๐ŸŽ‰Happy Chinese New Year! ๆ–ฐๅนดๅฟซไน

๐Ÿ2025 is the year of the snake, so here are some snake facts for youโ€ฆ

1. There are 3,789 snake species worldwide.
2. Scientists believe snakes evolved anywhere from 98 to 142 million years ago.
3. Most snakes live on land, yet around 70 species of snakes live in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
4. Snakes flick out their tongues to pick up scent molecules through their tongues, helping them smell.
5. Snakes donโ€™t have eyelids. This means they donโ€™t blink and sleep with their eyes wide open.

I'm delighted to be speaking at the IPET Network POW WOW conference today in Chester, joining them virtually. The attendees work across the pet industry, and I will present 'From Prehistoric Companions to Fur Babies: What Science Reveals about the Human-Animal Bond. I will be discussing how we developed a deep need to have pets and the practical implications for pet guardians, providing valuable insights for their work. Fingers crossed, they find it interesting and helpful!

๐Ÿ“ท When you get sent a photo of dog p**p and it makes you happy. [Note: it did go in the bin!]

Iโ€™ve been helping Team Ceilidh for the past year to gain confidence out and about, and lower arousal levels at home. Having a poo or wee on walks can be difficult for young and or nervous dogs because during the โ€˜doโ€™ youโ€™re vulnerable, it signals to others/predators you exist in the environment, and your muscles need to be relaxed enough too go - thatโ€™s unless itโ€™s a completely terrifying situation or youโ€™re poorly then it all comes out!

No doubt Ceilidh is feeling flushed with her success! ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ€œCats have long posed a challenge for researchers as they can be a little more tricky when it comes to training. However, recent breakthroughs have made studying cats' brains more feasible. Scientists have developed crochet hats embedded with electrodes to monitor brain activity without requiring cats to remain perfectly still in confined spaces.

A recent study led by Delsart et al. (2024) at the Universitรฉ de Montrรฉal introduced these specially designed hats to see if researchers could capture brain activity while the cats were awake and moving naturally and to understand how their brains respond to different types of sensory experiences.โ€ Learn more about animal brain scans, its relevance for pet owners/guardians, and see the cats in hats at

๐Ÿ™A big thank you goes out to Lauren Twiddle who joined me as a guest speaker at ucbishopburton (UCBB). Our MSc Applied Animal Behaviour & Training plus MSc Animal Behaviour & Welfare cohort had the pleasure of Lauren sharing her insights as a zoo keeper including the keeper-animal relationship. The focus was on human-animal interactions and relationships with non-pet animals, specifically animals in zoological settings.

Lauren has a BSc in Zoology and is a graduate of UCBB having completed her MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, and has recently moved into education, focusing on science. I am very grateful to Lauren for giving up her precious time to join us. You can learn more about zoo keeping and Laurenโ€™s research from our recent Coffee & Chat episode - see link in the comments.

A recent study by Kujala et al. (2024) has taken a closer look at how empathy shapes the human brainโ€™s ability to interpret emotional expressions in humans and dogs.

The research produced some interesting insights. For example, when participants viewed happy and aggressive faces, whether human or canine, this activated the brain more intensely than neutral expressions. This demonstrates that emotionally significant faces demand greater attention. This makes sense, considering this would have adaptive value; if someone or something shows high arousal indicators, such as widened eyes, dilated pupils, or raised hackles, you want to pay attention as this increases your chances of survival (such as promoting cooperation, reproduction, or flight/fight)!

Did you know that a dogโ€™s brain develops most rapidly in their first three years, making this the prime time to teach them the behaviours and skills theyโ€™ll carry for life? Peer-reviewed studies highlight that early training can reduce anxiety, strengthen the dog-owner bond, and set the stage for long-term happiness and good behaviour. Yet the most common age dogs that are relinquished into rescue is between 7-36 months (during adolescence)!

๐ŸŽ“ Our award-winning expert-led courses focus on proven methods to bring out the best in your dog. From building their confidence to helping them navigate the world with ease, youโ€™ll gain practical skills to handle any situation while enjoying a calmer, more contented companion.

For many of us the New Year marks a fresh start with promises that โ€œthis is the year I willโ€ฆโ€.

The most popular resolutions are related to physical and emotional wellbeing. Of a CNN survey that polled 3,000 people, seven out of ten participants said they will be joining a gym or go jogging in the first two weeks of January. Yet it can be tough to kick the old-habits. Research shows that the average Briton breaks their resolution[s] just nine days into the New Year!

Fireworks can be overwhelming for many animals, so taking steps to support them during this time is essential. Evidence shows that preparation and a calming environment can make a big difference to their stress levels.

๐ŸŒŸ Plan ahead: Check your garden is secure, bring pets indoors, and create a quiet, safe space where they can relax.
๐ŸŒŸ Reduce noise: Use calming music, white noise, or the TV to help mask the sound of fireworks.
๐ŸŒŸ Engage them: Offer long-lasting chews or food-dispensing toys to help distract and calm.
๐ŸŒŸ Respect their needs: Some pets may seek comfort, while others prefer to be left alone. Allow them the choice.

For more evidence-based tips on keeping your pets calm and safe, check out our quick tips guide, attached.
