The beautiful Doris came to visit recently ❤️

I met Doris when she came into rescue as a puppy. We spent many days together over 6 months and we got to know her as the most gentle, caring, and goofy girl. We were all devastated when the XL Bully ban came in, and we had a very tight deadline to rehome her, otherwise she legally wouldn’t be allowed to live.

The week before our deadline, a wonderful couple came to meet her and fell in love. As soon as we saw them together we knew she had found her forever home ❤️

It was the most amazing and emotional experience to see her leave the centre and she didn’t look back! Here she is visiting the field and blowing bubbles in the water 😂

We are so thankful to her owners for giving her the best life with her sister Lily ❤️

We’ve been mowing!

Unfortunately our mower broke a while ago, so we were itching for it to come back so we could get to work on tidying up the pathways! We’ve also added a few new shrubs and will hopefully add some more soon 🌱

Thank you to all of our lovely regulars and new customers. As always, we hope you enjoy your time in the field 🥰

It’s that time again! ☀️

Being aware of the impact of hot weather on dogs is so important. Every year I see dogs locked in cars, tied in the sun, or walking during the hottest part of the day.

Dog’s paws have the important function of temperature regulation (alongside the tongue), and knowing how small their cooling systems are when compared with their body size, it’s no wonder that they can easily get heat stroke and other hot weather related injuries. For example, if a dog gets burnt paws, it can’t regulate its temperature in the same way, and this increases the risk of heat stroke.

Heat stroke is when the temperature gets so high their body is no longer able to regulate it and this results in damage to the body. This can lead to brain damage, lung distress, and multi-system organ failure. Tragically some of these may happen even if you get to your vet in time and they bring down the body temperature. The best thing you can do for your pup is be aware of the danger and be proactive in helping them to stay cool.

To prevent heat stroke, limit periods of activity when it’s hot, ensuring they have access to shade, plenty of water (for drinking/lounging in), and acknowledge that some dogs and breeds are more susceptible to heat stroke than others. Brachycephalics (squishy-faced breeds) are more susceptible to heat-related injuries because their airways prevent effective airflow, especially if they are excited or stressed. Also, consider your dog’s coat; dogs with darker thicker coats will heat up faster and take longer to cool down. Knowing that, consider limiting these dogs’ activity periods more than your average dog. Additionally, instead of just a shaded area, consider providing a cooling mat, frozen chews/kongs and paddling pools to cool down in!
