Brrr, it’s cold out there! As temperatures drop, it’s essential to make sure our small furry friends—rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small furries—stay safe and comfortable. Cold weather can be tough on these sensitive animals, but with preparation, you can ensure they thrive all season long.

Here are our top tips:
🏠 Warm Housing
Indoor Living:If possible, bring your pets indoors during the colder months. A well-ventilated but warm room is ideal.
Outdoor Huts: If they must stay outside, make sure their hutch is weatherproof, off the ground, and positioned away from wind and rain. Add extra insulation using pet-safe materials.
Cosy Bedding: Line their sleeping area with plenty of hay or straw to help them nestle in. Replace damp bedding regularly to keep it dry and warm.

🌡️ Temperature Check
Use a pet-safe heat pad under their bedding on particularly cold nights—but avoid electric blankets or anything they could chew.

🥦 Boost Their Diet
Extra Energy: Cold weather burns more calories, so give them plenty of hay and fresh veggies to maintain their energy levels.
Hydration: Check their water bottles or bowls frequently to ensure they’re not frozen. Use insulated covers or switch to ceramic bowls, which are less likely to crack in the cold.

🧹 Winter Proofing Habits
Exercise: Even in colder weather, your pets need space to stretch and play. Set up an enclosed play area to keep them active without exposing them to extreme temperatures.
Hygiene: Regularly check their feet and fur for signs of dampness or frostbite. A quick grooming session can also prevent mats in long-haired breeds that trap cold moisture.

❄️ Know the Signs of Cold Stress
If your furry friend seems lethargic, is shivering, or has a reduced appetite, they might be struggling with the cold. Don’t wait call us! We’re here to help keep your pets happy and healthy.

Our team is always here to talk about your small pets’ needs. Drop by, give us a call, or send us a message if you’re unsure how to winter-proof your little ones🐾

Monty's Misadventure! 🐾

Meet Monty, a cheeky Bichon Frise x Cavalier who recently gave his family (and us) quite the surprise! Monty, who's on a diet, couldn't resist a box of 200 children's rubber swimming hat. At first, his owners thought he’d only chewed part of one cap but Monty had other plans.

By Friday, Monty had passed a red cap and even vomited up some blue and white ones. That’s when his family realised he’d eaten way more than they thought. Despite this, Monty seemed bright and happy, so no one suspected just how much trouble was brewing.

An x-ray revealed his stomach was completely packed with the caps! During surgery, we discovered over ten multi-colored hats, with some already making their way into his intestines.

Thanks to a gastrotomy and enterotomy, Monty is now hat-free and on the mend! 🎉🐶

Let this be a reminder to keep curious pups away from tempting (and not-so-edible) goodies💕

Keep Your Pets Safe This New Year’s Eve! 🐾

The countdown to 2025 is on, and while fireworks are dazzling for us, they can be distressing for our pets. 💔 Here's how to help your pet feel safe and secure during the celebrations:

🌟 Plan Ahead:
Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area for your pet to retreat to. Add their favorite blanket or toy for comfort.
Keep Them Indoors: Ensure all doors, windows, and pet flaps are securely closed to prevent escape if they get scared.
🌟 Stay Calm & Comforting:
Your calm energy can help reassure your pet. If they’re anxious, soothing words and gentle pets go a long way.
🌟 Consider Background Noise:
Play calming music or turn on the TV to help drown out the noise of fireworks.
🌟 Need Extra Help?
Some pets may benefit from calming products or prescription support. Give us a call to discuss the best options for your pet in advance.

Let’s ring in the New Year without the stress! 🎉 If you need advice or support, don’t hesitate to reach out💙

Nick, came to us with a rare condition called Horner's Syndrome affecting his right eye👀
In the first photo, you’ll see his right pupil looking different, but in the second photo, there’s a partial improvement after Phenylephrine eye drops were applied. 💧 However, it took over 30 minutes for his pupil to dilate and about 2 hours to fully respond.

After some investigation the culprit turned out to be… a deep cat bite on the right side of his neck! 🐾
With two courses of antibiotics, Nick made a purr-fect recovery!

