So Halloween and bonfire night festivities are just round the corner… So I thought a post about how to keep your birdies safe on Firework Night might be helpful!

Firework displays can be magical for us humans, but for our feathered friends, they can be a night of extreme anxiety and distress. 🫣🐥💥🔥

Birds have a heightened sense of hearing, making them far more sensitive to loud noises than we are. As firework season approaches, it’s important to take steps to ensure their comfort and safety during the festivities.

Why It’s Important to Protect Your Birds…. 🐥

1. Stress and Anxiety: Birds are incredibly sensitive to their environment. Sudden loud noises like fireworks can cause them to feel threatened, triggering panic, which can lead to dangerous flight attempts within their cages and shock.

2. Physical Injury: When startled, birds may thrash around their cage in fear, leading to potential injuries to themselves and their cage buddies such as broken feathers, bruising, or more serious harm.

3. Behavioral Changes: Prolonged exposure to loud and frightening noises can result in long-term behavioral issues, such as feather plucking, biting, or chronic anxiety.

How to Keep Your Birds Safe….

1. Provide a Quiet, Darkened Space

• Move your birdcage to the quietest room in your home, preferably one with no windows or thick curtains/ double glazing that can block out some of the noise and lights from the fireworks. The darkness can help them feel more secure.

• Play soft, soothing music or (my personal favorite) white noise in their room to mask the loud bangs and distract them from the sudden bursts of sound.

2. Cover Their Cage

• Placing a breathable, dark cover over their cage can help muffle the noise and reduce the bright flashes from the fireworks.

3. Provide Comfort Items

• ideally if their in the room with you they will feel safer (I ensure pips out for cuddles on firework night snuggled up in a blanket with me) - or failing that; If your bird has a favorite toy, blanket or snuggle hut, make sure these are readily available. Familiar items can provide them with comfort and reassurance during stressful moments.

4. Plan Ahead

• If you know when fireworks are scheduled, try to anticipate the event and prepare in advance. Having your bird settled in a safe space before the loud noises start will prevent last-minute panic.

Firework nights can be stressful for many pets, but with a bit of preparation and care, you can help make the experience less frightening for your birds. By keeping them unaware of the noise outside, you’re protecting both their physical health and their emotional well-being, ensuring they remain happy and stress-free in your home.
