Unleash your inner scientist with the Pond Lab Multi Test 😃

The Pond Lab Multi-Test kit comprises up to 200 tests combined of the 6 key parameters to test in your pond: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH and KH. All the tests are liquid drop tests from a dropper bottle to ensure the drops are the same size. Full instructions are included detailing optimum levels and suggestions for correction, along with an integrated test tube rack. All you have to do is add your pond water to the test tube and count the number of drops needed.

Time for a featured fish 😄🙌

Colomesus asellus is more commonly known as the South American Pufferfish or Amazon Pufferfish. Although not a large fish, the fact they like to be kept in groups (unusual for puffers) means that a 100-litre aquarium would be the minimum required, these puffers are very sensitive to poor water quality and, as previously mentioned, prefer highly oxygenated water, for this reason good external filtration would be recommended along with the use of air stones or power heads to increase the dissolved oxygen levels. Decoration of the aquarium should try to replicate the conditions found in the Amazon so sand or fine gravel with plenty of plants both rooted and floating along with bogwood or azalea roots to replicate fallen and overhanging branches.

The correct answer to yesterdays was the Electric Yellow Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus) 😍

The misnomer this fish carries is hidden within its scientific name. These names often describe a physical attribute to the fish (scientific description). The problem with this cichlids name is describes it not as a yellow fish, but as a blue one! Caeruleus comes from the Latin for blue (caeruleum). Why therefore would a yellow fish be described as a blue one? The answer is Lake Malawi is a huge body of water, estimated at 8.4 quadrillion litres (that’s 15 zeros!). With so much space, variation of a species can occur. The yellow morph of this cichlid is only found in one small area of Lake Malawi (Lion’s Cove). Scientific naming rules state the first name to describe the species sticks. This species was first described in the 1950s as a whiteish-blue fish.
