Egg shell quality......... πŸ₯š
Don’t forget the importance of Vitamin D3! As shell quality declines later in lay, providing extra calcium in the form of limestone or oyster shell is important but this should always be paired with a course of Vitamin D3 in the water to facilitate calcium absorption.

Dan has been at British Free Range Egg Producers Association this week.
Talks covered AI vaccination, water quality, nutrition, white birds and much more.

The AI vaccination task force group gave an update on the current situation. The greatest hurdle to vaccination (along with trade barriers) is not the cost or administration of the vaccine itself, but the surveillance required if vaccination was implemented. This would be incredibly costly and involve a monthly vet visit and swabbing of 60 birds per shed each month plus environmental samples.

Is feeding live insect larvae the future for laying hens??
We were at the Yorkshire Egg Producers Discussion Group meeting this week. An interesting evening with Better Origin discusing the advantages of this system. One particular advantage was the increased enrichment and foraging, leading to reduced injurious pecking and feather loss.

WE HAVE MOVED!
Sandhill vets has moved to Barker Business Park, Melmerby.
This short move down the road has allowed us the extra space we desperately needed for our growing workload and client base.
Our updated facilities are allowing us to expand our technical services.
We are still busy finishing the building and are hoping to be finalised in the coming weeks. All vet work is now taking place from the new premises.

A national housing order will be in place from 7th November.

A national housing order will be in place from 7th November.

Housing measures to protect poultry & captive birds from are being extended and will be in force across England from 00:01 07 Nov 2022.
This means that, from this time, it is a mandatory requirement for all bird keepers across England to keep their birds housed, or where this is not practical, to take steps to separate them from wild birds.
Keeping your birds undercover away from wild birds is vital to minimise the risk of them becoming infected with from wild birds. But housing alone is not the only solution – it remains essential that you follow strict biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of disease spreading to your birds. Read more:

28/08/2022

Bird Flu (AI) is suspected in a flock of Turkeys near Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The birds are being slaughtered on suspicion of AI. Temporary 3km and 10km control zones have been put in place and restrictions apply.

15/08/2022

The Prevention Zone (AIPZ) will be lifted on 16 August 2022. This doesn’t mean the bird flu risk has gone away for keepers of poultry and other captive birds – good biosecurity is still vital in ensuring there are no more cases and keepers are encouraged to continue to implement the biosecurity measures within the current AIPZ. Poultry shows and gatherings remain banned. Read more: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/bird-flu-latest-situation-avian-influenza-prevention-zone-declared-across-great-britain
