for you?
๐ถ We will ALWAYS put your pets and our teams first over large profit margins.
๐ฅ Our team is our team. You'll see the same faces when you visit us and everyone gets stuck in.
๐ธ We get to set our own prices.
Most importantly, we can listen to your feedback and continue to improve as we grow โค๏ธ
When we began planning to open up a new veterinary practice in Telford, its location was one of our top priorities.
Based on Stafford Park, we are easily accessible from a number of areas!
For example, if you live in Much Wenlock it's just over 15 minutes to get to us! Easy peasy ๐
Meet Lottie! ๐ฐ
Lottie came in for a vet check and vaccinations which are covered on our Southwater Savers health plan. She got a clean bill of health and we think her ears make her look extra cute!
How cute is little Luigi? ๐ฆฎ
He's a labrador x golden retriever pup and came to see us for his vaccinations. As you can imagine, he was a very brave boy!
A fun little fact about Luigi is he will save other dogs' lives in the future! His owners have always taken their dogs to give blood through Pet Blood Bank UK and we think it is an incredible thing to do.
The nearest blood donation site to Southwater Vets is Copthorne Vets in Shrewsbury and canine blood donation sessions take place across the year.
We hope Luigi's gorgeousness has helped raise awareness of a wonderful life-saving service โค๏ธ
What in the (animal) world is that? ๐
Recently we had this pooch in with a bone stuck in his throat!
Luckily our team managed to remove it under sedation with no serious damage. Phew!
This handsome boy is Barney! ๐ถ
He was referred to us from Trefaldwyn Vets for a CT scan and investigation of an a**l gland mass. Luckily his CT scan showed no sign that the tumour had spread, and Barney underwent a successful surgery to remove the lump!
His recovery has been helped by the wonderful care he's received from his dedicated owners. Here he is at his sign off check, always happy to come for a fuss and treats! โค๏ธ
๐จ A reminder for cat owners ๐จ
From June 10th it is COMPULSORY for your cat to be microchipped before they reach 20 weeks old.
If your cat isn't microchipped by that date you have 21 days (by July 1st) to get them chipped. After that you could face a hefty ยฃ500 fine!
No need to panic, though, we're giving you this reminder now so you can get your cat's microchipping booked in with plenty of time. Give us a ring on 01952 309306 and we'll help you get it sorted ๐
We will be closed on Monday for the Bank Holiday, so if you're in need of a vet please contact our out-of-hours provider Vets Now โค๏ธ
We're open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual and will be back to normal hours on Tuesday.
Have a lovely long weekend!
May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month!
Our veterinary nurses show compassion, empathy and dedication towards every pet that walks through our doors day in, day out. How lucky are we?! ๐
Here's our amazing veterinary nursing team, not including the wonderful Michelle who you may often meet at reception too!
Hello May! ๐คฉ
As you can imagine, we see a LOT of cute pets at Southwater Vets, but gorgeous little Mabel might just have won "cutest puppy of the month" in April!
She came in very underweight and covered in fleas, but with some TLC from her new owner she's coming on in leaps and bounds.
Here's lovely Mabel when she came in for her first vaccinations - she also enjoyed lots of cuddles with the team!
Calling all cat owners! ๐ฑ
May is Feline Hypertension Month โค๏ธ
Hypertension simply means high blood pressure, a common and potentially devastating condition affecting 1 in 8 cats aged 9 or above.
It can cause severe damage to key organs such as eyes, kidneys and the heart. The risks are increased if there are underlying illnesses such as chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Unfortunately the condition displays no early warning signs...
โญ๏ธ Throughout May, we're offering a FREE health check and FREE blood pressure monitoring for our feline friends aged 8 years and up.
Please call us on 01952 309306 to book an appointment
It's World Veterinary Day - what better excuse to brag about our incredible team?
World Veterinary Day was created in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association to highlight and promote the lifesaving work performed by veterinarians around the globe.
Rob and Ryan hand-picked many members of Southwater Vets so they had the opportunity to kick-start the business with a strong foundation.
The incredible feedback we've had from you all cements our confidence in our team ๐พ
Did you know we're currently in Veterinary Receptionist Week? ๐ฅ๏ธ
A veterinary receptionist solves problems you don't even know about for the practice, while answering phones, greeting clients, dealing with insurance, booking appointments, processing payments, and much more... all with a smile and a cuddle for your pets!
Our receptionists Michelle and Lucille are our backbone at Southwater Vets. The awesome duo helps our days run as smoothly as possible and we'd be lost without them - we're so lucky to have them as part of our team!

We want to tell you more about why our keyhole surgeries are so beneficial to your pets ๐๏ธ When spaying an animal, a camera and vessel sealing device are inserted through a small, 'keyhole' incision. Compared to the traditional method it's much less invasive, allowing for a faster, more comfortable recovery time. So your pet can get back to being their usual self in no time ๐ถ
Considering changing your veterinary practice? Why not pop in and see us on Stafford Park in Telford? Tour the practice, meet our staff and get a real feel for our passions and values. Call your practice and ask them to send your pet's files to us at [email protected] - it's that easy!

We're well into daffodil season now! As beautiful as they are, are you aware of the risks? This Mother's Day, be careful what flowers you display as daffodils are toxic to both cats and dogs. ๐ For dogs, watch out for symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drooling, trembling, lethargy, and skin irritation. ๐ Cats may show signs such as shivering, decreased blood pressure, seizures, diarrhoea, excessive drooling, vomiting, nausea, tissue irritation, rapid heart rate, stomach pain, laboured breathing, and heart arrhythmia if they've ingested daffodils. While symptoms aren't usually fatal, they can be very uncomfortable and cause suffering. Team Southwater Vets is here to help should you need us ๐พ #daffodiltoxicity
It's lambing season โ ๏ธ๐ We urge all dog owners to leash their pups during walks, especially in areas near fields and countryside where sheep may be grazing. Pregnant ewes and newborn lambs are particularly vulnerable to stress and harm from off-lead dogs. By keeping your dog on a lead, you not only protect local livestock but also ensure the safety of your pet. #lambingseason #dogsafety
How wonderful is this review left on our Google profile? ๐ฅฐ It's amazing to be able to offer top-quality service to our patients and that both pets and their humans are truly seeing the benefits of all we put into Southwater Vets. Thank you so much Hilary! If you've not yet left our practice a review you can do so here ๐ https://bitly.ws/39WfT (We'd really appreciate it!)
