Facebook told me this video 4 years ago, not too long after Firework's arrival as an unbacked 7.5yo.
So thought it apt to add a present video too. Definitely got a bit more balance working over the years π₯°π¦
Letting little things slide.....don't!
β΄οΈ Don't let the little things slideβ΄οΈ
A common mistake that can happen is letting little things slide or working around a minor issue, rather than resolving them because it can be easier, quicker, and less frustrating in the short term.
However, the answer always lies in the basics and these are something that we absolutely shouldn't let slide or compromise on. Resolving problems with horses often means getting to the root of the issue, which can sometimes reveal underlying discomfort and/or anxiety, which needs some time and investigation working through, even if that means your current training plan changing or pausing.
An example of this, is my own horse Bam currently. I've been away for 3 weeks and some weeks before that, he had an accident overnight in the field and had time off turned away recovering since then.
Before I went away, he'd suddenly turned worried since this accident and had become reactive with a headcollar, shooting backwards. Unfortunately with me then being away, I couldn't do much work wise on this and he needed to heal up. However, I was very aware that should he need to be caught in an emergency, we needed a temporary emergency plan so he had a soft, field safe headcollar, or if you caught his friends, you could catch him fine.
Now, in an emergency, short term situation this was a way around the problem, however, it was not the long term solution. The issue needs to be resolved.
So now I'm back home, time is spent addressing this. I'm spending as many visits a day (and/or whenever I pass by) going back to pure headcollar training again, for however long needed till he's back to normal. Back to touch targeting and positive reinforcement of putting his nose into the headcollar and being caught. No riding or work, just this consistently, till it's resolved. It's one of the basics and foundations a working relationship is built on, so it's not something I will ignore or work around just to carry on as normal. This anxiety will n

He is good at this now, however, this was probably the move he found the least easy/natural to do, whereas Bam has always found this one incredibly easy. Their opposite conformation and personalities always shows in training, to what they find easier and difficult.

The lovely Normandy Cob Carmen on the balance board yesterday at Truesdale Equestrian Centre
A few months ago a few exercises like this was quite difficult for her - Hannah has done an awesome job working on her core strength over summer to do exercises such as weight crunches on the see saw, the balance board, mountain goat on the pedestal/balance pads and quarter yielding onto the narrow Catwalk Bridge! For a big girl, she is super soft and has amazing body control - not a wobble in sight on the balance board!
Bridge and pool noodles done beautifully confident by Justo and Louise Clayton-Hatch
Not forgotten how to sit down, been a couple of years since we did this last....I'd forgotten about it π
