Dogs’ sense of smell has long been celebrated, from sniffing out missing persons to detecting diseases in humans. Now, research published in Veterinary Oncology reveals that dogs can also detect cancer in their canine peers.

By studying behavioural responses to urine samples from both healthy and cancer-affected dogs, the researchers have provided new insights into how this innate ability might function. The findings have significant implications for multi-dog or multi-species households and the broader potential for dogs to contribute to veterinary and human healthcare. Researchers at ELTE Department of Ethology in Hungary have found dogs recognise multiple familiar speakers - this has previously been demonstrated in species such as horses and macaques. 🎄 The countdown to Christmas has begun!

Our homes are typically filled by now with Christmas trees, baubles, gift wrap, interesting smells and food. For some pets, this might be the first time they’ve experienced visitors to the home or being around unfamiliar people for a prolonged period, which can impact our pets. For example, during the festive season, we see a significant increase in veterinary and hospital visits where pets accidentally consume items that can be harmful to them, and well-meaning family members or visitors may get bitten.

🌟 Huge congratulations to Alessandro! 🌟

Over the past ten weeks, Alessandro has been working so hard to overcome his fear of dogs, and what an incredible journey it’s been. From feeling nervous even to look at dogs to walking confidently through the park as they play off-lead around him, Alessandro has made amazing progress with his KAD Kids Around Dogs programme.

His dream was to walk to school through the park, and now, thanks to his determination and courage, that dream has become a reality. From learning dog facts, different dog breeds and body language to playing dog races with Blaze and stroking others, Alessandro has truly leapt over every hurdle.

I couldn’t be prouder of his efforts and bravery. Awesome work, Team Alessandro - you’ve smashed it! 🎉

It was lovely to catch up with Puppy & Dog School graduate Freddie who is about to become a big brother to a new baby. He’s doing brilliantly with all his training and he was so proud to show me his stuffed kong. 🥰 Congratulations to Team Freddie with the new arrival due very soon! 💝🐾

A huge well done and congrats to Team Misio who finished their behavioural programme with me this week, after nine months. 🙌

Gorgeous Misio had been attacked several times including one requiring veterinary treatment, during his teens. The trauma from these handful of incidents had a significant impact, causing Misio to become over-reactive around other dogs and sudden movements such as joggers/cyclists, etc. We worked on various aspects to modify Misio’s behaviour, as well as muzzle training to ensure his owner felt more confident. Through his dog dad’s dedication and efforts, they have come out the other side and he’s now able to enjoy his walks again, rolling around in the mud and wading in water. Awesome effort Team Misio 🎉🐾
