🐴 FACT FRIDAY 🐴

Due to extensive selective breeding over the past few centuries, there are over 350 horse breeds in the world today.
According to a 2017 genetic study, all modern horses descend from two ancient horse breeds: the Arabian and Turkoman horses. While the Arabian horse still exists today, the Turkoman horse that is similar in appearance to the Akhal-Teke is now extinct.
All existing horse breeds fit into these five categories: hot-blood, warmblood, cold-blood/draft, pony, and miniature. Hot-blooded horses include the Arabian and Thoroughbred with origins in the Middle East. In contrast, cold-blooded (heavy) horses such as the Shire Horse and Clydesdale developed in northern Europe.

🐾 Fact Friday 🐾

A study last year (The effect of s*x and age on paw use within a large sample of dogs (Canis familiaris) by Laverack et al.) found that dogs have a dominant paw, like humans.

The main findings were:

1. A right paw preference was more common in both male and female dogs.
2. A right paw preference was significantly higher in females than in males.
3. Elderly dogs tended to have a higher right paw preference than younger dogs.

As many of you know, I have made the exciting move to Warwickshire to live with my boyfriend. I have kept on my wonderful client base in Oxfordshire and this will continue, however, I am now opening my books to new clients in Warwickshire.

To streamline appointments, I have also decided to go down the same route as vets and have zone days. This will allow me to open up more appointment slots and help me save fuel in these crazy times.

Please see my new zone days below:

Mondays - Banbury area
Tuesdays - Warwick / Leamington Spa area
Wednesdays - Bicester area
Thursdays - Chipping Norton area
Fridays - Witney / Carterton area

Any appointments that have to be made outside of one of these zone days may incur a travel charge. I understand everyones lives are busy, so please chat to me if you are worried about these changes and we can work something out. I have tried my best to make these days work for existing clients commitments.

Our little Poppy dog was 1️⃣6️⃣ last week and is still doing amazing for her age. Today the wonderful team at Woozelbears Hydrotherapy, Grooming and Spa threw her a little birthday party 🥳

🎀 Sweet 16 🎀

Today we celebrated one of our wonderful patients 16th birthday 🎉 lovely Poppy is owned by the marvellous Olivia at Three Shires Veterinary Physiotherapy 🐾

Poppy has thrived from regular treatment to maintain mobility and lifestyle💧at this age we'd expect to see deterioation which has been slowed down thanks to conservative management 🙌

Did you know that there are 18 muscles in a dog’s ear?
This allows them to raise, lower, rotate, tilt, and move them independently so they can hear better. Dogs also use their ears to express emotion. The posture and position of a dog’s ears at any given time tells the story of how they’re feeling, such as curious, happy or afraid. Their ears are also essential for balance. If your dog has ever had an ear infection, you may have noticed that they can get a bit wobbly as it affects their ear function.

I thought you might like to see what I have been up to recently!

I spent the most amazing time in South Africa celebrating a wonderful friend's (and fellow Vet Physio) wedding. We went on the most amazing safaris and saw some beautiful animals.
I have definitely fallen in love with this stunning country and I am already saving up my pennies to return in the future.

Would love to hear if you have any stories of Africa or Safaris 🐘🦒🦓🐆

Hello 👋

It’s been a while since I posted consistently on social media and I’ve had quite a lot of new followers so I felt introductions were needed.

My name is Olivia and I am the proud owner of Three Shires Veterinary Physiotherapy. I am fully qualified having completed a 4 year university degree to gain my qualification. This allows me to be a member of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP) and the Association of Animal Health Practitioners Register (AHPR).

I currently live in a little village in North Oxfordshire and I cover Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire. I am very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of this country and I adore travelling around to all your lovely animals.

I am lucky enough to have had horses my entire life and I currently share a lovely chestnut mare with my sister, I’m sure you will be seeing much more of her on my feed soon! Me and my boyfriend have an ex Working Bassett Hound who will be starting to make an appearance on here too, along with my family’s elderly terrier Poppy, who I know most of you love already!

I am obsessed with Tea (got to be strong Yorkshire tea though!) and I can’t resist anything with chocolate in it 🍫

I love getting to know my clients (horses, dogs and people), building that relationship and making great friends along the way. I absolutely love seeing the transformations that I am involved in.

I would love for you to say hello in the comments and let me know where you are following from 👋 🌏

Had a great time at the weekend supporting the Bicester and Oxford Riding Club at their Summer Dressage Show.

I sponsored the Prelim 7 Class and I loved watching all the competitors dance around the arena with a big smile on their face. It was such a relaxed and inviting show that was great for both first timers and seasoned professionals. They also had a very delicious food stall!

Emma Stringer won 1st place with her 5 year old, Echo. Congratulations to all the other prize winners, it was a pleasure!

I am looking forward to working with BORC more and hopefully doing a little bit of competing myself in the near future.

Did you know that a dog's sense of smell is 40 times better than humans?

Dog's noses possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors compared to humans who have about 6 million.

A dog's sense of smell is powerful enough to detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion. This is the equivalent to a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic sized swimming pools!

Dogs also have something called neophobia, which means they are attracted to new and interesting odours.

With training, some dogs can sniff out bombs and drugs, pursue suspects and find dead bodies. They're also trialing dogs being able to detect human disease, such as cancer, diabetes and COVID-19.

🐴 Meet the Patient Mondays 🐴

Meet Bridie - a lovely older girl with plenty of life left in her!

Bridie is a 23 year old ISH x TB who now enjoys a quieter life hacking a few times a week but in her prime she enjoyed Eventing.

I first met Bridie after she had got loose whilst coming in from her field. It was a wet day and she was having rather a lot of fun galloping around but unfortunately she slipped and ended up aggravating her Arthritis.

Bridie had a few intensive Physiotherapy sessions to help alleviate the pain and improve mobility. She improved very well and is now on maintenance sessions every 3 months.
