HAVE WE FOUND EVERYTHING?

This is a question I've been asked quite a lot in the last few months.
My reply is usually to say that the professional explosives dogs at the houses of parliament miss one in ten so why do we expect our pet dogs, who sniff once or twice a week to find everything there is to find?

Surely better questions to ask are, did we have fun? and am I pleased with how my dog searched?

The answer to the first question should always be yes, having fun with your dog is the most important thing.

The answer to the second question gives you your training plan for the next month or so.

Taffy, Widget and I went to sunny Essex for some sniffing today.

Taffy always enjoys herself. Widget spent all morning complaining she had to wait until the afternoon for her turn. Two searches later she was asking to get back in the van 😂😂

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is one of Britain's vulnerable native breeds with just 167 registered with the kennel club in 2023

Each year the Welsh Springer Spaniel club ask for photos for their calendar with many more than is needed for the 12 pages submitted. The public are then asked to vote for their favourite picture.

It would be great to have a scentwork Welshie included on next year's calendar.

We have one space left on the entry stage interior focus trial on 10th September at 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum

There's also one space available on the exterior focus trial on the same day

There were two hides in this space, the other was considerably easier than this one.
He's never been asked to find anything above nose height and this was the hide he chose indicate on.

He was a little tired at the end of the class 😁😁

Two Odour Recognition Tests were passed today

Lindsey and Sully passed their foundation ORT. They are now ready to start their journey with The National Nosework Association
Kim with Bob passed their pre entry ORT ready for when they get that last badge in foundation.

I'm looking forward to seeing you both progress.

Line Ups, Selection Boxes and the Carry On Command was the focus of today's workshop at Ashwellthorpe.

We had 8 teams all with different things they wanted to resolve. They all went home having made progress and with homework to progress further

Taking advantage of the lovely air conditioned halls we have in Norfolk we did some odour recognition tests last night

Trevor did well passing his entry stage ORT despite still being in holiday mode.

Roger discovered the ORT track does have corners and aced his pre entry this evening.

Manson passed his foundation ORT ready to start his The National Nosework Association journey

Another hot summer day and another excellent trial. This time Taffy and I were competing. A Trial, hosted by K9 Scent & Search UK

I love watching this dog search, although today I was enjoying watching so much I almost forgot at times I should actually be part of the team. It seems though she didn't want me to interfere as she quite confidently found everything there was to find.

We came away today with a full set of element badges, a winners medal and one very tired dog

Although this achievement gives us two badges in each element and means we're eligible to enter Elite stage trials, we'll stay in Excellent stage for the extra experience.

Well done Taffy!!

Holly finished her introduction to scentwork course just before Christmas. Since then she's learnt to search for a second odour, gun oil. This video shows her searching for a tiny amount of gun oil on a completely blank wall. By allowing her to work out for herself where it is we are building the skills she needs to be able to work more complex environments in the future. She's doing her odour recognition test on Sunday so she can enter trials when she's ready. This gorgeous chap is a retired agility dog. He started training with us about a month ago. He already knew clove and had such a penchant for sausage he would chance his arm and freeze with his nose on anything. We've done a bit of work on independent searching and we're working on reducing handler influence in his searches. Last week we introduced gun oil to his odour library and this evening we tested his commitment to this new odour. This perimeter search is his last of the evening. We'd already tested his ability to search from the start with very early hide placement as well as searching into the corner with hides there.
