I really like how this post explains the importance of having a dog walker to help your dogs to be themselves.

Even the most loving and caring pet parents still have busy lives. It has become the way we live as a society now.

Good dog walker would make yours and your dog's life a little easier

If you are looking to treat yourself and your dog to a dog walker, feel free to contact us. Mid morning slots are still available

Recently I read "If you have a dog walker, you shouldn't have a dog."

This is my boy, he has a dog walker 2 days a week, on my busiest days. The days when I'm too wiped out to offer him the decent romp in lovely natural environments that he deserves.

'Dog walker' is such an understated title.

These guys are the bridge between the modern reality our dogs have been thrust into, that's so at odds with their genetics.

The vast majority of dogs were not born to be content with 15 minute pavement walks, but you need to work to pay the bills. I get it.

Did you know behaviour problems rarely occur in nature?

Our dogs are captive animals.

Sit with that one as long as you need.

They were not designed for sofa snoozing and short restrictive walks on a tight lead on paved ground.

When behaviour problems occur in captive zoo animals, we recognise it as the wrong environment for these animals to thrive....

In dogs, we just shoot for compliance and slap on a lazy excuse like 'dominance' or 'stubborn'.

Good dog walkers are a modern day gift to our dogs, and if you use one, you are an ace guardian who chooses to recognise the innate needs of your dog, and respect them for who they are.

You're not a lazy guardian; you're an enlightened one.

Huge high five to all the dog walkers out there, including my own Paw Legged Friends Dog Walking and Pet Sitting Wakefield - thank you for making our restrictive, modern world a better place for our four legged friends 💛

On a hot day like today, we chose to focus on mental enrichment and training over walking and strenous exercise. It tires the dog beutifully and it aids his learning progress in the future. And the "middle" cue is such an important one to teach any dog.

TIPS FOR DOG LOVERS DURING HOT DAYS

We all love the long and sunny summer days. And despite the England's notorious reputation of rainy country we all hope to get as many of them as we can. And this year we seem to be particulary lucky with the weather so far. Summer has started with a bang and we are already enjoying the sun at it's best.

However this lovely sunny weather can pose a risk to our four legged friends. Dogs don't proces the heat the same way humans do. They sweat only through their paws rather than their whole body and their main way of cooling down is through their mouth known as panting.

Due to their limited ability to effectively cool down in hot weather, our furry friends are exposed to a risk of overheating much easier than humans do. This could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke and the severity of symptoms may vary from mild to very serious and in some cases it can even result in death.

It is our job as their human guardians to watch out and take precausions to prevent them from becoming uncomfortable or at risk during those hot days of summer.

There is a vast array of signs and symptoms to look out for

- excesive panting or difficulty panting or breathing.
- excesive drooling
- temperature above 39.4°C (38.3°C to 39.1°C is normal for most dogs)
- dry sticky gums
- tiredness, drowsiness, lethargy
- difficulty to mainain balance
- difficullty getting up
- collapsing
- Change of gum colour to bright red

Are just a few of the main and most noticeable ones

Some dog breeds are at even higher risk due to their breed characteristics. Short nosed breeds like pugs, buldogs, caviliers have harder time to regulate their temperature through panting due to the compromised breathing caused by the shape of their skull. Dogs with short noses have less surfacearea to distribute heatloss.

The small breeds are closer to the ground which means they are more exposed to the heat radiating from the surfaces they walk on. The difference in temperature could be over 20°C comparing grass vs pavement.
However whilst saying that, the large breeds or overweight dogs tend to in general overheat faster than smaller breads.

The black or dark coloured dogs might overheat faster than lighter coloured dog

Another factor playing role in how fast your dog might overheat is age. Elderly dogs and young puppies are more likely to overheat.
And also activity level contributes to the risk.

To make their life easier during in this season we can follow few simple rules.

- if possible walk your dog earlier in the morning before it gets too hot or in the evening when the temperatures started to drop to more comfortable levels

- avoid long strenghtuos exercise during the hottest period of the day. Even the most energetic breeds might be better of with a quick potty break and a session of mental enrichment at the comfort of your home over a run or exuberant play session in the full sun.

We all know not to leave our dogs in cars which can overheat extremely quickly even if the window is partially open
However even dogs that are kept outside might be at risk too. Do not leave your dog unattended in the garden for a long periods of time. Especially if there isn't a sufficient shade area.
Please keep in mind that dog house is often not suitable as a shade as they can acumulate heat if they are in direct sunlight.

Prevention is better than cure and it is especially true when it comes to dealing with pets during hot days, however sometimes even the best effort cannot guarantee that your pet won't overheat.

Keeping a close eye on your dog and spotting signs of disconfort early can prevent the situation from getting worse.

If you spot any signs that your dog is becoming overheated, take immediate action!

- make sure your dog has constant acces to clean water. Have a water bottle with you on walks
- remove your dog from direct sunlight
- put damp towel down and encourage your dog to lie on it but do not cover him or wrap him in the towel
- spray your dog with cool water (make sure the water is cool but not freezing as this can cause a shock)
- keep paddling pool in a shaded area of your garden for your dog to splash in and encourage your dog into it
- offer frozen food for your dog to lick
- place bottle full of cool water next to your dog

If you are suspecting that your dog has overheated, consult your vet immediately whilst colling your dog down. Early intervention can reduce the risk of serious damage to your pet's health or even a death so don't wait until you get to your vet.

Keep the tails wagging and enjoy the sunshine safely

Be cautious of the heat!!!

Our furry friends can't sweat the way we do. Their only way to cool off other than getting in the water is sweating through their paws and panting.

Walk your dogs in early morning or in the evening once the temperatures have dropped to avoid serious health risks for your furry best friend.

Also be mindfull of the hot tarmac. If you can't hold the back of your hand on the road for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws!

Keep safe and hydrated everyone 🐾

Do not take your dog for a walk today in the heatwave!
There you go. Simple advice. It’s too hot.
No dog ever died from not going for a walk for one day.

Today we we've finally managed to take Roly for a short car ride and make it pleasant for him.
Over the past few weeks we have maged to build enough value and positive experiences inside the car and now we can build on it on short drives and continue to get him more and more confident and comfortable. Yet another win for everyone.

Just a few short weeks back Roly would not come anywhere near this car even when it was all closed and lifeless.
Now he is happily jumping in and out and having fun in the process. We still have a long way to go before he can relax and enjoy the car rides comfortably but this right here is massive step forward and we are so proud of him.

Meet Deco, one of the smartest dogs we have ever met. We had the pleasure to look after her when we were in Mexico. Her favourite toy was a coconut. Playing with Deco and her coconut was both great cardio and strength training in one. Luckily she gave us a break from time to time and settled for a football 🤣🥥

We have had some pretty remarkable experiences with our canine friends.
This photo is one of our fond memories of pet sitting in Belize. Doggies needed to be taken to the vets for their boosters but they lived on an island. I must admit that it was a first for us keeping 3 rambunctious adolescents calm on a small boat. But as you can see they aced it 👍😍