Welcome Wednesday to Liv! Liv is a student veterinary nurse so get to know her better here⬇

How long have you been working at Priory Lodge?
2 years

Tea or Coffee?
TEA!!!! BUT definitely love a Starbucks coffee

What is your favourite part of your job?
I like seeing some of the oldies that come in, they normally come in once a month for librela and they get lots of treats and cuddles at the same Time, or I love when we get to see some staffies that come in, they sing their hearts out in reception but all they want is some fuss

Welcome Wednesday to Ruth! Check our the following questions to get to know her better!🐾💙

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞?
25years at Priory Lodge and 12 years at Eton's before that!

𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞?
Red Bush Tea

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛?
My favourite part of the job is working out the correct diagnosis and treatment for my patients and the joy of seeing them get better as a result. It's like a detective story and I always loved reading Agatha Christie books! I am fortunate to be part of a good team who work together to get these results as sadly it isn't always straightforward.

Hello to our new followers! Just encase you haven't met the whole team at Priory Lodge, we will be introducing the team every Wednesday💙
So, a welcome Wednesday to Alison! Alison is the head nurse at Priory Lodge. We have asked Alison some questions for you to get to know her better!

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞?
I have worked at PL for 25 years! Started as a trainee and worked up to be head nurse.

𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞?
Definitely tea...I think everyone knows me well enough not to approach me with anything coffee related!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛?
I still enjoy doing nurse clinics, meeting clients and their fur babies. Over the years I have got to know quite a few clients who I have seen through the whole of their pets life from puppy/kitten coming in to their final visit at the end. I love when the animals recognise me and rush over for a cuddle and a stroke!
I also enjoy doing stock ordering, making sure that we have the medication and food in place for you to take away on the day, or to collect next day.

As the festive season approaches, it’s important to remember that our feline friends can feel stressed by fireworks and the hustle and bustle of family gatherings. This time of year can be particularly overwhelming for cats, leading to anxiety and even serious health issues!

🚨 Stress in cats can manifest in various ways, and for some, it can lead to urinary problems, such as obstructions. These obstructions can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Signs of stress include hiding, changes in litter box habits, or excessive grooming.

💊 To support your cat’s well-being during this hectic season, consider a natural supplement designed to promote urinary health in cats. The ingredients can help support the bladder's mucosal lining, helping to prevent irritation and maintain a healthy urinary tract.

🩺 A quick vet visit can ensure your cat stays healthy and stress-free. A supplement can be a helpful addition to their routine, particularly during stressful times.

Let’s keep our feline friends safe and comfortable this season! If you notice any signs of distress, don’t hesitate to reach out🐾

It’s Pet Cancer Awareness Month: Is Your Dog at Risk? Let’s Talk Prevention!

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re here to help you stay proactive about your furry friend’s health. 🐾

Did you know that some dog breeds or cross breeds are more prone to certain health concerns, including cancer? If your pup falls into a higher-risk group, early detection can make all the difference!

Dogs over 4 years old—especially those in risk-prone breeds—can benefit from regular check-ups to catch any potential issues early💙

Here’s how we can help during this important month:
✔️ A thorough exam to check for any lumps, bumps, or abnormalities.
✔️ Discussing your dog’s health history and any changes you’ve noticed.
✔️ Cancer screening options, such as advanced blood tests that can detect some cancers before symptoms appear.

Preventive care isn’t just about catching problems early—it’s about ensuring your dog’s continued health and happiness.

Let’s use Pet Cancer Awareness Month as a reminder🐾

Book an appointment today for a comprehensive exam tailored to your dog’s needs. Together, we can make a difference!

Is Your Golden Oldie Aging Gracefully? 🐾

As our dogs get older, their needs change, but their love and loyalty stay the same! Here are some signs of a healthy senior dog:
✨ Bright Eyes & Alert Ears - Clear eyes and responsive ears are a good sign your pup is feeling well!
Shiny Coat - A glossy coat means they’re getting the nutrients they need.
✨ Consistent Energy - While they may not be as bouncy, they should still enjoy short walks and play.
✨ Comfortable Movement - Moving with ease, even if at a slower pace, shows their joints and muscles are holding up.

As pets age, regular check-ups can catch any issues early, giving you peace of mind and helping keep your senior dog happy and healthy!

If it’s been a while since we last saw your dog, book a senior health exam with us so we can discuss and detect any signs of aging early! 💛🐶

The lovely Belle visited vet Ruth for a check up after her nasty incident with a stake out walking!🐾🐕
Ruth and the team flushed Belle's wound and placed a Penrose drain which helps remove fluid from the wound and can prevent infection!

Belle has had her stitches removed and has been signed off to continue walks but please be careful Belle🫣💙
