*Princes Risborough Surgery update*
As you are probably aware, the Princes Risborough surgery is currently closed whilst urgent and unexpected building work is carried out.
Unfortunately, it is taking longer than anticipated to understand the extent of the work needed and to get contractor quotes.
We would like to reassure you that the practice is not closing permanently and we will give accurate timescales on the temporary closure as soon as we are able.
We can still offer appointments at the Thame hospital and at the Chinnor branch surgery.
Please call us on 01844 212000 if you have any queries or would like to book an appointment.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience and really appreciate your understanding.

There is often some confusion about the best way to help your pet if they have heat stroke.
This article from Veterinary Voices gives some practical advice, but please do call us on 01844 212000 if you become concerned about your pet in the hot weather.

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

**Road Closure**
Wellington Street is currently closed because of the large pot hole which needs to be repaired. You can access the practice from the Waitrose end of the street, but you need to go around the cones.

May has been Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

Veterinary Nurses play a vital role in caring for your pets whilst they are in our care. It can be so worrying when you drop off your beloved pet to spend the day with us, which is why our nurses are so important ... they treat every animal as if it were their own, spending time with them to understand their needs.

And veterinary nurses do more than you might realise....

They monitor anaesthesia, perform diagnostic tests, take x-rays, run consultations, administer medication, to name just a few tasks.

Here are some of our fantastic nurses behind the scenes.... thank you for all you do!

He is an entire, adult, ginger boy with no microchip. He was found by Bledlow Village Hall.
Please do give us a ring on 01844 212000 if he could be your cat.

The team here at Sprinz and Nash Vets have just become an
IVC Evidensia Positive Pawprint Partner!

The Positive Pawprint is a sustainability strategy which aims to protect the health and happiness of people and patients while reducing the group’s environmental impact.

We have been working through the programme which has seen us implement practices such as:
* having Mental Health First Aiders in practice
* having a designated antibiotic steward to monitor responsible usage
* appointing an Infection Control Ambassador
* changing our cleaning methods to greener solutions eliminating ecotoxic products where possible
* recycling in a more sustainable way
* achieving the Silver Cat Friendly ISFM status

We will continue to to look for other sustainability initiatives to help us work in an environmentally responsible way

* Farewell to Mr Nash *

On 17th April Mr Nash will be leaving after many years of looking after the animals and clients of Princes Risborough and Thame.

Sprinz and Nash was originally a mixed practice, although in later years Mr Nash dedicated his veterinary expertise to looking after small animals only.
We wish him all the very best in his new adventures; he will be sorely missed.
