Part 1 - How Barney the Border and I started our traffic adventure.

We literally sat and watched traffic. We took ourselves off to some of the smaller local roads and watched. When Barney showed calm and relaxed behaviour, he was rewarded with a high value treat or praise using his marker word ‘Good’.

This was our starting point which we have done over a period, moving around to various locations so Barney gets more comfortable with low level traffic. With the aim to slowly build him up to be more confident with main roads and larger vehicles.

When starting this adventure I considered the following:

Time ⏰– Making sure I had 10 minutes to work on this daily

Consistency and repetition 👍🏻 - Starting with the same task and building on it

Patience 😀 – If I am stressed it will feed into your dog and affect the outcome

Perseverance 💪🏻 - even if things don’t go plan and trust me, they won’t, keep going. Take it from the start and slowly build it back up again.

Remember life is busy, things get in the way of best intentions, I know that all too well. We have to start somewhere and starting is the hardest part. My advice keep going, if you are not getting the behaviour you want take a step back and work on that until you can move onto the next step.

You’ve got this Barney 💪🏻

Barney is my 3-year-old Border Terrier. Barney has developed a fear of traffic.

At around 18 months Barney started to become fearful of traffic. Things that can cause this are not enough exposure to this situation in his early puppy socialisation, a general fear/anxiety or an incident occurred which triggered the start of this behaviour.

It can be common for adolescent dogs to regress with their training and things they were never fearful of can develop.

It is slow progress with Barney, over a period I have been working with him to understand his fear more, it was hard to pinpoint.

This is a clip of Barney walking around our local roads. You can see he is interested in the traffic, and I think he would bark if I wasn’t reassuring him and telling him he is ‘good’ in this state of calm and nice walking.

We aren’t quite a success story yet….as main roads with larger vehicles are an issue, he does still lunge and bark but not all the time. Mastering the quieter roads is our goal and slowly building it up.

I will post another clip on how we started our journey and things to consider. This isn’t fool proof, but it is a start, and we always need to start somewhere.

Come on Barney you have got this 💪🏻

The Fundamentals of Health and Behaviour loading….

I love my course it is one of the best things I have ever put my mind to. However, I am only human and over the last few months, I have found it a challenge to focus. I have had this overwhelming sense that there is too much life admin to do. Now that Christmas and various other bits are out of the way and a bit of break from work I feel more determined than ever.

I look back at what I have achieved since I started my CIDBT journey back in April 2024. I have passed all my modules, I am now a qualified dog trainer, I help run fun agility with my colleague, which I love, while providing a dog walking and pet sitting service to my regular Paws for Walk clients. Oh, and the added extra of mum to a 9-year-old and dog mum to my 3-year-old barking Border Terrier Barney (but we don’t talk about the barking bit).

So, I see you 2025 and I coming for you 💪🏻

Barney and I wish all our wonderful clients and followers a VERY Happy Christmas and New Year 🌲💙🌲💗
