A small female rescued from a garden on Lawsons Road in Thornton this morning after being attacked by a dog. She has multiple bite wounds to her back and is in shock. Wounds cleaned, fluids given and antibiotics to clear infection. She is now fast asleep on her heat mat recovering from her ordeal.

Sorry, but I am currently more than full and therefore not able to accept any more admissions for the time being.

This is 'Robin' rescued yesterday from the Stanah area. Another underweight autumn juvenile at just over 200gms. He was icy cold on admission but now nice and warm on his heat mat. Being treated for internal nasties but as yet not eating.

Little 'Ben' an Autumn juvenile was rescued from a garden on Tarn Road yesterday after the finder knew he was too small to survive at this time of the year. Weighing just over 200gms she was right. Now nice and toasty on a heat mat and he is eating well. Will remain here over winter to get his weight up before he can be released.

'Spooky' was picked up yesterday near Stanah Horse Feeds by a couple who realised something was wrong for him to be active during the daytime. Just as well they did as he has a horrendously bad tummy. Treatment commenced and today his condition has improved significantly.

Remember 'Rambo' who came in with a terrible facial wound? Well he's nearly ready to be released now, the wound has healed up well, but he will have a lasting scar. Still a handsome chappie nevertheless.

'Gabi' - a four week old baby was rescued a couple of days ago from the side of a road by a lady out walking her dog. Gabi had all but given up just lying there. She was hypothermic and dehydrated but amazingly no flystrike. It took a while to get her warm and hydrated. Once settled she was tried with hand feeds but wasn't in the least bit interested. She just wanted to feed herself - independent little madam! Currently feeding well and gaining weight daily, but at only 90gms she will be here for quite a while.

'Maggie' was rescued by a concerned couple from South Shore after she was seen in their garden being attacked by magpies. They were on her back pecking away at her. After checking her over there doesn't seem to be any long term damage but she is quite thin and underweight with an underlying parasite problem. Eating well so should make a full recovery and then she can eventually be returned to her garden where she was a regular visitor.

'Rambo' rescued yesterday from a local release garden with a severely infected facial injury which looked particularly bad on admission. Cleaned up, given antibiotics and this morning looks a whole lot better now. Eating well so should make a full recovery, but will probably be left with quite a scar.

Sadly it wasn't to be, lost little 'Mouse' overnight. I knew it would probably be the outcome but thought it was worth a try to save him. Dealing with this cr*p doesn't get any easier even after 30+ years.....

Little 'Mouse' - rescued after being seen out during the daytime in Out Rawcliffe. He hasn't got a lot going for him at the moment. Despite being on a heat mat he is having trouble raising his body temp, he is also riddled with internal and external parasites including mites. Extremely underweight, so thin he has mouse-like features. Is receiving treatment including fluid therapy but really not sure of the outcome for this one. If I can get him over the next 24-48 hours he may survive, but he is really poorly.

Baby 'Liam' rescued during the daytime from a nearby road four weeks ago weighing 150gms. He needed treatment for several internal parasites and now his condition has really improved. He has a really good appetite and now weighs nearly 500gms so will be going for release soon.

'Loopy' was spotted last night coming for food in his release garden. He is easily identifiable as he was marked. Brilliant to see he is doing well since his release ten days ago.

'Loopy' was released last night back into the local garden where he was found. I've marked this one so he will show up on the camera in the garden amongst the other hedgehogs that visit for food there every night. Pleased with the outcome for this one, as on admission his condition was so poor I really did not think he would survive the night. Now he has a second chance, so stay safe now little Loopy.

This cheeky chappie is 'Liam', picked up off a nearby road two weeks ago in the afternoon before he was run over. Quite poorly on admission but is now doing well. Here he is keeping a beady eye on me and plotting his escape whilst cleaning him out.

