🚨⚠️Veterinary Attestation Visit Expiry Warning⚠️🚨

Last year, on the 13th December 2023, a new piece of legislation came in which requires a vet to have visited your farm in the last year to inspect all stock going to market or abattoirs.
This form must be updated annually. We carried out a lot of attestation visits in November and December 2023, one of which may have been yours!

If your attestation form is due to run out soon, and you need to update yours, please ring Debbie (01327 350239) as soon as possible - we kindly request you don’t leave it to the last minute because we may not be able to fit you in at short notice...

An attestation visit requires a vet to see all stock on farm- this may include cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats- that may enter the human food chain. Once completed, the form and associated Veterinary Attestation Number (VAN), covers you for a year.

If you are part of any of the following schemes, the requirements for EU laws are fulfilled and a VAN is not required. The compliant schemes are:
o Red Tractor
o Lion Quality
o Farm Assured Welsh Livestock Beef and Lamb Scheme/ Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers Ltd
o Poultry Health Scheme
o RSPCA Assured

If a farm annual health and welfare review has occurred as part of the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway (AHWP), then a VAN number will be included in part of the summary information sent.
If you have any questions about the VAN legislation, or you want to check if you need one, please contact us to ask!

Our Farm Vets team shared this lovely outcome a few weeks ago!

Sarah and Bex were called to a farrowing as unfortunately Peppa was having some difficulty with passing the first piglet - he was a big boy!

Sarah was able to assist her to safely deliver a strong healthy piglet. Peppa needed a bit more help with the others too however after a team effort 6 healthy live piglets were born. In total 4 boys and 2 girls!

🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷

Both mum and all of her babies are doing well. If you would like to see how they are getting on, and continue to follow their adventures, then you can find them on YouTube at Mykey’s Farm Hillcrest! 🐖

There is now less than one month to go for bird keepers who haven’t done so yet to register with Animal and Plant Health Agency 🦆

Keepers in England and Wales must register by 1 October 2024, and keepers in Scotland must register by 1 December 2024.

By registering, you will help manage potential bird flu outbreaks and limit any spread. Keepers will also receive advice on steps to take to protect the health of their birds. 🐓

***Haemonchus alert***
Sheep, goat and alpaca owners should be aware we are currently seeing numerous cases of Haemonchus in our region. The mature larvae and adult stages of this parasite are blood feeders and sudden death associated with a severe anaemia is the main sign to watch for. Anaemic animals may be quieter than usual and have increased respiratory rates - diarrhoea is not usually seen in Haemonchus cases. Less acute cases will mimic fluke with weight loss, bottle jaw ands lethargy. All ages of stock are susceptible.
We can provide presumptive diagnosis based on high WEC or more conclusive results via post mortem examination. Please contact us if you are concerned.

🐑The SCOPS podcast is back for a second series🎉

Ben is joined by Dr Philip Skuce, vet Rob Howe and farmer Rich Thomas to discuss
environmental impacts and how acting on the SCOPS principles can help to reduce the impact of medicine use on the environment. They ask what it means in practice for parasite control in sheep and cattle, how achievable it is and what tools there are to enable it?
