What a glorious day☀️ We're all happy to see a blue sky and sunshine.
At this time of year the quality of our UK grass is poor and horses won't be getting much feed value from it at all. It is important that horses have access to good quality hay and/or haylage. It not only ensures horses are getting what they need nutritionally from forage, but digesting hay/haylage generates body heat!

Anyone who is studying whilst working knows how hard it is to get the hours in. Liz has very nearly come to the end of her course (Equine Nutrition part 1😵‍💫) but with a business to run, everything that comes with family life with a tween/teen, a horse to keep fit and a & dog and puppy with endless energy, there is not a lot of time in the day to be writing assignments. There's nothing like working to pressure and deadlines so evening studying it is, obviously boosted by cups of tea and chocolate biscuits!

This weather is utterly horrible😭 The deer couldn’t give two hoots🦌 They are enjoying the wet Timothy grass🙄 We’re all (im)patiently waiting for spring when we can start getting excited about prepping the fields for haylage season🚜

Ryegrass haylage and the myths surrounding it.

Some of the conversations we have had with people in the last few weeks regarding ryegrass have been really interesting so we thought this would be a good time to unpack some of the facts around ryegrass haylage.

A few people we have spoken to about the 3 types of haylage we do have told us they need to steer clear of ryegrass as they have been told it is 'rocket fuel' and they mustn't feed it to their horses. We aren't too sure where this information is coming from but it is not entirely true so bear with us while we explain.......

Over the years we have got to know and learn what our customers want or need and we have been able to custom produce our haylage as such. Our earlier cut (beginning of June) ryegrass is mainly produced for racing yards, competition horses and hunters. We make sure that we do a later cut (end of June, beginning of July) as the sugars will have depleted substantially which may suit horses that are in medium work and for ones that can be sensitive to higher sugar/higher protein.

We NEVER cut our ryegrass before the first week of June. Once the grass come out in ear, the protein begins to deplete and it is important to us that we keep the protein levels to 9-10%. The same goes for the sugar levels too. The later the grass is cut, the lower the sugar levels.

Our Ryegrass haylage is very palatable, smells amazing, is good value for money and keeps horses looking healthy. It comes as a small 30kg bale or in big packs of 10 bales.

Don't shy away from ryegrass haylage! We might just have what you need😁

A little late but Happy New Year😁
We had a wonderfully, chaotic Christmas followed by some much needed downtime. We have certainly hit the ground running this week!

With the children back to school it feels like routine and normality (whatever that is) has resumed😅 School runs, dog walks and horses are the start of Liz's day before she is at her desk at 8:30am. Beautiful crisp walk this morning❄️ Spot the puppy mesmerised by Merlyn the pony rolling😂

🎄6th - 9th December🎄

We hope everyone stayed safe during Storm Darragh. We will be spending the next couple of days fixing damaged roofs and sweeping up debris, but nothing serious, and we're all okay. The horses pictured here are happy to be out now that it's all calmed down.

What a day of loading and delivering😅 It started with Joe collecting Meadow haylage for West Sussex. John dropped bales off across Dorset, Tom went to Somerset with Ryegrass and Meadow haylage, and we finished the day with Jason Rea arriving this evening to be loaded with Meadow haylage & Timothy haylage destined for Berkshire & Oxfordshire💪
We're delighted to be delivering to so many new customers and welcoming them for collections too😊

Why feed our 30kg (approx) haylage bales?

They are easy to feed, great quality, great value per kg and smell so good!

Not only can we trace each bale back to the field they have come from, but we could tell you the conditions from the day the grass was cut to the day they were baled.

With our Christmas orders coming in and plenty of people enquiring about our haylage, here is a very simple breakdown of the 3 types of haylage we do.
We have analysis for our haylage but we don't display them for a very simple reason. The results will vary as the crops are harvested during changeable conditions ie moisture levels, temperature, humidity etc. However, as we sow our own grass leys we can expect a uniformed crop. This enables us to expect similar results as per available analyses. We can offer specific analysis on request.
