Training continues for the big move 🦏 🚛

Just how do you move a rhino to another zoo? Its not like you can pop him in the back of your car like your dog on your staycation!

It takes a lot of trust from a rhino towards his human to be comfortable with something new, they are creatures of habit and don’t like change, so would be on edge if something big and spooky like a move crate just pops into the building and they’re expected to get in it.

Here we see Muzungu and Azeeza taking it in turns ro enter the area known as a “crush” (nowhere near as nasty as it sounds, it’s basically and short narrow corridor!). This area has been open to them since the move was confirmed, meaning they have had free access to wander in freely and become more confident and comfortable with it. You can see little Iniko having a go too, waiting for the day she is able to head off to make her mark in the breeding program.

When the big day is here, the move crate will be popped on the end, allowing them to wander straight on in!

❤️🦏

“ 229 rhinos poached so far in 2024 … but are we really seeing a the start of a dramatic decline in rhino poaching ? ”

News out of South Africa for the first 6 months of the years puts rhino poaching on the down.

The drop Linked with dehorning programmes with over 1,000 rhinos dehorned since April - May and June saw 21 and 22 rhinos poached compared to 42 and 34 in 2023.

For Those on the frontline in KwaZulu Natal the war rages on with 145 rhinos lost so far this year compared with 143 in 2023 and 133 in 2022.

Of those 229, 38 were killed on privately owned reserves ..

Bonamanzi reserve is a beautiful area of KwaZulu Natal teaming with wildlife - giraffe, rhino, leopard, nyala, hippo, bee eaters,
your visit and purchases in the zoo here in Cumbria help fund the Bonamanzi k9 ranger unit .. 3 rangers on the ground in the reserve protecting those very rhinos.

On my first trip to see firsthand the effect the anti poaching rangers have a wise and brave ranger told me our children in England are so lucky they will be able to see rhinos with horns our children will soon only see them in books.

These rangers are not unique, their efforts are mirrored with one goal in mind … let’s get that 229 down. Buy an August ticket which directly funds that protection

It’s been GRRREAT!

Guys, we have some news that we know will disappoint many – Sumatran Tigers Cinta and Kumbuh will be leaving Cumbria within the next 2 months. We don’t have an date set as yet, we anticipate it to be mid September and wanted to give you all as much notice as we could to say your goodbyes.

The Tiger Twins are almost 10 years old and have been in Dalton since they were just over a year, it is time for them to see the world (they have itchy paws!).

The Twins are headed overseas, they are off to an incredible facility sourced at our request by a an eminent zoo professional highly respected throughout National and international zoos, who has been working with us behind the scenes since 2017, which means you can rest assured they have a pawesome future ahead. Tigers in the wild can roam 32km in just one night – Cinta and Kumbuh are off to a facility offering much more space for them to enjoy and explore.

As always, it is up to the receiving institution to announce their arrival so we cannot let you know exactly where they are destined just yet, but we will bring you news of how they are settling in as soon as we can.

In the meantime, we have added a DAILY Tiger Talk & Feeding at 2:15pm, to give everyone the chance to bid farewell to Cinta and Kumbuh (this activity is Free of Charge). We also have availability on our Sumatran Tiger Encounter with Hand Feeding opportunity for multiple dates throughout August linked below.

2 years ago Anna, Kim and Sam set off on what would be a life changing visit to KwaZulu Natal. Met with amazing wildlife and harrowing events witnessing poaching and its indiscriminate slaughter first hand they came home with a" what can we do" determination. Fast forward to today the Bonamanzi K9 Ranger unit, funded by your visits to our zoo, despite the danger faced day in day out are committed to the protection of the planets big and small.

Today we salute our rangers, led by Junior, out there on the frontline, and all the amazing rangers willing to put their lives on the line day in day out to protect the heritage for us all.

Note the background of snares removed so far in 2024.

TTFN Big Fella! 🦏

This one hits us right in the feels….but it is for the best for the future of the White Rhino! 🦏

At the end of August, White Rhino Superdad Muzungu is leaving Cumbria! As his Superdad nickname suggests, Muzungu is father to TEN gorgeous chunky babies – by sheer number alone he is a MAJOR player………in the White Rhino Breeding programme.

Muzungu’s bloodlines are incredibly valuable, and with the limited space in our Africa facility we cannot consider further breeding, whilst he will be so so missed, it would be almost criminal for him to remain here at Safari Zoo, when he can add so much to the genetic pool 🧬 of captive White rhino 🦏– whose wild brothers and sisters face such an uncertain future. Therefore, Muzungu is off on his travels.

This is a move long in the making and we are especially grateful for the opportunity for collaboration with support of the EEP White Rhino Breeding Programme, London Zoo and Whipsnade who have made this move possible.

👋🏼 Ta-ta For Now Muzungu, Until we Meet Again Big Fella.

Muzungu will be joined on by Little Azeeza, who at 3 years old is ready to leave Mum and go off into the big wide world on her journey to start her own little family, just as she would in the wild. Azeeza should be being joined on this journey by her half sister, Iniko who is a month older than Azeeza and needs to be leaving Mum, just as she would in the wild. Sadly, despite the move being endorsed and encouraged by the Breeding Programme, and despite Iniko having a fabulous facility ready and willing to house her and let her start this essential journey, Iniko’s move has been blocked by our landlords whilst a ridiculous argument over “animal ownership” rages on and sadly impacts welfare and conservation.

Azeeza was born in February 2021, in the middle of lockdown. Her name meaning “Strong, Powerful and Dear” chosen to reflect hope and resilience as a light in the middle of a very dark tunnel, a name whose meaning seems to never falter to be relevant over the last 3 years.

Happy Travels Azeeza, you will be missed ever so much. ❤️

52 LIVES SAVED AT BONAMANZI 💪🏽🥾🦏

The Bonamanzi Rangers and APU have saved another 52 lives on one single mission. The APU this morning discovered a snare, on calling on the K9-Rangers for assistance the team removed 52 snares from one tiny area of the 4000 hectare (10 acre) reserve this morning.

Bonamanzi is home to Black and White Rhino, Giraffe, Elephant, Zebra, Wildebeest, Warthog and Buffalo aswell as many antelope species.

These brave rangers work tirelessly in a region which bore the brunt of rhino poaching in 2023, losing 325 of the 499 (65%) Rhinos killed in total across South Africa. On average, a rhino was poached within KZN every 27 hours. Earlier this month we reported Bonamanzi had lost a warthog and porcupine to poaching with spears.

It is a daily battle, but these guys never falter in their determination 💪🏽. Incredible reports from a front line protected by incredible people.
