BEREAVEMENT, GRIEF and MOURNING: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Sadly, loss is a universally-experienced life event. Pet loss, however, is something only experienced by those of us who choose to live with or care for an animal.

Bereavement, grief and mourning are all common terms that we use to describe the feelings and behaviours associated with loss, whatever its nature.

People often talk about each as if they’re interchangeable. However, there are some key differences – especially between grief and mourning – that are particularly relevant to bereaved pet carers.

Let’s look at what these terms mean and why the differences matter.

“We didn’t know you were here”.

A phrase we hear most days, but Forget Me Nott have been supporting owners and caring for their pets since 2009. Admittedly, our location can seem a little off the beaten track, but we are accessible via the A609 main road in Trowell, linking Ilkeston and Wollaton, so not that far away. Located in tranquil green belt area with fields all around us, and Wollaton Hall easily seen from our drive.

“If you didn’t need us, you wouldn’t need to know where we are” - that is our reply. It’s not a conversation you have with your family, friends, fellow pet owners or your vet until ‘that time comes’. But it doesn't have to be like that.

We are always happy to spend time with pet owners who may need our services in the future and want to get a feel for us, our business and what we can offer before they are having to say goodbye to a beloved pet; it’s being practical and proactive to know what you want for your pet when you are having to let them go.

We call it - “Meet us before you need us”.

That way you can be objective and clear on how we can help and support you, before you are in the upset state of ‘that time’ already being upon you.

So, get in touch with us to be prepared and have peace of mind where you pet is going to take its final journey from and who will be caring from them – it’s the least they deserve – and you too.

Nothing you love is lost. Not really. Things, people—they always go away, sooner or later. You can’t hold them, any more than you can hold moonlight. But if they’ve touched you, if they’re inside you, then they’re still yours. The only things you ever really have are the ones you hold inside your heart. ~Bruce Coville

LESSONS IN PET LOSS GRIEF

Before you experienced pet loss grief for the first time, it was probably something you hadn’t thought about much.

Why would you?

No-one wants to think about how a relationship will end when it’s in full swing.

When you bring a pet into your home, there’s the first rush of love and excitement – the getting to know you phase – before you settle into the rhythms and routines of everyday life.

Then, one day, pet loss and grief take centre stage, either completely out of the blue or as a slow, creeping presence that you realise is edging nearer.

However it comes, your bereavement can turn your world upside down.

* * * * * * *

Reflecting on what we have learned about pet loss grief, forty-five things came to mind. The ones that resonate the most with us are:

- 3. Everyone grieves differently – there is no right or wrong way
- 6. There is no such thing as closure, only time and a gradual acceptance
- 7. Grief has no timeline – you can’t rush it or ignore it and, in some way, it will stay with you forever
- 12. Guilt is a common emotion to feel when you’re grieving
- 20. “Why?” and “What if?” are impossible questions to answer – the secret is to find a way to accept not knowing (“If only” won’t help you either)
- 23. Not everyone understands how much losing an animal friend can hurt but there are some wonderful people who do
- 25. Life after euthanasia can be full of conflicting emotions – you’re not alone
- 28. Some people feel they want a new pet in their life straight away while others don’t feel ready for some time (if ever) – there are still ways to spend time with animals
- 39. You can’t compare grief or losses, even though people will try as a means to comfort you
- 43. Life will never go back to how it was before your loss but you will find a new ‘normal’

The sunbeam falls on an empty chair,
A lingering warmth, a ghost of hair.
No playful leaps, no gentle sighs,
Just a quiet space in tearful eyes.

A loyal friend, a furry guide,
Through walks and cuddles, by your side.
A wagging tail, a joyful bark,
Forever etched upon your heart.

Though paws may rest, and fur may fade,
The love remains, a bond unswayed.
In memory's field, they'll always play,
Your furry friend, each and every day.

NINE PET LOSS MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS

Pet loss grief is often subject to some common myths and misconceptions. These myths don’t help anyone, least of all the bereaved person.

In this blog, we wanted to take a look at some of the biggest pet loss grief myths and why you need to give yourself permission to ignore them.

1. Pet loss is less painful and less significant than losing a human loved one.
2. Pet loss grief devalues human life and human relationships.
3. People who grieve intensely for a pet must have a problem connecting with other people.
4. The death of a pet is like a ‘dress rehearsal’ for grief.
5. It’s eccentric or frivolous to spend money on a funeral or memorial for a pet.
6. There are five stages of grief.
7. It’s best to get a new pet as quickly as possible.
8. Grief will end.
9. You should only hold on to pleasant memories of your pet.

Did you know that we are available on weekends and out of hours?

❤️ 💙 💜 🐾 🌈

At Paws at Peace we are available to contact 24/7. Where possible, we provide 24 hour appointment service, and where not possible we offer the next soonest appointment or provide you with other contacts who may be able to help sooner.

We know how important it is to have that weekend and out of hours availability,

❤️ Firstly, we know that pets don't only get ill during working hours. We will always respond to your call, and organise the soonest possible appointment for those patients where urgent attention is needed.

💙 Secondly, we know it is sometimes easier for owners to say goodbye on an evening or weekend. Giving them time to gather the family, or allowing them time to grieve before going back to work on Monday.

🕊 We can still arrange cremation and provide aftercare as normal both out of hours and on weekends.

☎️ visit our website https://www.pawsatpeaceeastmidlands.co.uk
for more information including prices.
Or call us on 07551026086 to speak to a team member. If we are performing a visit at the time of your call, we will not answer immediately but will ring you back within an hour, please feel free to leave a message or text us.

HOW LONG DOES PET LOSS GRIEF LAST? UNDERSTANDING THE ENDLESS JOURNEY...

How long does pet loss grief last? If you’ve experienced a bereavement, you may be asking yourself this question a lot, wanting to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This question has no straightforward answer because grief is, in many ways, an everlasting presence in our lives. Why? Because it’s a manifestation of love, and if love can never truly die, then neither can grief.

We can reassure you though that pet loss grief eventually becomes manageable.

It changes, ebbs and flows, and sometimes it’s more intense than at other times. But, with time, you will be able to enter the next stage in your life and experience happiness and good things once again.

In this blog, we explore the enduring nature of grief, its manifestations, and the signs of incomplete grief to be aware of.

“When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are.
It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us.
It means that if we meet again, you will know me. It means that even after I die, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.
For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.”

Frederick Buechner - Whistling in the Dark, 1988.
