What is real-world dog training? It involves preparing your dog by training them in various environments, ensuring they can exhibit desired behaviours wherever you go. However, we do not recommend introducing your dog to a highly stimulating environment without prior training or strategies to manage their behaviour. Collaborating with a behaviourist can provide you and your dog with the necessary guidance to gradually expose them to these situations and help them thrive. If you're interested in learning more about how we can assist you, please reach out.

If you truly want to know what a trainer prioritizes, and how deeply they think about how to actually solve problems which helps dogs live better lives (typically, their stated goal), ask, or watch how much time, effort, and passion they put into not just training the human to do what they the trainer does, but how much time, effort, and passion they put into developing their EQ, communication skills, and their understanding of how to motivate and persuade a human being.

It’s the exceptionally rare trainer who sees the truly big picture of what actually helps dogs—beyond the stuff they (the trainer) personally enjoy and are passionate about. They’ll crow about their dedication to saving dogs, but then you’ll listen to them and watch their actions, and you’ll see what they truly care about…typically themselves.

Should you be a highly skilled dog trainer? Of course—but on its own that’s beginner level, amateur stuff. What will cause an owner to change their behavior, to use the tools, to implement the training, and to do that which is out of their comfort zone doesn’t come from your leash handling skills or your ability to “speak dog” or your impeccable timing. No, it comes from all the stuff so many of you have very little interest in…deeply helping/training human beings.

The great trainers I know know all the dog-centric training stuff backwards and forwards, AND they’ve spent an inordinate amount of time working to understand,
communicate, and positively motivate/influence owners—and they’ve worked a ton on their “bedside manner”, or personal presentation to ensure they don’t get in the way with any of their own “baggage.”

At the end of the day, you’re training two different species, and to think that the one who will be taking over for you after you’re done should receive far less focus than the species who will be following their lead in your absence tells me everything I need to know about what you truly care about and how deeply you’re able to process, comprehend, and prioritize what’s actually needed.

It’s no wonder we hear the constant refrain: dogs are easy, it’s the humans who are difficult. That’s what happens when you focus far more on one than the other—especially when you focus on the easier, less complex of the two.

A little bit more about us!

The Pet Experience Training and Behaviour Ltd was established in 2006 by Sarah Easterbrook. Originally providing dog training and pet behavioural services to Weymouth and Dorchester. It has since gone from strength to strength and now covers the South West Region.

Group Dog Training Classes are currently available in Weymouth, Sherborne and Bridport. These classes have been specifically designed by The Pet Experience Training and Behaviour Ltd to provide a fun yet practical environment in which to train your dog. Novice through to Gold classes are based around general obedience training, allowing you to have a well-trained dog that you can control both on and off lead. Diamond and Platinum provide more challenging activities such as trick and scent work.

One-to-One Private Training sessions are available across the South West. This is highly recommended for anyone bringing a new puppy or rescue dog into their home. This can be done prior to the puppy/dog arriving to set you up for the best way to help settle your new addition along with avoiding falling into bad habits. Also, we can visit once the new puppy/dog has arrived to help with house training, nipping or jumping up.

One-to-One's are also for people that just need help with one specific issue such as pulling on the lead.
