Its national take your cat to the vet day 🩺

We know most cats don't like visiting us 👀
Here are some helpful tips to try and make their visit less stressful.

- cover their carrier with a towel
- cool the car down prior to taking them
- spray anti-stress/ anxiety pheromones
- we provide cat stands at all our surgeries (please use them as our feline friends like to be up high away from predators)
- leave the cat carrier out so it becomes a part of the furniture, make the carrier as comfortable as possible, using blankets, items of your clothing etc
- never travel with your cat loose in the car
- secure the basket in the car using a seat belt to prevent moving around
- keep the carrier as still as possible while walking into the practice to prevent rattling

Culverden Vets – Proudly Independent since 1946

We can’t help but notice that there has been some discussion on various social media platforms recently regarding the differences between an independently owned veterinary practice and a corporate-owned practice. So we thought that we would help to inform our curious followers!

Independent practices are owned by a single or group of individuals, corporate organisations tend to own multiple practices either regionally or nationwide. In the case of Culverden Vets, we are owned by 4 veterinary surgeons who all work as practicing vets daily at our 3 branches (Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough and Wadhurst). We believe that this is the best model for your pets, our clients and our staff.

We can re-assure you that despite many practices moving to the corporate market, we fully intend to remain an independently owned business.

Congratulations to one of Tunbridge Wells Superstars Humphrey who qualified from his puppy party today!

Humphrey is a 12 week old Scottish Terrier full of personailty and I think we can all agree he is very photogenic!

Humphrey attended 3 weeks worth of classes run every thursday by RVN Emma who thoroughly enjoyed having him in the class.

She would also like to congratulate his fellow classmates Blu, Bella and Rosie who all also attended and qualified alongside him

It's that time of year again - adders will be basking in the sunshine, particularly around the Ashdown Forest area. Take care when walking near ponds with banks or in woodland areas.

What to do if your dog is bitten by an adder?

- Carry them, do not let them walk as this will circulate the venom around the body.
- Keep them as calm as possible as you take them to the nearest vet in the area.
- You can bathe the wound in cold water to help with the swelling, but do not attempt any other first aid

Hot weather tip:

Please do not walk your pets on hot pavements.

Canines use their paws to sweat, by walking on hot pavements you are preventing the bodies natural way of cooling down.

This could lead to burnt paws and the possibility of heat stroke.

Please take care when walking your animals, we recommend walking at dusk and dawn when the day is at its coolest.

🥵🥵Summer is here! Culverden vets recommend watching out for heatstroke🥵🥵
Signs animals can present with:

•excessive panting that gets worse and noisier.
•excessive drooling and some pets vomiting or diarrhoea.
•pacing and unable to get cool and agitated.
Severe cases can collapse and have seizures.

What to do if your dog has heat stroke?
1 Immerse your dog in water/shower off with cold water (don’t use wet towels they can trap heat)
2 use a fan/aircon to help disperse heat.
3 ring your vet.

Grass seeds are more abundant this time of year.

Helpful tips:
•try to avoid areas where you can see grass seeds growing
•make sure your dog is well groomed so you can spot anything lodged in their fur
•check your dog carefully after each walk particularly hairy dogs between and under their toes.

Contact your vet if you suspect that your dog may be suffering from a grass seed injury.

🐰☀️Summer issues to watch out for rabbits 🐰 ☀️

At Culverden vets we would like to encourage you to watch out for fly strike.

Here is some helpful tips:

•Check your rabbit’s back end twice a day.
•Watch out for a lack of energy or appetite.
•Pay special attention to older or arthritic or rabbits with dental disease.
•Ensure your rabbits and bedding is clean at all time.

You can discuss this and a preventative rabbit specific fly strike medication with your vet/nurse.

If your rabbit is showing signs of fly strike take them to your vet immediately.

☀️🌳The sun is out, gardens are blooming and pollen is in the air. Watch out for itching.

This time of year dogs can show signs of skin allergies. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis. It can be seasonal or all year round, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life.

Chat to your vet today if your pet has an itch that won’t be solved with a scratch.

🕷️🐕‍Tick season alert🕷️🐈

Culverden’s Vets are warning clients to pay extra attention for ticks.
Given the wet spring and mild winter we have had there have been an unprecedented amount of ticks seen so far this year.

This will only increase as the weather gets warmer so monitor your pet. If you’d like to discuss preventative measures for your pet chat to your vet/nurse today.

🐾🐾Monster Puppies!!!🐾🐾
We’ve had a lot of puppies in Culverden Vets this week but I think these 2 win the biggest licks and paws award so far Bertie & Ragnar. I’m not sure if Phil one of our vets will be still able to carry them in 6months time!! Given he is 6 foot 8 they make him look normal sized.
