You need to be part of your dogs experience or they will find fun elsewhere
Build your value in that environment by playing and engaging with them
Plus the more you’re watching your dog and aware of them doing things you want more of, like checking in with you, the more you can reward it

Is your dog disinterested in treats when you’re out on a walk?
It could be that they are over their threshold - to put this simply, they’re either too anxious, too overexcited or too overwhelmed to have their thinking brain switched on.
When one of these big emotions take over they can’t hear you or process what you’re asking of them
The environment or something in it is too difficult
So food isn’t a priority at this point, the priority could be to get away from the scary thing or the priority could be to get closer to the fun thing.
Something that may help get your dog back into their thinking brain and their attention back to you is by tapping into their instincts
A treat held in front of their face isn’t going to cut it
It’s all about how we deliver the treat, this can increase the value of the same bit of food
If we animate that treat, throwing it for them to chase or catch, it is more likely to snap them out of the trance they’re in
Because it kicks in their hunting instincts - dogs are hardwired for movement, without even thinking about it they’re head whips round like “what’s that?”
And that’s all we need, a second of disengagement from the thing they’re distracted by.
We can then use this to direct them to other, more productive, things.

Let’s pretend it’s not super windy and bright and let’s talk adolescence!
I get it, if you have an adolescent gundog at the moment you probably thing I’m crazy
They get frustrated
They get bored
They can keep still
They don’t listen
It can be very hard work!
But more often than not it’s just that people don’t understand their adolescent dog and how to meet them halfway.
People don’t know how to work with their dogs newly found instincts, they try to push against them.
This causes tension and confusion between you and your dog.
In part two I’ll share with you the things you really want to focus on instead of training training training
Because if they don’t care that you exist as soon as you’re out the door - they’re definitely not in the right headspace to learn and listen
But thats why I find it so rewarding working with adolescent dogs.
Because it’s actually very simple to meet their needs and improve your connection with them and when you do those two things, that’s the game changer 🙌🏻

Relationship Hack - Part two of six
Touch is such an easy and enjoyable way to improve your relationship with your dog
Those cuddles aren’t going to waste, they’re super important for releasing all the good hormones that make our dogs feel happy loved and safe!
The safer they feel the more they’ll trust you to make decisions and the better your training will be for it
So don’t skip that bed time massage
Just remember some dogs are sensitive in certain areas, if you notice your dog pull away, let them and respect the fact they don’t like touch in that area
The touch has to be rewarding to get all the good benefits
For example, my Nova doesn’t like her head touched, if all I did was pat her head, this would be very damaging for our relationship

How often do you play with your dog?
Probably not enough! It’s so great for building our value to our dogs, showing them that hanging out with us is fun!
Tug is a great one, or for our gundog breeds they LOVE if you chase them when they have something in their mouth!
Both of these get your dog coming back to you for the game because there’s no game without you!
Plus it’s helping them relax and learn 🙌🏻

You may think you have a good relationship with your dog…until you go out and they don’t care who’s holding that lead
If your dog doesn’t gravitate towards you and see value in being near you, everything is so difficult
For example, of course I’m going to want to teach a decent recall but which dog do you think is going to recall quicker and more effectively?
A dog who stays relatively close and circles back to you often
Or a dog who runs as far and as fast as they can when that lead comes off
