One important factor in your dog's recall is your bond with your dog and how interesting you are compared to the environment (a battle that a lot of us unfortunately lose).

I like to use this Sheepskin Chaser Tug to practice engaging in tug-of-war in a quiet environment, especially with the youngsters, making sure they win occassionally. In time, this will make coming back to me more interesting as the dogs will know they will get a good game of tug as a reward.

✨Finding it difficult to keep your dog entertained while on a walk?
✨Noticing your dog's recall deteriorating?
✨Feel like your dog needs more mental stimulation than physical sometimes ?

If you're thinking 'yes, these all sound familiar' then why not engage your dog in a little hide and go seek while out⁉️

We've used a dummy here to perform this blind retrieve but i'd also highly recommend using a 'Pocket Magnet' from Tug-e-nuff... designed to keep your dog's attention, I've found it really good to use on a blind retrieve also! Once they bring it back to you you can reward them with a friendly game of tug to reinforce the behaviour.

Don't forget, the more interesting you are compared to your environment, the better your dog's recall and therefore safety. Recall isn't always easy to train and keep consistent in dogs but it is worth putting in that extra effort to ensure your dog is safe and sound.

Picked up some new training aids today from the wonderful who have a new pet shop since last time I was there a decade ago! It's a fab den of all things dog!

This is how you want your spaniel to look at you... Always! You want to know that theyre engaging with you and looking for your next command.

Obviously with some dogs direct eye contact can be interpreted as a challenge and increase their arousal level so adjust according to your dog and what you want from them.

Spaniels love looking longingly into their owners eyes so encourage it in low stimulation environments to start and introducing it into increasingly more stimulating environments. If nothing else better control keeps your dog safe 😊

Billy representing yesterday!

I absolutely love these, they're easier to clip on to the collar, didn't move at all despite all the spanieling he did, fully waterproof so didn't mind going for a dip and gives live tracking of Billy's walk that his owner .power.1 could follow while we were out knowing he was having a good time and safe throughout!

Could a dog beat a cheetah??

Simple answer, yes! Greyhounds are incredible long distance runners and can run at 35mph for nearly 7 miles!

A cheetah, though incredibly fast, could only keep its top speed up for around 200 -300 yards, so in a race they would soon be overtaken by the Greyhound!

TOP TIP TUESDAY 🐾🐕♥

Easter Sunday is just around the corner!

Please don't leave chocolate lying around for your dog to sniff out! We all know how good their sense of smell is and if it's accessible they'll find it!

Theobromine is a compound found in chocolate and is poisonous to dogs. The higher the cocoa percentage the more potent this is. The lower your dog's body weight the less they have to ingest before toxicity.

If your dog does ingest chocolate please contact your vet immediately to discuss the best course of action.

☀ It's turning into a bit of a warm one today! Don't get caught out! ☀

☀ we all think about keeping our dogs cool in the summer but this is the time of year where more heat stroke cases are presented to vets as we don't expect the higher temperatures! ☀

☀ TOP TIPS ☀
🔹 Walk your dog before 10am and after 4pm to avoid midday heat
🔹 Walk in shaded areas which have access to safe, flowing water especially if your dog's a bit of a fish
🔹 Provide access to shade and fresh drinking water at all times
🔹 Leave your dog at home unless absolutely necessary to take them with you

🔹 If your dog does get too warm ✅ DO cool them down slowly by sponging them down with tepid water
✅ DO provide a wet towel to lie or stand on
✅ DO apply tepid water to their armpits, groin and feet
✅ DO contact your vet for further advice
✅ DO take their temperature and monitor for temperatures near and over 41 degrees as this is a critical threshold for mortality and must be reported to your vet
🔹 If your dog does get too warm ✖ DON'T cover them in a wet towel as this will reduce their heat loss effectiveness
✖ DON'T blast them will cold AC or cold water otherwise they will start to self reheat
✖ DON'T encourage them to eat

A dog will sniff arousal odors from other dogs and novel odors with their right nostril and familiar odors, non-aversive scents and smells from other animals with their left nostril!

TOP TIP TUESDAY 🐾🐕♥

With summer just around the corner we are dreaming of long, hot days, ice cream on the beach, holidays and beat the heat dog walks. But now is the time of year where we get unseasonal spikes in the temperature and as a consequence the number of heat stroke cases in dogs is due to be at its highest.

Please consider this at all times, leave the dog at home if you don't have to bring them, always provide fresh drinking water and consider your walk times.

If you aren't confident about what to do if you think your dog has heat stroke, read up about the steps to take. You might be surprised to learn that the best way to cool your dog down is gradually with tepid water to prevent their brain trying to heat them back up again.
