Old world alert! The Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula (Monocentropus balfouri) was first discovered on the Socotra Island off of Yemen. These terrestrial tarantulas are typically found on mountains at 850m above sea level, but can also be observed on coastal plains.

Though they are more likely to flee if agitated, this species is described as being skittish and defensive, and can bite if they feel threatened enough. It isn’t uncommon for these tarantulas to display their characteristic threat posture by rearing up on their back legs to display their fangs.

Unlike some tarantula species where handling is acceptable in certain scenarios, it is not recommended to handle Socotra Island Blue Baboons due to their speed and defensive nature. As this species is an old world species, they do not have urticating hairs (hairs on the abdomen that are flicked at predators and cause irritation) however their venom is more potent than new world tarantulas.

Although handling isn’t recommended, Socotra Island Baboon Tarantulas are rather striking to look at, with flashes of blue across the legs. The individual available is Captive Bred.

Something a little different for the invert lovers in your life!

Here we have a CB Giraffe Mantis (Euchomenella heteroptera). This relatively large species of mantis is native to Borneo, Vietnam and Malaysia. Their slender appearance sets them apart from other mantises, and their passive nature makes this unusual species a lovely addition or starter for a collection. Giraffe mantises are ambush predators, staying motionless until they have the perfect opportunity to strike for their food.
