A busy Twixtmas! As well as providing emergency cover for all our clients and their horses over the holiday period we have been out and about. On boxing day Martin was on duty at the Jockey Club’s Wincanton Racecourse where there were 9000 spectators in attendance. Today we are providing veterinary cover for the Thoroughbreds racing over the fences at Taunton, Somerset’s lovely independent track.

⭐ Meet the team ⭐

✨ This week on meet the team we have Charlie 🤩

ℹ Charlie joined the practice in May 2022. Charlie is passionate about dentistry and is currently working towards her BAEDT qualification 🩺 as well as her nursing qualification.

🐎 Before joining us, Charlie worked on various yards, mostly within the racing industry having worked in both Australia and the UK. Most recently working on a local race yard exercising National Hunt horses. Charlie also has a BSc (Hons) in Bloodstock and Performance Horse Management degree at the Royal Agricultural University 🤩.

🐴 Out of work Charlie enjoys re-training her ex-racehorse Remy who is very much enjoying the retired life hacking and jumping round the New Forest. As well as helping manage forest stock and walking dogs Flo and Watson 🐶🐾🐕.

🩸 Wound Wednesday 🩸What would you do ❓

Firstly... DON'T PANIC 🙃 But do call us straight away ☎ 01202 823512

ℹ With bleeding described as pumping out rather than dripping we need to get a tight bandage on as soon as possible as this could be an arterial bleed. If the blood comes through the layer of bandage apply more layers.
Limiting the horses movement will also help too.

🐴 This horse came to us here at the surgery so we could properly assess the wounds, stop the bleeding and clean them to determine the next steps. He was with us for a little while for bandage changes, debriding of proud flesh and to give him the best chance to heal correctly.

🩺 We are pleased to say he is now home and doing well. It will be a long road to recovery but as you can see from the bottom photo his leg is looking so much better already ❤️‍🩹

This poor boy got stuck in some fencing, resulting in some nasty wounds to both back legs. The wounds are deep and bleeding. One wound in particular seemed to be squirting out blood rather than dripping.....

❓What would you do ❓

ℹ Sarcoids are one of the most commonly seen skin cancers in horses. There are five main categories of sarcoid to describe their characteristics. There is no age or breed predilection but Bovine Papilloma Virus is thought to be the main causal agent. Current thinking is that flies are the main vector to transmit the virus.

ℹ Sarcoid appearance can be very variable. Occult sarcoids are sometimes undetected as they are often small hairless circular lesions. Nodular sarcoids are more obvious with multiple discrete nodules that can be pedunculated (have a neck that attaches the nodule to the skin). Verrucous sarcoids look like grey scabs or warts. Often one sarcoid will spread to other parts of the body and this progression can be alarmingly quick.

👀 Commonly lesions are found on the inner thigh, armpit and sheath. However, can be found anywhere on the body including around the eyes and on the neck.

🩺 Many treatments are available depending on the sarcoid type. Commonly AW5 (Liverpool cream) or surgical options are used to remove the sarcoid tissue. The key to treating any cancer is to act early. If you suspect a lesion it is prudent to investigate and treat it early to minimise the potential for spreading.

ℹ Myth. Sarcoids can not be treated with, Toothpaste, teabags, sudocream, Turmeric paste. Please always contact your vet for the best course of action.

🌟 This weeks Meet the team is Jennie.

ℹ Jennie joined The Barn Equine Surgery in November 2021 as a trainee Veterinary Nurse. As many of you may have seen last week, Jennie has just qualified as an RVN.

🐴 Prior to joining us Jennie managed a commercial carriage driving team, which involved travelling all around the UK.

🩻 Jennie has an interest in equine rehab, but also enjoys assisting in diagnostic imaging, and Gastroscopy.

🥇 In Jennie's free time she enjoys riding her horse Obe and occasionally competing him.
