Here are just a few photos of the horses I’ve cared for this year 🥰

🥕 QUICK CARROT FACT 🥕

It's carrot time of year again!

Carrots are a useful succulent for horses on winter mostly-dry diets e.g. hay and bucket feed, with limited grass intake.

Carrots are LOW IN SUGAR on a fresh basis at around 5%. Compare this to a typical sugar content of hay of 8%:

🥕 1 medium carrot (60g) = 3g sugar
🟨 1 small bale slice of typical meadow hay (1kg) = 81g sugar

Owners often consider carrots to be high in sugar but that's on a dry matter basis i.e. if you dry the carrot. Most of a fresh carrot is water - around 80% - and this means its sugar content is diluted.

Some vets recommend not to feed carrots to overweight, laminitic or EMS horses or ponies, but this is due to the risk of the owner over-feeding carrots (the risk of 1 becomes, 2, becomes 3, becomes half a bucketful) NOT the sugar content of a single carrot.

Please share to help me spread the truth about feeding carrots! 🥕🐴🍏

Huge congratulations to Rose & Faro this weekend Defender Blair Castle International Horse Trials. You guys are an incredible team and you should be super proud of yourselves 🐎🎉🥰

Blair 2023 Scottish Championship BE90 ... When the smile says it all 🥹

We arrived on Friday evening, and whilst the dream team were checking in and getting his stable ready, I took Faro for a ride round the grounds and up the hill to chill (both him and me!).

Saturday morning we were up for an early dressage time. He rode a nice enough test, but I was frustrated as really felt it wasn't our best at all. When I found out we got 32, I was pleasantly surprised!
We were sat 14th after dressage, with only a few marks between the whole section so a lot could still change 🤞

Sunday morning we head out on the course, and I was nervous (we'd just seen someone fall off at no.4!). The ground was far from ideal - definitely the worst ground Faro has ran on, so wasn't sure how he'd take it, plus a beefy track too. But he fired out the start box and was so up for it! Flew over every question with no second looks, until the final fence! He hesitated, and dragon snorted round the corner costing us 2 secs time penalties, but clear meaning we climbed up to 5th going into the SJ 😬

Scores were still very tight, so 1 pole would be costly. It was a busy arena with a lot of distractions (and things to spook at 🙈), a few of which caught Faro's eye, but he kept his toes tucked for a clear round. I couldn't believe it!

Final results, we had wiggled our way up to SECOND PLACE finishing on 32.8 , meaning we qualified for BADMINTON for a second time !!
So proud of this horse. He's gone beyond any of our expectations - has certainly earned his holiday now 🧡

HUGE thank you as always to superstar dream team and , for sacrificing your wkend to plough through mud but most importantly thank you for tolerating me at my worst 😆🙈

Big thank you to and for your support ❤️
And for all of the side line cheerleaders too !!
... countdown to 2024 now on 🙌

‘I just bathed him last week!’

Did ye, aye? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I always ask my clients to bath their horse the day before clipping (this is to allow for adequate drying time).
Most of my clients are booked in around 2-4 weeks in advance, so that’s plenty of time to organise bathing your horse!

But really, why should your horse be as clean as possible for clipping? 🤨

• To prevent dirt, grease, mud, grit etc blunting blades super quickly, causing them to snag and pull on your horse’s hair.

• To look after the clipper motors - dirty hair and blunt blade will put excess strain on the motor, which will cause damage, and an expensive repair bill.

• To make is as comfortable an experience as possible for the horse - hair snagging HURTS.

• To get the smoothest, most flawless, perfect clip possible.
Dirt = lines and patches.
Clippers are perfectionists, it upsets us to leave you with a sub-standard clip.

• To avoid a ‘dirty horse’ surcharge from your professional clipper, or a repair bill for damaged equipment.

We hate clipping the horse like this, we hate what it does to our equipment, we hate charging more money.

Bath your horse.

⚠️Laminitis risk continues⚠️
☀️🌧The weather is keeping us all on our toes, from baking sunshine to torrential rain… and together that will make the grass grow.

✅Do check digital pulses daily
✅Do watch your horse's weight – take photographs to help monitor any change in weight
❎Don’t try to cut their food intake by leaving the, without food for long periods of time as they may colic
✅Do restrict their grazing/use a grazing muzzle
❎Don’t feed foods rich in carbs or rapidly fermentable fibre
✅Do increase their exercise if possible
✅Do soak your hay for 12 hours to reduce the nutrients/goodness in it
✅Do know the early warning signs of laminitis
✅Do ask for professional advice

We are here to help, so if you have any concerns or questions about your horse please get in touch on 01577 841010.

🪱Keeping on top of parasite control is important at all times of the year. Our handy year planner helps you to understand what you should be doing with your horses.

💩As well as regular worm egg counts, and only worming when necessary, regular poo picking is also really important.

Poo picking your field is perhaps not the nicest of chores, but certainly an important aspect. Turning a blind eye to this job could lead you and your horse into difficulty.

A few good reasons as to why Poo Picking should be a regular task;

🌾 Kills Vegetation
🪰 Reduces those pesky Flies
👀 Let’s you observe the conditions of the field
🪱 Reduced risk of your horse obtaining worms
🤩 Makes your fields look clean and respectable

Why don’t you drop another good reason of your own in the comments below 👇

Happy Poo Picking 💩💪🏼
