🐰💩 RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK - DIGESTION 💩🐰
Rabbits have a unique and delicate digestive system. Proper digestion is vital for their overall health and issues can quickly become serious if not addressed.
What to watch out for:
🐾 GI Stasis - a potentially life-threatening condition where the digestive system slows down or stops. Signs include a loss of appetite, lethargy and small or no faecal pellets.
🐾 Bloating - can be very painful and needs immediate veterinary attention.
🐾 Diarrhoea - often indicates a dietary issue or infection.
Types of rabbit poo:
🐾 Caecotrophs - these are soft, shiny and look like a small bunch of grapes. Your rabbit should eat these directly from their bottom as they produce them, therefore they should rarely be seen.
🐾 Faecal pellets - these are large, dry pellets and you should be able to see bits of chewed hay in them. They shouldn't smell and should crumble if you press on them.
Tips for a health digestive system:
🐾 Unlimited hay - provide unlimited access to fresh, high quality hay.
🐾 Balanced diet - include fresh leafy greens and a small amount of pellets. Avoid high-carb foods like bread and crackers.
🐾 Regular check-ups - regular vet visits can help catch and treat issues early.
