It's that time of year again and our annual reminder to keep the mince pies out of reach of your pets! As well as the Christmas cake and puddings. Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants can all be toxic to dogs - even small quantities can cause kidney failure in some individuals. As always, if your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have done call us straight away for advice.

What can you do at home to help your pet with arthritis? Lots!

🐾 Make sure your pet is a healthy weight - our team will be happy to advise if you are not sure.
🐾 Ensure your pet can access resources (food, water, litter tray and sleeping areas) without having to use the stairs.
🐾 Adding a ramp to enable your cat to walk up onto surfaces such as their bed or their favourite sleeping spot, or to help your dog get in our out of the car.
🐾 Litter tray access for cats – having at least one side of the litter tray at a lower level makes it easier for your cat to get inside. Consider using a larger litter tray and having trays in different locations. Even if your cat doesn’t normally use a litter tray indoors, it is worth considering setting one up just in case they need it as they get older.
🐾 Use of mats or rugs to prevent slipping on laminate/wooden floors.
🐾 Helping your pet with grooming and nail care.
🐾 Provide a comfortable and supportive bed.
🐾 Regular, shorter walks may now be better for your dog than less frequent long walks. Hydrotherapy may also be a great option. Our team will be happy to advise.

Arthritis is not just a condition we see in dogs, it is very common in older cats. Cats are masters of disguise, so it is important to actively look for signs they may be in pain.

🐈Mobility - your cat with arthritis may be reluctant to:
• Jump up or down onto or off of surfaces
• Go up and/or down stairs
• Jump or climb into/onto their favourite bed
• Play
• Use scratching posts (or other substrates)
They may also have difficulty using a high sided litter tray, which can result in accidents around the house, or using the cat flap.

🐱Behaviour - your cat with arthritis may be:
• Grumpy or less happy with people and other animals in the house
• More withdrawn – interacting less with others in the house
• Less active
• Sleeping in different locations e.g., on the floor
• Not coming upstairs/into the house any more
They may also struggle to groom themselves, and therefore suffer with poor coat quality or matting.

Fortunately there is lots we can do to help cats with arthritis, so if you are worried your cat is showing signs mention it at your cat's next health check or book an appointment with one of our vets.

This is Dexter enjoying his treatment on the PEMF mat 🥰 PEMF stands for 'pulsed electromagnetic field' therapy mat. We often combine this treatment with laser therapy for our arthritic patients, with some owners referring to it as the 'magic mat' as their dogs are so relaxed while on it!

You can read more about complementary therapies for arthritis patients on our website: https://www.greenbayvets.co.uk/services/laser-treatment/.

Arthritis is common in pet dogs, especially as they get older. Do you know the signs to look out for?

🐾 Reluctance to get up, especially after resting.
🐾 Difficulty with stairs, or getting in and out of the car.
🐾 Signs of pain e.g. limping, crying out.
🐾 Slowing down, or not wanting to walk as far.
🐾 Joint chewing or licking.

Many of these signs are mistaken for the dog 'just getting old' but there is a lot that can be done to improve comfort and mobility in these pets and help them live their best lives 💕

The beautiful Maeve has spent a lot of time with us in recent months. Back in July she was in a car accident and sadly broke a hind leg. After a complex, but successful operation on her broken leg she has had a number of therapeutic ultrasound and laser treatments on her back where she was getting pain as a result of where she had changed her movement to compensate for the broken leg. As a result she is moving a lot better, her owners are very pleased with her progress and how relaxed she is visiting the surgery to have her therapies.

Complementary therapies like these can help with a range of conditions such as arthritis and musculoskeletal injuries - you can find out more on our website: https://www.greenbayvets.co.uk/services/laser-treatment/.
