Happy Hounds Towcester

Happy Hounds Towcester Small Doggy Daycare, Grooming & Home Boarding Facility. Licence: LN/201800077 I am Dog First Aid trained and have taken many courses throughout the years.
(71)

I have a wonderful Doggy Daycare facility in my large garden, hosting agility equipment, as well as relaxation areas and a huge space for them to roam free! Currently studying for my Level 3 Diploma in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare. I also offer Dog Grooming in my converted garage. This gives dogs a wonderful environment to be groomed in. As they can chose to watch the others play, or can be

isolated away from them for a personal groom. This usually takes away any anguish or fear or nervousness. I have groomed now for over 5 years and have had a lot of experience handling dogs. Also having previously worked in kennels also.

It’s going to very warm this week…

Please keep an eye on your dogs

1) don’t leave them in cars
2) make sure they have water (use a slow feeder bowl to help them not gulp water and get an upset stomach.
3) get those paddling pools out - Aldi have them for £7.99 at the moment- fill them with a couple of inches of water and then plastic balls for a really enriching experience
4) scatter feeding with kibble and treats to keep thier minds occupied and manage food at a better rate in warm
Weather
5) Frozen carrots are a great cooling treat
6) cooling mats on the floor and if your dog has a crate, put them on top of the crate to create a cooling space for your dogs to ‘chill out’ in.
7) wet towels (not freezing cold water) to help them cool slowly, you don’t want to give them a cold shock, we just want to help cool them gently.
8) walks - your dog DOES NOT! Need a walk every day, if it’s too hot don’t take them, let them rest, chill and do the enrichment games.
9) your dogs may lose their appetite that’s not unusual so don’t be surprised that they get hungry when the sun goes down.

Please take care and look after your amazing dogs in this changing weather conditions (as we have potential storms Thursday!)

⚠️ID TAGS⚠️

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but we would recommend this).

You do not have to put your dogs name on the tag, this is optional. Unfortunately dog theft is a real danger and if the thief knows the name of your dog this may help them pass on the dog to the unsuspecting new owners because it appears they know the dog because the dog responds to their name. We would therefore recommend, you do not put your dogs name on the tag.

An example of the information to put on a dog tag is:

Mr A Smtih
No 54, BH17 7TD
01202 232218

OR

Mr A Smtih
54 Letsbe Avenue
BH17 7TD
01202 232218

Certain dogs are exempt from having to wear a collar with a dog tag. They are:

• Any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
• Any dog while being used in emergency rescue work.
• Any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, HM Customs and Excise or the police.
• Any dog while being used for driving or tending cattle or sheep.
• Any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin.
• Any dog while being used for sporting purposes.

Such a common issue ❗
I know many people really struggle with this and the most important step to stop or limit this is sometimes not taken.
For aesthetic reasons or for financial reasons or both (which I absolutely understand) the crucial step of stopping this behaviour being repeated and rehearsed over and over is not taken.
For aesthetic reasons...
I get it, you have worked hard and have a beautiful home and fence but now your dog is launching themselves at that beautiful fence and at every dog, person or car that passes.
It may now be a "game" that they wait for hours and hours to play.

That "game" is causing huge stress in your dog.

Asking someone to block that view through that fence or to create a temporary fence further back is often met with resistance.
Some people may struggle financially with a cheap option to block that view.
Try w**d mat or thick opaque shade cloth to temporary staple to the fence, its a very reasonable price and comes in long lengths. Or look around the home for an old tarpaulin, there are very cheap or free options.

If you have a dog that sits on the deck and then launches into this "game" from there, change the area.
That "launch pad" WILL be used over and over if left.

This won't just stop.

Another reason people are hesitant to stop this is they see their dog enjoys this "game". They see the pacing while waiting, the anticipation and that is part of the issue. Reactivity can be highly stressful for dogs.
They are stuck in a loop and need help to stop.

Limiting opportunity is always a first step and from there you can put in other ways to help....but for some dogs, limiting the vision (and/or access to the fence line) will stop the behaviour immediately.

****Forever home needed for Milo!*****

Definitely a family who can either work him, keep on a farm, or have the time and energy to get him to his full potential!

Everyone - meet Milo!

What you need to know:
1 year old Jack Russell.
Neutered and Vaccinated - up to date, due booster in August
Flea, wormed and Insured

Doesn’t mind:
The vets
The groomers
Loves the car
Doggy daycare
People
Horses (on lead)
Kids (hasn’t met tiny ones)

Things that MUST be worked on:
His recall isn’t great and he is a bit of an escapee!
He can be destructive when left alone. Needs a job to do!
Energy levels are high and struggle to keep weight on him.
Sleeps in bedroom and is maybe at a point of separation anxiety so would need to be with someone to build that bond, trust, rapport.

He is a very loving and sweet dog with a caring and fun nature!
Won’t be just going to anyone!
Hes good with other dogs. Meets cats in the the street, like most dogs wants to chase, may be different if introduced slowly into a home.

🐶🐶🐶Please message me direct if you have any questions and I can pass across to his lovely owners🐶🐶🐶

Diabetes is one of the most common hormonal diseases in a dog. Look out for these 4 signs:

🔸INCREASED URINATION🔸
Caused by the glucose drawing water with it into the urine

🔸EXCESSIVE THIRST🔸
Caused by the body trying to keep up with the excess fluid loss

🔸INCREASED HUNGER🔸
Because the body thinks it’s starving

🔸WEIGHT LOSS🔸
Because sugars are lost in the urine. This means the dog effectively isn’t getting enough calories and so the body starts to break down the fat reserves as well.

You know your dog best, if they don’t have the symptoms listed above but you are still concerned it’s always best to contact your vet.

🔹WHAT IS DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS🔹
Left untreated, diabetes can lead to a much more serious condition called ‘diabetic ketoacidosis’ (DKA). DKA is when a product called ketones builds up in the body if cells aren’t able to get the energy from blood sugars. Ketones in large number are extremely dangerous and cause the following symptoms:
🔸Vomiting
🔸Diarrhoea
🔸Not eating
🔸Low energy
🔸Appearing unsteady (as if they are drunk)
🔸Collapse
🔸Breath that smells sweet (like nail polish remover or pear drops)

Symptoms of DKA are an emergency - if you notice them, contact your vet immediately

🔹WHAT IS CANINE HYPO?🔹
Hypoglycemia refers to an abnormal decrease of glucose concentration in the blood, or more simply - low blood sugar levels.

Emergency First Aid for Canine Hypo
🔸Contact your vet immediately for an emergency appointment
🔸Rub something very sugary such as honey or jam onto your dog’s gums (be careful not to get bitten)

Some people are friendly and want to socialise with everyone they meet. Some people prefer their own company and that of their family only. Introverts and extroverts...

Same with dogs...dogs have unique personalities with unique preferences so try not to be disappointed that they don't want to engage and play with every dog they meet. It has nothing to do with them being socialised or unsocialised...

Don't be disappointed when they are not sociable to every dog in the park.

It's not a behaviourial issue. It's not an issue at all actually. It's just a matter of choice🙂

If your dog is super friendly, make sure you redirect him appropriately when he is running up to engage with more introverted dogs.

The old myths about rapeseed being dangerous are doing the rounds again I see!!

It is not the rapeseed causing dangerous toxic signs. However letting your dog run through rapeseed fields is not advisable not just because of the fertiliser/herbicide that could of been sprayed on it (that would cause toxic signs) but because it’s a farmers produce.
