The short answer is not really. It is theoretically possible for them to heal without medication, but it would require dramatic management changes, and so arguably, not really healing on their own. It would also be a long, slow process, which means your horse will suffer the pain of gastric ulcers for much longer than is necessary, which would be a welfare issue.
If you suspect your horse may have ulcers, the best thing you can do is consult your vet and get a veterinary-led diagnosis.
If this leads to medication under the direction of your vet, there is lots you can do additionally to support your horse's healing journey and we discuss some of those in our new blog post. Head on over to have a read - it will be worth 10minutes of your time!

Electrolyte supplementation is really important for horses that are in medium to hard work and are sweating regularly, but did you know that even your horse at grass will sweat in this warm weather, AND that electrolytes can also be lost in urine and faeces. A horse at grass may not be able to replace the lost minerals through their grazing alone, so is likely to need supplementation with electrolytes.
Electrolye deficiency can lead to poor performance, muscle cramps, low mood, and a dull coat. An imbalance of fluids in the cells can affect energy production and efficiency.
Always make sure your horse has access to fresh, clean drinking water and supplement with electrolytes to ensure healthy hydration and a mineral balance to support your horse's optimal health.

Methyl sulphonyl methane (MSM) is a rich bio-available sulphur which offers complementary support for maintaining healthy tendons, ligaments and connective tissues

If you have a horse that is sensitive to midge bites (aka sweet itch) then get prepared! This warm, but dry weather we have been having is great for flies, but not so much for midges.
Midges like to breed in/around water 💧 and prefer warm, but moist conditions. With the weather set to break over the weekend and thunder storms ⛈️ forecast here in the UK, we might well see an explosion in midge numbers, sending your best friend itch crazy.
Make sure they are clean and bathed while the weather is still warm and dry, wash and dry their sweet itch rug, consider housing at dawn and dusk when midges are most active (i.e. stable overnight) and last but not least ‼️ make sure you have stocked up on your favourite fly & midge repellent ‼️ don't skimp on this over the coming week ‼️
If you want any advice on how to help your sweet itch sufferer don't be shy, drop me a message or give me a call, contact details available on the link in our bio.
PS apologies to those of you who have already had a ton of rain this week but it sounds like there is more to come.
Have you checked out the new products in store? There are so many!
Also we now do click & collect on horse feed and bedding, so if you're local to North Devon drop us a message if you dont see what you want and keep an eye on our feed, bedding and forage pages as we are loading new products daily!
The midge responsible for the itch in sweet itch is only about 2mm in length - it is teeny tiny! That is why regular fly rugs won't work, the mesh is too large and will protect against larger flies only.
You need a fine mesh rug designed to keep the tiny culicoides midge out.
Shop now for fly and sweet itch rugs - we have got you covered!

Did you know that the midges responsible for sweet itch - the culicoides pulicaris midge - cannot fly in winds stronger than about 7mph (or 6 knots), so next time we have a windy day, consider whether you could let your sweet itch sufferer have a rug free day!
You could also take the opportunity to wash it and dry it! I recommend that you still apply plenty of fly spray to your horse to be sure they don't get bothered if the wind drops for a moment.

All horses can be affected by Sweet Itch, although some breeds are more likely to be affected.
