Nosework & Behaviour

Nosework has been scientifically validated as an effective therapy for dogs that struggle with social anxiety, reactivity, and other behavioural issues.

Despite some behaviourists' contrary advice, the benefits of this activity are well-documented.

Dogs that experience anxiety or fear can improve their confidence through successful nosework exercises, as the act of finding a scent boosts morale and promotes positive behaviour. This assertion is supported by research from Applied Animal Behaviour Science, stating that dogs involved in nosework display heightened optimism and better emotional health.

Regular engagement in nosework can also rectify various behavioural problems in dogs.

It offers a suitable channel for the dogs' energy and instincts, reducing undesirable behaviours like aggression, excessive barking, or destructive tendencies.
This transformation occurs when dogs' needs are fulfilled through structured and rewarding activities.

Nosework also promotes a cooperative environment where dogs and owners work as a team, improving communication and trust. This deepened relationship can lead to overall better behaviour, as the dog becomes more responsive to the owner's signals and anticipations.

In conclusion, incorporating nosework into a dog's regimen provides a comprehensive strategy to address behavioural issues, enhance mental health, and improve the human-dog relationship.

For dogs grappling with behavioural difficulties, nosework serves as an effective tool to support a more content, balanced lifestyle.

We were in Rollesby this morning holding a workshop for Elljays Dog Training IMDT

Most of these teams are at the beginning of their scentwork journey so re-enforcing the odour they were looking for was the main aim for this morning's lesson.

We did play a couple of games with more restrictions for the more experienced teams. It highlighted for them how much influence they had over their dog during even a straightforward search.

Well done to everyone who came along. I hope you had a peaceful afternoon

Sorry I didn't get photos of everyone

We held a pre entry trial this afternoon at Thetford Rugby Club

The weather had warmed up slightly from the morning.

With the Rugby Club being on the edge of the forest this was definitely a challenge for some.

Congratulations to winners Marie and Maisie with Liz and Ozzy taking home the reserve medal

Well done to all who won badges today

Our foundation trial this morning at Thetford Rugby Club started bright and cold

With lots of teams at their first trial the emphasis was on having fun with our dogs.

Congratulations to our winner this morning Lindsey and Sully with Lilla and Remi taking the reserve medal.

An interior search by Lilla and Remi in which Remi was given the space to problem solve the hide with just the right amount of help when needed earned them a synergy

The selection test was a straight line with the hide in box 6

Judges report in comments

Being amongst the first teams to compete in excellent stage trials someone said we were the guinea pigs of the organisation.

I preferred to see ourselves as privileged, through trialling and training, to be able to help develop the organisation for future teams to come.

The awesome Barney finished his introduction to scentwork course just before the summer and has been coming along to classes regularly.

He's worked so hard learning his part in this game of scentwork to the point I thought we'd try a hide in the floor. This isn't a skill he'd need until much further into the trial stages and his human has no interest in competing but we can develop his skills anyway

Well done Barney!!

Thank you to everyone who voted for Taffy's inclusion in the Welsh Springer Spaniel calendar.

There were around 300 entries and they use around 100 with one main picture on each month.

Taffy is the main picture on the September page. It may be September most of next year in my kitchen 😁😁😁

Thanks again to Jo Crosby for allowing me to submit one of her photos

The afternoon entry trial at Garboldisham Cricket Club was even more eventful than the morning as we watched the exterior search area, come, go and be changed by the minute.

Again, judges reports will follow. There were two highlights of my afternoon, the first when Ehren's committment to odour meant she forgot about her fear of the contrasting light. This was her last hide to win her interior badge.
The second highlight was Basia's sheer delight at finding the last hide inside to win their interior badge

Our winners this afternoon were Diane and Juno with reserve going to Jo and Ehren.

Thanks to Jo for being my TO this afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed running Tic as white dog, thank you

After an interesting start to the morning the enhanced trial at Garboldisham Cricket Club finally started.

Judges report will follow, but the highlight of my morning, after the police interrupting one of the exterior searches to ask some questions, 😳 was watching Dusty have an absolute blast on her way to a confident exterior badge.

For the second time this weekend we had joint winners.

Congratulations to Jo and Flea as well as Sophia and Dusty with Rose and Trev taking the reserve

Thanks to Diane for scribing and being TO for the morning and Juno for being an efficient white dog.

We held an excellent stage trial this afternoon at Garboldisham Cricket Club.

The interior search comprised of the two second pitch changing rooms, the main bar area and the short corridor leading to the umpire's room and toilets.

With the first changing room being blank and a single hide in the second this tested the handlers confidence to call clear and move on in preparation for the next stage up. Although at excellent you are able to return if you wish.

Once the teams moved into the main area there was a hide under a bench on the left hand side of the room and another in a window jam on the right of the room. The corridor to the umpire's room was blank.

Their beautifully confident search earned Stacey and Ghost a synergy as well as an element badge

The exterior search started with what was effectively an entry stage vehicle search of a jumble of cricket sight screens and wicket covers. It continued with a search of the perimeter of the score hut and the front of the pavilion.
I must thank the teams for indulging my sense of mischief with six hides in quick succession with around half correctly calling it clear before the time was up. I awarded a synergy to Jo and Tic for making me smile with their high energy dash from start to finish.

The selection was two rows of 10 boxes with hides in box one and twenty

My thanks, as ever to Liz my TO and scribe as well as Ozzy who was our white dog.

Congratulations to joint winners Stacey and Ghost and Rachel and Bramble and reserve Jo and Tic

We had a fun morning at Garboldisham Cricket Club with some very thought provoking hides, not only for the dogs but for the humans as well.

My favourite was the single drop of gun oil on the cricket pitch. It was fascinating to watch the dogs work the odour in the same way. Along the boundary line, then across at cover, working then into the wind where they found the gun oil at mid off.

Photos of some other hides the dogs worked this morning

Sorry for missing Ozzy and Juno
