*** LENGTH OF SCHOOLING SESSIONS ***

Following my post from this morning, about Johnnie only working for 15 minutes, as he worked so well, I thought I’d give my opinion on how long horses should be worked for. This is my opinion. It is based on both my experience and understanding as a rider and horsewoman, and my knowledge as an equine vet with 12 years’ experience.

My horses are never, ever, schooled for longer than 30 minutes. This is more than enough time to achieve something, and if you haven’t achieved your goal after 30 minutes, it’s unlikely that you will by plugging on for longer. This 30 minutes includes my warm up, and a couple of short walk breaks.

I haven’t really had lessons for many years, but when I trained with Jennie Loriston-Clarke, and then more recently with Olly Barrs, their lesson times are 40 minutes. This includes warming up and warming down. Frequently, they wouldn’t go on past 30 minutes. Horses learn by repetition, not by grilling them for an hour at a time.

Horses also break easily. They damage ligaments and tendons. Yes, this is often unlucky and frequently caused by a sudden twist in the field. But it’s also frequently caused by too much schooling, especially if the surface is deep, or uneven. Proximal suspensory ligaments are not designed to take the weight of a horse in collected work for hours. Once a PSL is damaged, you are often looking at a lengthy rehab, or surgery to cut the nerve that supplies it (neurectomy). That is not to say that every horse with PSD has been overworked, before I offend anyone!

Horses break more easily when they are tired. A tired horse is more likely to trip, possibly resulting in ligament or tendon damage. Muscle needs some degree of fatigue to condition it, but not to the point of exhaustion.

A horse’s brain also breaks easily. Fatigue can also be mental. Granted, some horses’ brains don’t take much to break, but if a horse becomes stressed or can’t work out what you are asking him that day, then take a 24 hour break, and go for a hack, or just lunge the next day. Or give him a day off.

Most horses will be fit enough for their job, without being ridden 6 days a week. The main issue with lower level competition horses, is that many are fat. Exercise is a great way to get horses to lose weight, true, but not without reducing the amount of grass or hard feed they are receiving. Schooling a fat horse for an hour, will cause joint, tendon, and ligament problems in the long term. Find hills to slowly jog them up, or even walk them up, if you are wanting to exercise more to help with fitness and/or weight loss. Don’t school them more. Trotting endlessly around a flat arena isn’t really going to help with fitness.

If you are going to school, then add plenty of variety. Make sure the horse is working from behind, and not dragging himself along on his forehand. If you don’t enjoy schooling, you will be more inclined to switch off and trot endless 20m circles. So go for a hack first, and then just do ten minutes of intense schooling when you get home. That will keep both human and horse brains fresh!

This is an enormous topic, and it would take me days to cover it all, so this is really a brief summary. Keep schooling sessions short and productive, and if the session is going wrong, take a break!

Little update on the Household Cavalry Horses who were injured on 24th April this year after they got spooked and ran through London.

Three of the injured horses are now back at work and are looking to be working at the King’s birthday parade 🐴

Two horses Quaker and Vida are enjoying some R&R in the countryside and will return to work soon 🐴

So lovely to see them doing so well after the devastating sights we saw and the injuries caused. A massive thankyou to the horse trust who have supported them in their rehabilitation 🙌

I am definitely a 4 today. Chloe says she is a 6. What are you? 😂

Always worth checking on a regular basis. If your stirrups are uneven then you will be too in the saddle. This will create uneven pressure through your horse’s back and mean you get to see me more often! 😂

Top Tip Tuesday

I have said this before, and I will say it again... and again... and again... because it's so darn important AND it's so darn common!

🤓Check. Your. Leathers. 🤓

⭐️Don't check they're on the same number hole (these ones are!).
⭐️Don't presume because they're fairly new that they're ok (these ones were pretty new).
⭐️And don't think it's not important... because it IS.

Even the smallest amount of difference makes a HUGE difference to your horse.
Imagine you were giving someone a piggy 🐷 back, and they hung off one side, even just a little bit.... how much you'd have to brace and compensate for them being uneven.
🦄Think about your horse, as you ask for canter... you're expecting him to lift his inside limbs up to make a nice transition... that's a million times harder if you're hanging off that side - even if it's only by a few mm.
👇🏽
The best way to check them? Take them off the saddle, put your feet in the stirrups and check to see if the buckles are level... just like I am doing in this photo!
👇🏽
What can you do to help keep them even?
👌🏽Use a mounting block, don't mount from the ground.
👌🏽Make sure you ride evenly. If you mainly hack, change diagonals in trot regularly and change legs in canter, so you ride each 'side' evenly.
👌🏽Plus... swap them over (left to right, right to left) every time you clean your tack.

⭐️And, consider getting a really decent pair of non-stretch leathers. ⭐️

With horses spending more time in stables or out in this damp wet weather is it time to invest in some magnetic bands to help support their joints and circulatory system?

They are £35 a pair.

I am a stockist for and here is why using magnetic products on your horse could boost his health and wellbeing?

Magnetic therapy (MT) is natural and non-invasive, but it’s important to note that the magnets themselves don’t heal, they are thought to help support the right environment for the body to heal itself.
Magnets are believed to do this by supporting increased blood flow to the areas below them. The blood flow brings increased oxygen levels, helps remove waste products and aids a reduction in inflammation.

MT is also used for a range of conditions, including stiff joints and muscles, after strenuous work and also for general relaxation.
MT may help to increase the rate of healing when treating inflammation, swelling and the symptoms of arthritis.

Using MT can also help your horse recover more quickly from injury or a chronic condition.
Magnets are now integrated into a range of products — rugs, boots and wraps — and each will contain a number of magnets that are positioned over key areas of the body. These make using MT as part of your daily routine with your horse quick and easy.

When using magnets on your horse, a magnetic field is generated by the magnets when it comes into contact with your horse’s body. This magnetic field penetrates through your horse’s muscle and soft tissue, and cellular activity is increased.

However, there is very little scientific evidence on exactly how magnets work to back up these claims. There is, though, plenty of anecdotal evidence that magnetic therapy can be helpful, and there are many horse owners who have seen the benefits of using MT on their horses.

Magnetic therapy can be incorporated into your horse’s daily routine and is thought to play a role in:
❤️ Helping warm muscles up before and after work
❤️ Relieving tension and aid relaxation
❤️ Easing general stiffness
❤️ Reducing swelling
❤️ Boosting general well-being
❤️ Supporting the body to heal

Please note: magnetic therapy is thought to have a useful role in the daily care of your horse, you should always seek the advice of a qualified vet in the event that your horse is unwell or unsound.
