We have been notified that a poisonous plant is being used as decoration in a pot plant that can be purchased in garden centres and possibly florists.

The pot plant is Livistona rotundifolia (footstool palm; also known as Saribus rotundifolius) and pots of these plants are decorated with three fibrous balls. The balls are the skeletonised fruit of Cerbera odollam (su***de tree, pong-pong). Within each fruit is a kernel that is extremely toxic; a single kernel can be fatal if eaten and poses a risk to both pets and people. The toxic compounds in Cerbera odollam are cardiac glycosides, which are also found in foxglove, oleander, lily of the valley and other plants.

If you have these fibrous fruits in your pot plant, remove them and dispose of them safely. It you are worried your pet may have eaten the plant material contact Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000)or your vet immediately.

PRESS RELEASE: What to do if you find dead or sick wild birds in Pembrokeshire
--
Members of the public are being urged not to touch any dead or sick wild birds they may come across in Pembrokeshire.

Dead or sick birds in public places, such as beaches, should be reported by calling 01437 764551 (or out of hours 0345 601 5522) for Pembrokeshire County Council to arrange to collect safely.

Please have information to hand about where and when the bird or birds were discovered.

Using a location finding app like what3words to record the location of the dead or sick bird(s) is also extremely helpful.

The warning comes following an increase of dead birds being reported by members of the public, particularly along the shoreline.

Bird Flu has been confirmed among Northern Gannets on Grassholm Island off the Pembrokeshire coast, and a number of these have washed up on mainland beaches.

A positive result has also been recorded on the Pembrokeshire mainland.

Dogs and other pets should also be kept away from any dead or sick birds.

All bird keepers (whether you have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock) must keep a close watch on them for signs of disease and maintain good biosecurity at all times.

Additional information on biosecurity is available from the Welsh Government here: https://gov.wales/biosecurity-and-preventing-disease-captive-birds

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great regret that Tenby Vets are unable to continue providing “out of hours care”
As from this weekend 11th February, MiNight Vets Carmarthen will take on all small animal emergencies occurring outside normal office hours. Clients will still call our regular telephone number and you will be diverted.
This decision has not been made lightly, however due to the current staffing levels out of hours cover has become unworkable.
The beneficial side to this decision however will be the superior hospitalisation facilities and dedicated night team available in Carmarthen.

COVID POLICY UPDATE

We would like to thank all our clients for their cooperation over the difficult times of the past 18 months.

Despite the planned restriction lifts, the policy for veterinary appointments will remain as we are, with clients only being in reception one at a time.

This is to help keep both staff and clients safe and with the current COVID self isolation rules allowing us to offer the fullest service possible.

As it would not be practical to maintain social distancing within the building, (every client would be classed as a close contact). If one client should test positive our vets/nurses/admin would have to self isolate for 10 days under the current rules which could significantly reduce our staffing levels and services we are able to offer. Or worse, we might even have to close if we have insufficient staff available.

We thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding and we will review the policy and situation at timely intervals.
