Did you know that reishi comes in different colours? 🖤 We’re in love with the dark, glossy fruiting bodies of this Black Reishi (Ganoderma sinense). It’s the same species that we use in our Black Reishi skull kits and has proven very popular due to its uniquely gorgeous looks!

We’re big fans of how you can enjoy watching reishi grow over many months and then let it dry out to preserve its beauty, making it a truly ornamental species of fungi 🍄

A small harvest of porcelain mushrooms! These are Oudemansiella canarii and a cousin to our native Oudemansiella mucida. Whilst both are technically edible, our native porcelain mushrooms have a layer of transparent mucus covering their cap whereas these ones are not slimy, giving them more culinary appeal.

When eaten raw, they’re pleasant and crisp, tasting much like a fresh radish! We can imagine these delicate mushrooms being a great addition to salads 🥗 Cooked they still retained a little of that pepperiness and they had a satisfying bite.

These got the thumbs up from the Fat Fox team on the taste test! Would you like to see these in a kit? 😃

🍄‍🟫🧫 Check out this little Porcelain Mushroom (Oudemansiella canarii) fruiting away on agar! It’s a relative of the Porcelain mushroom (Oudemansiella mucida) you’ll find growing on dead and dying trees across the UK, but doesn’t have that signature slimy texture.

🍁Check out this autumnal beauty!🍂

🌰We’ve got a new limited run Autumn mushroom growing kit on the scene : The Speckled Chestnut.

🧡Philota adiposa have beautiful rust orange caps that stand out in the template forests they call home. They have long history of culinary use in Japan (where they are known as Numerisugitake), but have only recently started being grown in western countries.

🍜 They have a nutty, slightly sweet flavour with a lovely texture that stays firm when cooked. Their long, firm stems are tender and edible. They also work well with a variety of Japanese - inspied dishes and are a great addition to miso soups and ramen.

They take a bit longer to reach full maturity than other species, meaning you’ll get more time to admire this stunning mushroom as it grows.

✨What a fantastic weekend we had at !

A big thank you to , and the whole crew for putting on a weekend of fun, science & magic 🍄✨  Fat Fox is making a push to cultivate more UK native species this year and we brought along our mobile flow hood to take cultures. 🧫

We were really inspired by our conversations with from , , .as.fungi, and so many others about spreading the proverbial and literal native spores. And thank you to for their native liquid cultures! 🧪

Also, a special thanks to the folks who brought us native species to clone:

from who not only brought us loads of amazing finds, but also took us on a whirlwind mushroom hunting trip; , & (who also made the most amazing clay map of the evolution of fungi! 🤯), Melissa from and everyone else who brought us amazing specimens to clone!

It was great to catch up with some old friends: , , from , , ,   from , and ._.flo who played some of our reishi beautifully 🎶

We were also really excited to meet .mush.chris & from .mushrooms, , , , , Jasper from , the amazing crew from , , Craig from (who makes the reishi coolest skulls!), .and.moon & so many others I’m forgetting to add here!

Fat Fox is excited to be attending the magical next weekend - a fabulous fungi-focused festival in the Sussex countryside!
