It’s with great sadness that we tell you all that our sweet Luna died last night, her heart failed, she was so loved and will be so missed! She was the biggest part of our lives and we are devastated. 🐶 she will be remembered with much love and happiness.

I’ve had a few enquiries this week from clients wanting to book a behavioural appointment, concerned about changes in their dog’s behaviour.

After discussing and gaining more information about their dog, my advice was to seek veterinary care for a health check.

Any sudden behaviour changes can be linked to pain, discomfort or a medical condition but many dog’s will still continue to play, run and chase a ball.

Here are a few behavioural signs that might indicate that your dog is experiencing pain:

Not wanting to be touched

Excessive licking

Excessive vocalisation

Restlessness

Noise sensitivity

Aggression

Seeking veterinary care and advice is the first step to rule out any pain or discomfort.

Look at these two cuties 🥰

This is Shadow & Buster, 1 year old Labradors with beautiful personalities and great enthusiasm about the world.
We’re helping to teach in and out of home introducing cue words and learning recall.

After our first session they both did amazing, making some lovely choices with the help from their guardians 🤩

Looking forward to catching up with them all soon ☺️

It’s been a pleasure helping Barney and his family over the past few months, seeing them grow in confidence together.

On our last session we let Barney off lead in a safe space, this was a big step for his family and very proud of them all.

Barney really showed us his great engagement with their brilliant encouragement.

Sadly the dog training industry is unregulated meaning that anyone can call themselves a dog trainer or behaviourist.

There are no levels of qualification, experience or any need for continuing professional development making it quite easy for anyone to set up a dog training business but making it hard to find the best advice or know who to turn to for help.

These are some helpful suggestions to ask when looking and researching for a dog trainer or behaviourist, contacting more than one gives you an idea of who you would like to work with and is best suited to support you and your dog’s individual needs.

🐕What experience do they have working with dogs and puppies?

🐕What qualifications do they have? Researching the organisation.

🐕What training methods do they use and follow?
There are different types, techniques, equipment and methods used.

🐕What happens if my dog gets it right?

🐕What happens if my dog gets it wrong?

🐕Are they members of any professional organisations where they are listed as a dog trainer or behaviourist?

As part of the joining process to become a member to many force free organisations, a trainer or behaviourist will need to provide evidence of X amount of hours per year of continuing professional development, they will need to provide evidence of their work, follow force free, positive ethics and methods, also working alongside veterinary professionals and other specialists.

🐕Are they Continuing Professional Development?

An important part of working in the dog training industry is furthering knowledge, investing time and money to become the best trainer/behaviourist they can be, using the latest science and new discoveries that are changing all time.

A professional dog trainer or behaviourist will be able to answer these questions, providing all the information for you to make your decision.
