Many of you will know Lindsay Brazil who has been a Partner at Cheltenham Equine Vets since it came into being nine years ago.  Since then, she has worked tirelessly with Emma to grow the business, often being tasked with the mundane administrative elements which are so necessary in keeping the business on the right path.

Along side this she has also run her own Equine and Canine acupuncture business, which unsurprisingly is incredibly successful.  Cheltenham Equine is now established at the Twigworth office with a strong team of vets and support staff, leaving Lindsay able to step back (although not entirely away) from us.

You will also know Anna Gorman, who has been with us for eight years now, and we are sure you will agree she is an amazing vet.  We are delighted to say that she now joins Emma as a Partner, leading the team into the next exciting phase at the Practice.

As a client, there will be no alterations in the way the Practice operates or the service you will receive, but we hope you will all join us in wishing Lindsay all the best for her future endeavours and congratulating Anna on her new role here.

The announcement of this news to the team coincided with delivery of some of the best cake from one of our lovely clients! 😍

EHV - there has been a reported case of the neurological variant of EHV-1 in Gloucestershire. This is thankfully a very rare strain of a more common virus that usually causes respiratory signs in younger horses/ponies or abortion in pregnant mares (EHV-1 & EHV-4).
There is unfortunately no registered vaccination for the neurological variant of the virus, but there is a vaccination that can help prevent the spread and reduce the severity of the other forms of EHV-1&4. We recommend the routine vaccination of pregnant mares, stud populations and those regularly out mixing/competing (e.g. stay away shows) in close quarters with other horses 🐎
Ensuring yards have suitable isolation protocols for new horses arriving, good general hygiene and the appropriate diagnosis/management of any cases is paramount 🦠
If you’d like any further advice regarding EHV please do not hesitate to contact the practice on 01242 806772 or alternatively visit the BHS website 👇🏻

We were really happy to receive this 5 star 🌟 review this morning. Thanks so much for your kind words 🤩

"My horse was scoped for ulcers yesterday by Becky and Jo. She had a very traumatic experience 5 years prior with a massive bleed. They were in contact with me beforehand with lots of advice and support.
It's been an awful time at the yard as we lost two horses in two days and as a new owner I was obviously very anxious.
As well as being so professional, the kindness and care they showed to both horse and owner went above and beyond. My horse was kept calm and stress free.
Thankfully no ulcers found, but a plan has been put in place to identify issues with her abdomen. They looked at my feeding regime and helped me make sure the measurements were correct.
I am so glad she is under the care of Cheltenham Equine. Thank you so much. "

Another of our exciting cases recently is Mouse.
Mouse has been seen by us regularly every three months for flushing of her diastemas and has always been an excellent patient. But recently those gaps have become a little too sore for her to cope with. Therefore, we opted to change her treatment plan.

We used the oroscope to have a really good look at her teeth and the diastemas in question. In her case we identified 4 sites that would benefit from widening. We used a special burr that helps us get into those really small spaces and using the oroscope for guidance we were able to widen the gap. Mouse will be rechecked and have a little more work in 6 weeks. But a recently update from her lovely owner has been very positive and Mouse is starting to eat hay much happier again now.

Diastemas are gaps that have formed between the horse's teeth. Sometimes they can become impacted with food material and upset the nearby gums, causing discomfort for the horses. Usually with frequent flushing and good dental management we can help reduce these gaps. However sometimes they need a little help, the widened gap allows the food to move in and out of the space easier and reduces the chance of it getting trapped. This is all part of the importance of regular dental checks.

We have been a little quiet recently as we have been up to some exciting things.

Meet our 3 unsuspecting patients of the week who were booked in for castration.

Now those pesky flies have gone it is a great time to start thinking about castrating your colts. As a practice we have the option of performing castrations under either standing or general anaesthesia on your yard. Methods vary depending on the patient. With two of these guys, we opted for a GA due to their small stature, nervousness and safer access to the testicles.

Castrations are not without their risks; we are happy to discuss options and concerns with you if you are looking to book with us.

The lucky third one has got away with a sight delay in castrations dates due to having only one descended testicle. But he provided excellent emotional support for his friends and will be reassessed in springtime.

Today we went out to see this handsome boy Guinness to assess him as he has recently developed a cough. This coincided with him starting to be brought in more due to the colder weather, and being in a dustier environment. We did a clinical exam, including listening to his heart, lungs and taking a temperature. This helps us to prioritise a list of potential causes for his cough. In Guiness’ case, the most likely cause, based on his history and clinical signs, is a flare up of asthma, caused by a change in his routine and environment.

This is a common issue, and some management changes that we would advise in cases like this include:
- Using dust-free bedding
- Soaking hay or feeding haylage
- Feeding from the ground
- Turning out as much as possible
- Ensuring good ventilation when stabled

There are various treatment options or further diagnostics available based on what the vet finds. If your horse is experiencing similar issues to Guinness, get in touch and one of our vets will be happy to help!
