I came to 'Barefoot' through my remarkable mare Desejada. She came from Portugal with a tentative diagnosis of "Navicular syndrome". There had been periods of soundness interspersed with acute lameness. Our skilled farrier did everything he could but the situation did not improve and we were beginning to think that maybe 'Dr. Green' was the answer; take off the shoes and turn her out for a few mon

ths to let her feet settle down before bringing her back into work.We researched on the internet and found the UKNHCP website. The next step was to buy "Feet First" to learn how to successfully transition from shod to barefoot. We changed our horses diets then a couple of months later we contacted a UKNHCP trimmer. From the moment her shoes came off we knew it was right. It was so different to when we had tried to do the same for our cob and ease his arthritis. He hated it and was always sensitive but back then we knew nothing of the importance of correct diet & exercise for barefoot horses. The periods of soundness quickly became longer, her recovery from soreness was much quicker but she was still subject to intermittent lameness. Following an MRI scan at Leahurst Equine Unit an unresolved chip fracture of the pedal bone was diagnosed, probably done as a foal and too deep to operate. The vets at Leahurst gave a very guarded prognosis. It was felt that she would never be able to tolerate fast work and would always need painkillers. Now with her feet having been allowed to develop naturally, we are able to trot, canter & gallop without any spells of lameness. Barefoot hoofcare has proved itself to me beyond doubt. We also took our other mare, Melody's, shoes off and watched in amazement as the damage from previous laminitis began to correct. I was maintaining them between trims so decided to train with the UKNHCP. My horses are living proof of the benefits of a barefoot regime and I am really enjoying using my training to help my customers. In addition to trimming I am also a Reiki healer. This helps me to establish a calming atmosphere really appreciated by the horses. I will be happy to advise on diet, exercise and care for your horses' feet. If you have any questions or require any further information about taking and keeping your horse barefoot please feel free to contact me. If I cannot cover your area I will do my best to find you another UKNHCP Practitioner who can help you. I can be contacted by Email at: [email protected]

Most of our clients will know that we are both Reiki Masters. Since the beginning of Barely Roadworthy, we have concentrated on hoof trimming but there has always been a little sparkle and healing sprinkled accross our visits πŸ˜‰
Now we would like to offer Reiki only sessions for horses and owners. We can work anywhere that is peaceful and quiet. Horses will let us know how much or how little they feel open to so sessions can last from a few minutes to half an hour or more, typically they may fidget as they get used to the sensation then relax, maybe yawn, stretch etc .
As there are two of us owners can have a healing session at the same time or just choose to quietly watch their horse.
Mostly we will book these sessions separately from trimming as we would like horses to be able to completely relax and enjoy the experience.
Reiki is the art of offering healing energy to a being or situation. The giver cannot direct the outcome and won't use their own energy. The recipient will use the healing in it's own way. All healing is offered for the greater good.
We are both really excited to start on this next phase of our work and bring more of this gentle, caring help to a world that is badly in need of it right now πŸ™

Today this beautiful lady left us. She was around 26 but strong, vital and totally "Desi". Sadly an aggressive tumour finally beat her. There was nothing anyone could do. Some of you who have met her know how truly special this girl is. Every horse John has been able to help owes her their thanks. Without her need to heal barefoot John would never have trained to trim and our whole lives may have been completely different. To ride her was a privilege. Fiery and proud but always safe. That spirit never left her.
Our thanks to Illana and Will for trusting her future to us after rescuing her in Portugal. Desi walked off the lorry and decided to run our lives from then on. Her herd are devastated. They never had to decide when to eat, doze or where it was best to do so. We just cannot believe she has gone. Special thanks to Sue and Becci for their messages from her so there was no doubt that it was her time. Goodnight girl, until we see you again πŸ’”

So TBs have bad feet, weak, flat and unable to cope without shoes. Tell that to this girl who came out of shoes last year. You can't really appreciate the concavity but it is there. This winter has been horribly wet too.
I just had to take a picture or two yesterday. One of many we have the pleasure to work with.

We wish 2024 will be kinder to everyone than 2023. Happy holidays and we will see you on the other side of all the frivolity 🀩