This is 'Loopy' found out during the daytime in a local garden, not a good sign. He had a really bad tummy with severe diarrhoea and dehydration. For the first 24 hours I didn't think he would make it but after drip fluids, antibiotics and appropriate wormers he is now on the mend. Quite a little character this one.

It's thirsty work being a baby hedgehog!
This is 'Wilbur' rescued this afternoon from a local school playing fields. He is in very poor condition, his body is literally nothing but skin and bone, icy cold and severely dehydrated. Weighs only 300gms, less than half what an adult hedgehog should weigh. He was given sub cut drip fluids and placed on a heat mat to get him warm. Here he is a couple of hours later up on his feet and eating. He is extremely weak but he's trying bless him. I don't know how he is still alive.
Baby 'Guzzle' doing what she does best, tucking into her breakfast.
Remember 'Scarface'? She was admitted with a terrible injury to her face. She was treated with antibiotics which cleared the infection but she was left with a gaping hole which just wouldn't heal. A few days treatment applying Manuka honey sorted it and it healed up well. Brilliant stuff! Here she is going for release back into her garden this evening.
Baby Boris (now renamed Betty) now feeding for herself. Prognosis now much improved.
'Mick' having his nebuliser whilst fast asleep. It's so quiet he doesn't even know. His breathing is much easier today so hopefully making some progress.
This is 'Wilma' who was rescued out of the road at Windy Harbour on July 10th by Janine who bravely stopped all the traffic to pick her up. Wilma was diagnosed with a head injury and has subsequently lost an eye. Over the next 10 days she gradually got more and more agitated to the point where I knew I couldn't keep her caged any more, so she has been transferred into an enclosed garden to see if she copes better there while she recovers. A new nest box has been installed today and she has everything there she needs. She tends to be active during the daytime which may mean she is completely blind. She just needs time to get used to her new surroundings and hopefully will settle and recover from her injury. If it's decided though in the coming weeks that she wouldn't be able to survive on her own back in the wild, then she would have a permanent home in this garden. Will keep an eye on her.
Said goodbye to 'Billy' this evening. He was admitted on 26th June as a 4-5 week old baby weighing just 90gms. Now weighs 460gms and ready for the outside world. Plenty of food and water left out for him and other visiting hedgehogs at the release site, so he will be fine.
Arrived this afternoon from the Bilsborrow area, this is little 'Billy' aged around 4-5 weeks. Was seen to be out in a garden during the daytime. No sign (yet) of any of his siblings. This is one very hungry baby.
'Dippy' is looking so much better this morning. Just finished his breakfast and has eaten well overnight.
Good to see these two enjoying a good scoff.......
Another hungry baby from Gladeway in Thornton......one of six more youngsters admitted today.
A huge thanks to all our wonderful donators who have supported us during our time of illness and resulting relocation, brought about from thirty years of giving our constant dedication. As a result of ongoing ailments (oh the joys of ageing!) we've taken a back seat with the more physical social elements to concentrate on what we do best, treating, caring for and rehabilitating hedgehogs.
The charity has been quietly running in the background these past few years with the fantastic help of close family and friends. We have had a steady stream of prickly patients throughout and we will bring you up to speed on a few of them in the coming months.
Our new website is also about to be launched. Lots of changes have been made, somewhat a steep learning curve to say the least as we created it ourselves - we're still fiddling!
Our new purpose built Hedgehog Rehabilitation Centre will be officially opened after COVID-19 calms down, and things get back to some resemblance of normality. The building was erected and fitted out by generous donators who were consulted each step of the way.
We have been using the facility for a while now, tweaking and adjusting to fit our processes. Our local council sadly restricted our capacity due to our new location, however this has actually been a blessing with our seeing speedier success rates as we spend more one-on-one time with each patient.
We are also delighted to hear that other rescues in the area are going from strength to strength. We've been going long enough to know that we are all here for the same reason, to help a beautiful species in decline, and that's what counts. All we ask is that you, the animal lover, supports us all in whatever way you can.
