⭐⭐ Forthcoming Changes to the UK Highway Code ⭐⭐

🐴 Those of us who regularly ride our horses on the roads in the UK will doubtless be familiar with advice presented in the Highway Code, which guides how road users are to behave. Following a lengthy public consultation process, the Government is shortly to make significant changes to the Highway Code that fundamentally affect the status of many road users, including horse riders, and of how they are to be treated in the eyes of the law.

🐴 For the first time the Highway Code will establish a specific ‘hierarchy of road users’ with an order of priority given as: pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, cars, vans, large passenger vehicles and then heavy good vehicles. The aim being to ensure that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they might pose to others.

🐴 Specific changes affecting horse riders include establishing guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking horse riders. Specifically; when overtaking a horse rider (or horse drawn vehicle) you must give at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car. As a driver, you must also take extra care and give more space when overtaking horse riders or horse drawn vehicles in bad weather (including high winds) and at night.

🐴 Guidance when overtaking horse riders and horse drawn vehicles includes: leaving a minimum distance of 2 metres; passing at speeds under 15mph; and further, that one should wait behind a horse rider or horse drawn vehicle if it is not safe to overtake and not possible to meet the above guidance. Do not push through or past a horse; horses are sentient beings who can be unpredictable.

🐴 The Government website (https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review-of-the-highway-code-to-improve-road-safety-for-cyclists-pedestrians-and-horse-riders) has a great deal more information on the changes, which make interesting reading and will hopefully make our roads safer for all.

and enjoying themselves in the sunshine last week 😍 a bit too much in Flynn’s case as he was proving bold enough to take some strides out and powering round, knowing what was coming 😂 we’ll be trialing different bits I think! But I’m so happy he’s taking to this jumping after only a handful of jumps under saddle 🦕
Jups is back to his more confident self again now that we’re jumping a bit more and back on his supplements 🖤 need to start planning some trips out again! 💪🏼

Mixed emotions with today’s jump lesson 🙄
was jumping phenomenally! He found the grid so easy and he definitely had his brave pants on that’s for sure! I just love it when he locks on to a fence - and we don’t have a battle with the spooks 🖤
What a superstar little was today! His first grid! Had a fair few excitable strong baby moments but he definitely picked it up quickly 🤩 now that he’s 5 I can start jumping a bit more on him - and he sure seems happy with that!🦕
And then there’s 😂 he started off amazing, jumping brilliantly- scope to burn! - landing a bit iffy as we were running out of arena with the speed and scope we were ending on, but it was manageable…then it’s like someone flipped a switch and he completely blew his own mind 🙄 managed to get some semblance of control back by the end but he was not a happy bunny! Unfortunately (or fortunately with this weather🌧) Zeus is on box rest for the next few days after over reaching something fierce and cutting his heel 🥲 thankfully he’s not lame, but it’s currently bandaged and he’s swapped stables for the next few days - hoping for a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹
