Here’s a story for you…. We keep all our adult Axolotl’s outside in ponds and because the garden has lots of trees and coverage which makes it a haven for birds and protects them from the birds of prey we thought the ponds would be protected from herons. So today whilst in the kitchen I saw a heron perched on our big above ground pond on the top ledge which contains big fish too large for a heron. So we went out to scare him off and found one of our black Axo’s on the lawn. Not sure if it was alive or dead I picked it up and thankfully it was alive and gently moved it back in to the pond. He seems ok and we spent a happy 20 minutes covering the ponds with netting in the rain.

We don’t breed axolotl’s they do this on their own every cold spell in January and February so we always have a lucky dip with babies.

Hi everyone. FYI just discovered a species slightly similar to Axolotl’s that are endemic to the appellation mountain area in America. Go check them out on YouTube. They’re called hellbenders. They grow slightly larger 2 feet and weigh up to a kilo and live for 15-30 years.

Day 42: A bit of a shocker!!
These remaining two axos ate all pies, (or their brothers and sisters overnight) Unfortunately this is what happens occasionally, their size difference is staggering considering they hatched the same time. But as long as two survive out of a spawning the species will continue. If you are interested in owning an axo, we have plenty from the first batch available.

On the 11th June, we had an unexpected delivery of eggs, 25 days later here's the newest baby axolotls, as you can see one of them has been eating quite a bit. It looks like there will be some interesting colours and markings, but we won’t see for certain until they are much bigger.

A big surprise
Whilst feeding and checking the outside pond, I came across these Axolotl eggs! This is not supposed to happen this time of year, axolotls in the wild spawn when the water is really cold - like the cold patch we had at the beginning of the year. I've taken them inside and will let you see the progress.

Opal’s adventure
This is how Opal suddenly disappeared from her take away pot.
Now let me set the scene. We have a dining room which is now a frog and Axolotl room. I have racking on one wall which holds tanks and vivariams and pots of babies ready for their forever homes as they now eat bloodworms.
So, two days ago as I was cleaning all the baby Axolotl containers (the smallest ones are still in communal containers) and had just completed Pearls cleaning and as I reached for Opals container I noticed that she wasn’t in there hence starting the mad hunt for her poor little body. Opal was on the third shelf so I checked everything directly underneath and the floor but couldn’t find anything which really upset me as she has her own character. I carried on changing the water for those who were left when suddenly a movement caught my eye from the shelf below and there was opal - swimming in my dwarf African claw frogs tank. Don’t know how she got in there as there is glass on the top apart from a small gap for feeding and the frogs were not directly underneath opal. The frogs weren’t happy!! I fished her out and noticed she had a small injury on her tail. So now now all the tubs have a screen covering the tops to prevent any more adventures. She’s doing well and you wouldn’t know she had such an exciting time.
Shout out to all the new Axo parents who had deliveries this weekend of their new Axo’s 😀

For all new baby Axo parents in their new homes. Here’s some helpful tips to get you going

We will provide a pack of bloodworm and takeaway tubs to rear them in whilst they are still small. This is easier for them to get their food and easier for you to look after them.

We suggest you buy a couple of 5 litre spring water bottles to use in giving them a water change each day. We suggest that after you have used all the spring water you keep the bottles and refill them with tap water which you will be able to store until you need it

This is also a good idea for when they do move into their tanks for your weekly partial water change

When doing your first water change use the spare take away tub and fill with clean water from your 5l bottle. Net the baby Axo and put it into the clean container and wipe out the dirty container with kitchen roll you must not use any soaps or detergent. Thoroughly clean and dry ready for the next day

Feeding
Each baby Axo needs quarter a bloodworm cube in the morning and quarter a cube in the evening increase this to half in the morning and half in the evening when they get about 2.5 inches in length and when they get to 3 inches you can move them into the tank and change their feeding to one full cube every other day. At this point you can hand feed them
It would be a good idea to get a dedicated turkey baster which I find invaluable to remove any uneaten food or waste

If you have any questions please let us know
