Back in December, we had 5 very unwell kittens brought in to the practice and working alongside the Cats Protection, have managed to nurse them back to health.

One of the kittens, a girl named Pixie, was the smallest and weighed only 385g when she was first seen at the practice. Unfortunately, Pixie had a ruptured eye which needed to be removed without delay. This was a risky operation for such a tiny, unwell kitten but she was tough and pulled through. She really is a little miracle.

The kittens visited the practice a lot during their first 3 weeks of care and as a veterinary team, it has been such a heart-warming case to watch each individual kitten grow and become stronger every time they have been seen.

All kittens now have new homes lined up and this week, Pixie came back to see us to be spayed and have a minor operation on the socket of where her eye was enucleated.

As you can see from the photo, Pixie is quite at home with us and was very well behaved, especially after all she has been through.

During an operation to remove a stone from a dog's digestive tract (that's a story for another time!) our Vet, Gina, found an unwelcome tag-along- a 🪱Roundworm🪱. Roundworms live in the intestinal tract and feed on partially digested food. They reproduce by laying eggs which travel out alongside the dog's faeces. They can reach several inches long, this one was around 10cm!
Symptoms that you dog or cat may have worms include:Weight lossIncreased appetiteItchy bottomWeaknessDull, dry coatVomitingDiarrhoeaConstipation
Regular de-worming with a product such as Milbevet will kill adult worms, including roundworm, in your dog's system, we recommend you do this at least every 3 months.

Lovely Cyril the Guinea Pig🐹 came into see us today to have a lump removed. Unlike Cats and Dogs, it's really important to make sure that small mammals are kept eating up until and just after their anaesthetic. Cyril is making a great recovery and is looking very snazzy in his makeshift bodysuit!

As any avid Harry Potter fan will tell you, “Merlin’s beard!” is a popular exclamation often used in the wizarding world to express one’s astonishment and shock. So, it won’t surprise you to hear that when Merlin, a very handsome Maine C**n cat belonging to some dearly-loved long-standing clients of ours, came to visit us recently, and we found his “beard” residing in his stomach……. that’s exactly what we said!

Merlin had actually shown his owners no outward signs of a problem. However, at routine examination, our vet, Gina, could feel something out of the ordinary in his tummy. A blood sample and ultrasound scan later, we identified what medical Muggles would call a ‘trichobezoar’…… or a giant hairball to the rest of us……. that was all but filling his stomach. Being the tough little cookie he is, Merlin had soldiered on admirably.

A couple of days later, Merlin underwent surgery to remove the hair from his stomach. The concern was that, if left, it may eventually lead to an obstruction of his stomach or intestines, which he had so far been very lucky to avoid.

He has since made a brilliant recovery, becoming a bit of a star when visiting Highertown sporting his bright pink recovery suit. It is only now that he is fighting fit once more that his owners say they can appreciate he perhaps wasn’t quite on form before.

It just goes to show how important those routine checks are- you never know what's lurking! 🐱🌟
