🐾 ZEN UPDATE 🐾

Unfortunately due to a number of factors, including rising costs and having two human babies to care for, I am having to put Zen on hold for the time being. I have loved training and caring for your dogs over the last few years; I will miss their happy faces and waggy tails, so please keep sending me updates on how they’re doing. I can’t thank all my lovely clients enough for making Zen such a friendly positive place over the years and wish all the best to you and your fur-babies 🐾

Goodbye for now! 🐶

I’m now off on maternity leave to make the most of the last few weeks before baby makes an appearance! Thank you so much to everyone who has been a part of Zen this year - from my furry walking buddies, to the beautiful puppies coming through training, to my incredible advanced class who have helped me tidy chairs, tables and equipment away as I get more massive - you have all made this little business so fulfilling and I wish you all the best with your doggies!

Keep in touch and I’ll see you for more training and doggie fun in a few months time 💙🐾

P.S. healthy end of course treats purchased at Healthy Pet Store Totton. Worth a look for good quality treats and food 🐾

Here’s a quick video showing the ‘this way’ cue we learn in our classes. This walk was in sight of a busy road and as Norma was a bit of a car chaser when younger, I wanted to keep her quite close by. This cue keeps Norma’s focus on me and brings her back to be close to me while still allowing her freedom near a distraction. Has anyone else practiced this out and about? 🐾

Those of you who have attended our classes over the last couple of years will have met our brilliant volunteer Lexi. Sadly for us, Lexi is moving back to her home country Canada so while we’ll really miss her help, company and passion for dogs, we wish her the very best of luck on her next adventure. Thank you Lexi Dutnall for being a fantastic part of Zen! 🐾

Sadly dog theft seems to be on the rise during the pandemic so taking extra precautions can help keep your dog safe. I would also suggest:

🐾 Use a carabiner clip between your dog’s harness and lead so it is harder for them to be unclipped by a thief
🐾 Walk with another person and avoid walking at night if possible
🐾 Be vigilant of any suspicious activity, such as people following your dog, asking odd questions about their age or breed, or trying to take photos of your dog. Report anything unusual 🐕

Losing your dog or having them taken from you, is an unbearable thought. Each year, 2,000 dogs are stolen in the UK and there are reports that this is on the rise during the pandemic 🐾
Follow these safety tips to keep your dog safe from theft and don't forget to share them with other dog owners 🐶💛

Lockdown Socialisation Tip #3

Socialise to different vehicles 🐾 use your daily exercise to walk puppy near a road or train track. Ideally pick somewhere without many other people and where you can just stand for a while to let puppy take in the experience.

As always, let puppy take their time, calmly reassure them that everything is okay and move further away if they are scared or uncomfortable. Try to experience as many vehicles as possible:
- Cars
- Lorries
- Buses
- Bin Truck (anything with air brakes!)
- Bicycles
- Trains
- The more the better!
(I know we are all aware, but keep safe while out and about and keep to the government guidelines when planning socialisation experiences out of the house)

Lockdown Socialisation Tip #2

Help puppy get used to different clothing (on humans that is!). Try coming into the room wearing different hats, a walking stick or noisy clothes like waterproof trousers. Or try fluorescent clothing - especially good for getting puppy used to people like the post person!

If puppy is curious or a bit unsure just sit quietly and let them take it all in and work out that these different clothes are nothing to worry about. This will help them to encounter all sorts of different people out in the world (once we’re allowed out) without being spooked by something out of the ordinary 🐾

Lockdown Socialisation Tip #1

If it’s hard to get out and about with your puppy during lockdown, start inside and get puppy used to household objects. Turn on the hoover or hairdryer and let puppy observe at a distance they’re comfortable with. Give them time to work it out on their own and reward and praise if they are relaxed and happy.

As with any socialisation, never force puppy to do anything if they aren’t comfortable; move the Hoover further away or try with something quieter 🐾

🐶 Training Class Update 🐶

I have been advised by Sway Village Hall that they will not be opening to user groups until September. This is because the hall is used by the nursery so this decision is to keep the children using the hall as safe as possible.

It is likely that Zen will be back up and running for classes around October time as long as it is safe to do so. I will keep you updated and let you know as soon as we can get back to training together 🐶💕

Training Classes and Coronavirus

EDIT 18/03/2020: In light of the latest guidance advising pregnant women to self-isolate, all training and care services have been cancelled for mine and everyone else’s health. I am so sorry I couldn’t properly say goodbye to many of you but I hope to see you all again once we have some normality back. I am officially starting my maternity leave from now but please do feel free to message or email me with any questions. Stay safe and best wishes to everyone 🐾💕

As of the present our training classes on Wednesday evening will be running as usual. We are keeping a close eye on the situation as it develops and any changes or cancellations to classes will be communicated as soon as possible.

We have hot water and hand washing facilities at the hall so please do utilise these before and after your class. If you are at all unwell please do not attend your class. We are currently taking the situation day by day so please keep an eye out for any updates and stay safe with your pups 🐶🐾

I have an honours degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of the West of England and I am trained in dog first aid, fully licenced and insured. I’m based in Eling, where we are located on the edge of a nature reserve, 5 minutes from the beach and right on the outskirts of the beautiful New Forest.

Zen Dog Care and Training strives to make your life more peaceful by providing loving care for your dog when you need it, giving you the confidence your dog will be well looked after.
