How are you getting on? Is there something you think you need to concentrate on with training your dog?
If you could attend a workshop on that one thing what would it be?

I'm all ears and want to help!

Message from local Rescue..

Just a small point you may not be aware of. As a rescue we deal with microchips on a daily basis. Just because your dog is microchipped does not mean it is registered to a data base. The last 5 Labradors we have taken in have been chipped but not registered. If not registered with someone like Petlog, Anibase etc you will not get your dog back if it gets lost as there are no details of the owner. We have access to where the chip was implanted but thats it, under data protection we cannot obtain keeper details. It is a legal requirement for the chip but ironically not the registration to a database. Some companies charge a monthly fee now to keep your registration. Your vet will check at the yearly visit that the dog has a chip but NOT if it is registered. Please do this as a matter of urgency as kennels are full up with strays/abandoned dog not registered and we know what happens if they cant rehome them!

What fun are you having with your dogs today?

We're out today running in the fields and splashing in puddles but we always find a few seconds to practice a few sits, close and at distance. Sometimes we add the stay. We regularly practice the Sit Stay Break drill to reinforce them paying attention and listening to me no matter where we are or the circumstances

How often should I be training my dog?

In reality your dog is always learning, so if you are with your dog you are training it.

All you need to do is be conscious of what you are teaching them.

Do they demand your attention constantly and beg for food when you are eating or do they know not to go near the dinner table and to lay down calmly on their bed or in the crate?

Having structure for obedience training is great but it's what you implement at home as well determines if they are a pleasure to have around.

Top Tips

Here we are again worrying about our dogs during the fireworks season that in some areas seem to start at Halloween and go on til New Year's Eve.

1. Give your dog double the amount of exercise during the day before it starts to get dark.

2. If your dog is well crate trained pop them in there with a bone or Kong or something time consuming and just as lovely, or if not just use their bed or blanket.

3. Keep your curtains closed

4. Turn your TV or radio up loud.

5. Keep YOUR emotions in check. If you worry about your dog worrying, your dog will pick up on that. They will think that you are worrying about the fireworks and it will make him much worse.

6. Be strong emotionally and calm and do normal things. Do not react to the fireworks at all.

7. DON'T sit and try and comfort your dog. They do not understand comfort and it reinforces their behavior. Tell them what to do, Lay down, in your bed or indoor obedience for you both to think about and reward these good things.

Crate training is the best thing to teach your dog. It is their safe place, the place where they stay out of trouble or harms way and the place they can sleep uninterrupted. When your dog is in there DO NOT let anyone go to it!

This is just the same as having a cot/crib for your child. It is a safe calm place for them to relax after exercise and eating.

NOT TO BE USED AS A "NAUGHTY STEP"

The biggest mistake people make when training this is returning to the dog and letting it out when it's whining. If you do this it reinforces the whining and they will do it more to get attention or to be let out.

Only let the dog out when it is calm and quiet 🤫

Reward yourself and your dog for each little step in the right direction, don't just wait until reaching the top of the ladder. It may help you get to the top of the ladder sooner 💗👏

My dogs love to swim and play in water, the muddier the better sometimes. They're not bothered about the temperature either!

One of the most useful things to teach your dog is to be still.

Not a sit stay or on place.

Just to calmly relax wherever you decide to hang out.

This could be in the house or garden but more importantly in the park 🌳 or at the beach🏖️, at a pub 🍻 or at a friends house 🏡.

If your dog learns being with you is just calmly hanging out and doesn't mean running around in a frenzy they will be so much more pleasurable to take with you anywhere!

What fun will you be having with your dog today? My dogs love to play ball or frisbie when they aren't working.
Does your dog like to chase a ball? Sniff out toys after your hide them around the house or garden? How about a game of tug? Or does your dog prefer to learn new tricks, maybe you teach them to roll over, spin around or beg?

Always be consistent with your dog. If you said No to a behaviour yesterday, you need to say No every time - not just sometimes.

To get consistent behaviour from your dog, you and the rest of your household also need to be consistent with your rules and boundaries.

Waves Canine Hydrotherapy is highly recommended by me. All of my dogs love it here and Claire is extremely knowledgeable.
Hydrotherapy is great exercise for your dogs with absolutely no pressure on the joints. Great for puppies that shouldn't be jumping or exercised too much and older dogs that might be struggling and all the dogs in between 💗

Whatever task you are trying to accomplish with your dog at least if you go out there and try you are doing more than nothing.

Keep showing up for your dog and keep being consistent. Keep up the good work 👊

I'm was going to be walking 30 miles in September for Dementia UK - but I have decided that is too easy so I'm going to up my daily walk by 2 miles a day and aim for 180 miles during the month.

Day 1 and I had the pleasure of these boys for Company. Apart from a bit of Blackberry picking by Snoopy we practiced a few drills of loose lead walking, recall and stop whistle with distractions of other dogs.

If anyone wants to join me with their dog for a walk either for just the walk or to pick my training brain while out walking please get in touch all you need to do is make a donation. If the link doesn't work you could make a booking and hand me the donation and I will fill in the sponsorship form.

Someone else's sad story, but be careful if you have this type of air freshener in your house.

Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser
Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.

Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog.

I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was.

So I took him to emergency vet.

It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out.

The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing.

Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets.

Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home

Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
Birch (Betula)
Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis)
Boldo (Peumus boldus)
Calamus (Acorus calamus)
Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora)
Cassia (Cassia fistula)
Chenopodium (Chenopodium album)
Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale)
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana)
Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens)
Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry)
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
Mustard (Brassica juncea)
Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)
Red or White Thyme
Rue (Ruta graveolens)
Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus)
Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
Savory (Satureja)
Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina)
Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Please share this story as it may save someones precious furry family member!
